~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~LYRICS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A man came across this old tower one day
It was straight like from a book he once read
He lifted his head up and saw this young lady
And here's what the lady said:
"Moi je m'appelle mademoiselle
Noir Et comme vous pouvez le voir
Je ne souris, ni ris, ni vis."
Et c'est tout ce qu'elle a dit
The man was so scared he could only run away
He ran to the town and then said:
"I just saw a lady with the longest dark hair
And I think she's a living dead!"
The people, so scared, took their guns and their swords
They ran to the tower and then
They saw the pale lady and felt a great fear
When they heard how she said it again:
"Moi je m'appelle mademoiselle Noir
Et comme vous pouvez le voir
Je ne souris, ni ris, ni vis."
Et c'est tout ce qu'elle a dit
The people, they knew what this all was about:
She was clearly a demon from hell
They decided to set her long hair on fire
In the end it would burn her as well
But the lady was no demon she was a lonely soul
Just like in that book they once read
Still waiting for her prince while her hair was on fire
The one last time she said:
"Moi je m'appelle mademoiselle
Noir Et comme vous pouvez le voir
Je ne souris, ni ris, ni vis."
Et c'est tout ce qu'elle a dit
I think this song is about a story that took place during the times when they burned witches and anything that they did not understand, and the story of Rapunzel was during this time, and they only saw it as a fairy tale and thought it was nice, but then when they really came across a Rapunzel in real life, they killed her and saw her as a monster. And yet in the fairy tale, they thought it was a sweet innocent. It also chould be, that the fact they killed her, its because not only did she have long black hair, but they did not understand what she was saying, there for she was evil. the reason the lyrics at the end say "and thats all she said" is because her words were not at all malicious, and she was innocent. And they killed her, all because they did not understand what she was saying, and how she looked.
I know, that's one of the saddest and darkest times in history, society ( not all) hate different stuff and I know its so illogical and stupid, why do they immediately judge when they don't even know or studied that thing
Humans neglect what they dont understand and kill the ones who look or act differently. (Not all but you get it)
Great theory! I like to believe they burned her because she was speaking French. Now don't get the wrong idea, I personally don't despise french people, but knowing France's history and its various conquests, to their enemies, such as England, Burgundy or Brittany, a lady speaking French could be a sign that she believes that these lands should be under french occupation. This would make her a Rebel, and considering on what level Women's rights were back then (non-existent), they would assume she was crazy, or, to keep the fantasy spirit, even a witch, all of which were a good enough reason to burn her.
Should clarify that the ones you are claiming do this are the minority, you almost make it sound as if humanity is innately evil, which is not the case, nor is it the case for good either.
@Supreme King Mademoiselle Noir is about a young woman who resembled Rapunzel, which the English only knew to be fiction, however, when they'd encountered this Mademoiselle Noir, not only did she have raven locks - The Rapunzel they knew had beautiful *golden* locks - but she also spoke french, which frightened the English as they only knew the existence of their language. They believed that Mademoiselle was a demon because she could not communicate to the others in their language and so the English decided they'd set her hair on fire, knowing that it would reach her body soon enough and burn her alive.
I really feel like this song has a deeper meaning. Like how it's trying to convey how we often ostracize people simply because we do not know the bigger picture and never truly tried to understand their point of view before we make a judgement. Great workof art
Indeed, I felt it too. The townfolk in the song was clearly scared of her because she was different from them, and they assoicated her with a symbol of evil because of that. They didn't want to dig further for details, they acted on their impulse and killed her.
This shows an underlying "insecurity" (if I may call it like that) of the collective as a whole, and this insecurity can be seen in real life as well, through time and even today.
Just look at how bad many of us react when confronted with a point of view, concept, etc. that we do not understand, or that we fear. We try to avoid it, or act in a defensive, unnecessarily emotional or even violent way, and this can hurt poeple around us, and ourselves as well.
It also tells us a lot about ourselves, about our way of thinking and about how much of our life is governed by our fears. This is an issue that did not die out, despite the time that has passed until now.
From this perspective, I think this song's lyrics are relevat for our society today.
I First heard it at hitrecord.
While the comments about the people not understanding French are funny, I think they did understand her. The man misunderstood her saying “I don’t smile or laugh or live.” as her literally being dead, rather than not living in a quality of life sense. This is why he thinks he saw “a living dead.” She said she wasn’t living because she hadn’t found her prince and didn’t really feel alive, not that she was an actual corpse.
That makes sense.
Makes sense.
In both cases it's still about the town rejecting the woman because she was different.
That goes straight to the heart with all its beauty and sadness. Why would people be like that and could not stand someone who is different ...
I didn't knew the song before, but now it is one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing!
I think it's not entirely because she was different, but because these differences made people think of something they perceive as evil. Her dark, long hair and gloomy attitude was assoicated in their mind with the image of the evil, which they feared, so the only sollution they saw was eliminating her.
@@a.t.1241 Hi, thank you for answering this old comment. Yes, you're right. But I also think, all those people couldn't stand a person who's different to their "normal" attitudes, different also with her hair, eyes, behaviour. Different means evil for them.
@@sincitymafia7809 Oky man. You're right! Whatever you perceive is not obvious to others, I get it. I'm sorry, happy. Good day to you
I mean yeah it was wrong but I get why they burned her. Assuming that this is set in I don’t know the 17th, 18th century (back when guns and swords were both widely used in combat) people didn’t get out that much, imagine this. You grew up in this small town in let’s say Germany you had never left this town your whole world is this little hamlet in Germany. Then you’re exploring some old tower one day and some chick with long black hair comes out from nowhere and starts talking in some strange indecipherable language, you wouldn’t think “oh she’s just foreign and doesn’t speak the language she’s probably just asking for directions”, no you’d think “dear god it’s a demon or a sorceress or some other kind of vile evil creature trying to curse me, or some other nasty thing” and you would be scared out of your mind and run away because you would be having issues discerning French from Latin (demons are described as speaking in Latin and many hexes and curses are in Latin) and you run back to your village to tell them about the scary lady you saw and how she hexed you or something, this being 200 - 300 years ago people were rather superstitious. So they arm themselves and march up to see what you’re talking about and she starts talking to them in this strange language saying the exact thing she said to you, so they say “dear god it’s a demon we must destroy it” so they burn her alive thinking that she was some form of evil incarnate. They weren’t evil or something like that just 17th century village folk
But that's exactly the saddest part about this song: This stuff really happened in those days, and even today. We fear the things we don't know about, and we seek to get rid of them. Without ever understanding the full situation. It's just human nature, trying to protect ourselves from what might be malicious.
Mademiselle Noir is a true tragedy.
Jesus
I completely agree except for one detail... it original song is entirely in french. So in other words they would both speak french. to be fair it probably didn't help that she said that she is neither living nor dead.
but what you said makes sense for this version of the song. Sorry if i rambled.
@@ellxsandranoratora makes sense
@The one girl Depends but when the Netherland people fist came to my land we accept them and give them gift and traided with them and in return they colonised us for more than 300 years
Okay but she's saying "me, my name is Miss Black, I cannot smile or laugh or live. And that's all she said"
The people understood what she was saying, they were scared because it sounded as though she was a demon and not that she does not feel like she is living because she is stuck up in her tower waiting for her prince every day.
The lyrics say they were scared as she said it again, hence meaning they did know French, plus I'm pretty sure they were from a French town
My heart is full of darkness and sadness that no birds want to fly by it, no songs can be played in it, nobody wants to step in. The thorns I have that hurt myself often look like a weapon I intentionally keep to attack others and make people to believe I'm their enemy. The blood that came out of my own body makes it look like I hurt others and got covered with their blood. I might be broken, but I'm not evil. But people are still scared of me.
