I took 10.000 IU Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate) in 2018, between the months July and November. Bone pain started in October and around that time my vision became weird too. I began to close objects double. I quit Vitamin A in November. The pain was gone after a couple of days, the vision issue resolved after 1 or 2 days. I had also tried liquid Vitamin A prior to that but it didn't have any side effects like that. That's why I bought the pills in the first place. Thinking it will be just as safe.
From what I've found about most or all brands of cod liver oil is they have synthetic vitamin A added back to replace the naturally occurring vitamin A that gets destroyed during the "minimal processing" pasteurization process for bottling even the best brands of cod liver oil. Seems there's no escaping inaccuracy/disingenuous labeling.
I still wonder what amounts are considered as "excessive". We do know that most of the stated requierements are too low. So, from where is it getting too much? :/ Another factor is how much you can actually use and when you have not a perfect digestion.
It seems a fine balance, however I'm seeing an emerging picture that will leave me in far better shape than before. I have no health problems apart for being a little overweight. Dropping the sugar and other stuff containing high fructose corn syrup as well as stopping refined carbs and having coconut oil were all changes that alone are massively beneficial. I've also searched out what vegetables are better to eat and now I do them. I ain't fussing over grass fed this or that or other tedium. I don't think I really need to :)
I take notes. Pages and pages of notes. It sits on my table. When I sit down to take my supplements or eat my balanced foods, I feel like a mad scientist. :-) I took a few tests recently. I realized how much stress and heavy metals has depleted me in a bunch of stuff. I have been learning a lot. I almost feel like ignorance is bliss right now. And go out and get a double cheeseburger with onion rings, waffle fries, and cupcakes. Hmmm..... No, I won't do that. It took me too long to backtrack after my last eating incident.
*Synthetic* is the key vocabulary here. Synthetic vitamins are bad in the long term, while organic (plant based) vitamins are much better since they are closer to the vitamins from food
I see people taking like 7 supplements daily when they have a varied, healthy diet (fitness influencers) unless you have a deficiency that your doctor told you about or a disease that doesn’t allow your body to absorb nutrients properly, then you don’t need to supplement :/
@@Churbitser No it won't. Because food in industrial world for the most part is lacking nutriens due to soil depletion and environmental pollution. I love that you're pointing exactly all that out which I wish I knew before my endocrine crash. It's amazing and much needed info for people willing to improve their health. Can potassium supplements cause kidney and liver damage? One keto TH-camr is saying that's why potassium comes in only 99mg pills. Please doc review this comment.
Potassium supplementation is dangerous and can cause you to die if taken without the help of your medical practitioner. You can only get low dose OTC because of these safety concerns.
missing1person. Too much potassium can induce cardiac failure! Take potassium supplements ONLY under the advice of your Doctor!! If your potassium is low, then increase intake of potassium rich foods - lower intakes of ALL 'sugars'. Ensure a good supply of Magnesium from food as this helps potassium absorption.
The amount of potassium required was reduced this year. About 3400 mg for me. There is no upper limit but those with KNOWN kidney issues are at risk fromover supplementation. Please look at some real research about potassium; it is a vital nutrient and probably undersupllemented because of fear mongering.
@@dana102083 Not really. The low dosages on all supplements are just so you buy more because you are constantly running out of them. Ie VitD3 in my country is sold max in 1000 IU ... Since I take 10 000 OK per day with 200mcg of K2 I need to swallow a lot of those capsules. Anybody can overdose as they please ...just a matter of how many pills you take . All those sold OCT are HUGELY under the needed amounts. So buying and following the RDV is a waste of money !!!...not to mention that it doesn't help you either !!!
@@danaricci5044 I suggest eating food over supplements so the food makes you stop eating when you get enough nutrients... Companies dont want to be sued so they put little in too..but yes everything is about money. But potassium is lethal when theres too little or too much-- thats definitely a reason why its in very small bottles. Sure you can buy more but its more effort and will be less accidental but by intent. That risk is the same for all pills accessible.. As a nurse, they changed how nurses could handle potassium to be very restricted to reduce the chance of death by accidental overdose and lowered quantities, changed packaging.. Same things. Just another check and balance. 10000 OK? I only know IUs.. Ive never seen it higher as higher doses technically arent recommended therefore not needed... But alas the recommendations are incorrect as Ive mentioned..
Hi, we know that liver is very high in nutrients, how much of grassfed beef liver should we eat per week? and what about pregnant women? should they avoid eating liver??
What?? I was always told that if we take like a multivitamin or something, whatever our body doesn’t need will be pee’d or something. Meaning, our body will only let us absorb what we need... Can we trust a multivitamin? I guess someone like me wouldn’t know how much I can safely have. Hopefully I can trust my physician. This really scared me, not so much for myself, but for my dad. Please let me know!
Only water soluable vitamins are peed out in excess. Fat soluable vitamins like some of those on his list, are stored in fat and are available to us when fasting but may have harmful effects. I think what is proposed as dietary standards may meed to look at different values when people are in ketosis. I thi k this is partially to do with the fact that every carb has a toxin so it is repelling pests from eating it. When we reduce grains, we reduce lectins. Some veggies are reduced or elliminated and leaky gut improves and improved absorption of the nutrients occurs.. But on a high carb diet, poor absorption takes place often.. So I think the whole thing needs to be re-examined. As for trusting sources of vitamins? Not many have the proper vitamins needed..ie folate vs folic acid.. Some have worse fillers and dyes. Some people are poor methylaters from the mthfr gene and need methylated vitamins..its pretty common actually. So youd want to do your research and look at the testing. I take otc ones knowing im not getting best sources, on a tight budget but i focus on eating as many nutrient dense foods as i can.

Dr. Berg, FYI, Hemochromatosis is not genetic, although it can be for some people. My own mother "came down with" hemochromatosis late in life although she'd never had it before. She suffered through several years of phlebotomies despite testing negative for it genetically. She certainly had all the symptoms. And then just as suddenly as it had started, it stopped. We never knew why either happened.

I am so tired of hurting and being tired and not knowing why. I follow the rules and yet still have problems. Is it my water, or not enough water? Are the supplements I am taking, too much, or too little? I am dedicated to taking care of my health yet am confused by so much information. I live by the "moderation" rule, but how do I know if I am staying in the middle or doing too much or too little?
One other thing - too much Vitamin A can cause dizziness / vertigo, and ceasing the Vit A supplementation can stop it. This happened to both myself and a friend. We're both older people.
I understand all the info, but knowing exactly whether your too low or too high is the tricky part. When you got similar problems either way, you could think its one, but could be another. Even the thought that weakness might be linked to too much here, could be too little vit on something else. Even k2 i was understood to be vital for vit d and that in cheese. But u got to avoid cheese to help vit d do most benefit. So now i better not get k2 from cheese. Damn, my brains gonna explode. 🤣🤣🤣
with vitamin A, how much beta carotene is actually converted to retinol? cause i eat a lot of sweet potatoes, enough where technically i'm getting more than the upper limit of the dietary recommendation for retinol activity equivalent. i also eat a lot of broccoli, enough to technically be way over the upper limit of the dietary recommendation for vitamin k.

Dr. Berg in addition to getting our minerals and nutrients from nature more than from synthetics, does the variety of ways (types of exercise, other physical things) in which we can use the body also work to counteract imbalances that can occur from taking synthetics or having some nutrient imbalance for whatever reason? Kat Bunn NuSI was funded by Keto supporter Garry Taube, he raised 40 millions dollars and he hired independent scientists (Kevin Hall) to study the effects of Keto diets and the results were not what they hoped. They found weight loss from Keto wasn’t fat loss but protein, water and muscles. NuSI final report states that Keto diets fail experimental interrogation. I’m wondering how Dr Berg’s diet differs? I’m not trolling or trying to challenge Dr Berg’s theories, I’m just inquiring how his approach is different.
Hi, I had a question. My diet contains quite some antioxidants, and I also take some supplements. Among these supplements I don't take most-known antioxidants (i.e. vit A, E, C) but I take a pine bark extract and NAC, which are considered antioxidants. Are they safe or are they similar to vit A, E and C? Could you tell me the dosage otherwise, to be safe from any side effects?
There is a whole range of subclinical symptoms that he completely leaves out of the discussion. They are headaches, nausea, cramping, blurred vision, etc. Only time, and yes experimentation, can lead you to optimal dosage. Oh, and your needs will change depending on stress, exercise, age, and whatever else you eat, as he does say. Stay well.
Historically, there are two instances of excess that come to mind. First with Vitamin A, there was the instance of polar explorers who ate a million units of vitamin A in polar bear liver with obvious results. The second vitamin A overdose was an Adele Davis reader who repeatedly took 200,000 iu and sued her, settling out of court. I prefer beta carotene over cod liver oil.
I had gastric bypass nine months ago (started keto on month 2 and I am also doing IF for about a month now). I take a lot of medications/pills. Wonder if I am taking too much: Magnesium Glycinate, Cherry Extract, Turmeric, Calcium Citrate, Potassium, Apple Cider Vinegar Capsules, Super Enzymes (with Bromelain, Ox Bile, Pancreatin and Papain), fish oil, k2, and a very strong multivitamin from Unjury. (Not to mention Oxybutynin and Colchicine. And I am about to start creatine, lion's mane, and Ginkgo).

I ain't fussing over grass fed this or that or other tedium. I don't think I really need to :)
I take notes.
Pages and pages of notes.
It sits on my table.
When I sit down to take my supplements or eat my balanced foods, I feel like a mad scientist.

I took a few tests recently.
I realized how much stress and heavy metals has depleted me in a bunch of stuff.

*Synthetic* is the key vocabulary here. Synthetic vitamins are bad in the long term, while organic (plant based) vitamins are much better since they are closer to the vitamins from food
Thank you Dr Berg, for bringing awareness to such a vital subject, lifesaving information we really need

We need a video about absorption rates as RDA is not the absorption rate.

I see people taking like 7 supplements daily when they have a varied, healthy diet (fitness influencers) unless you have a deficiency that your doctor told you about or a disease that doesn’t allow your body to absorb nutrients properly, then you don’t need to supplement :/
Yikes! Now, I am afraid to take vitamin supplements.
That's good! Get all the nutrients you need by eating healthy! That'll put the supplement industry out of business!
Get an HTMA (hair analysis) to see which ones you need.
N. Howell how does work? Where can I find it ?
@@Churbitser
No it won't.
Because food in industrial world for the most part is lacking nutriens due to soil depletion and environmental pollution.
Supplementation is a lesser evil but has to come through legitimate and proper channels.
I Believe the health stores are a good source of specific supplements but you need to do a diligent research not to fall for " false prophets" so to speak as many are simply frauds !

And do you think that eating like 2/3 meals with no/low carb just and carbs only at evening(low cortisol) would be good enough? We'd probably never hit steady ketosis like this but still, is it healthy enough?
What about big amounts of synthetic Vitamin B complex ??? Can you please include these??

@@dana102083
Not really.
But alas the recommendations are incorrect as Ive mentioned..
the complexities here defy understanding
Eat good food and the body will regulate itself --- "You are what you eat."
Everyone has their own definition of what “good food” is
On second thought, I think Dr Berg is more like Engineering Explained.
I take otc ones knowing im not getting best sources, on a tight budget but i focus on eating as many nutrient dense foods as i can.
dana102083 wow thank you for such a thorough reply!!
Make sure ur vitamins r NOT synthetic--also, liquid is better absorbed, then powdered, then gel caps--hard pills generally do not break down well!!

WOW! Very good info! Never seen a video on this before. Thanks!
Dr. Berg, Sie sind Lebensretter, mit freundlichen Grüßen aus Deutschland!!
Seems a good balanced diet is the answer
Dr Berg. Thanks for your excellent videos. One question...how much is too much?
Any amount taken from natural sources is good because nature has always balanced amount but taken from synthetic sources it is really dangerous.
I read inflammation in your body can cause it.
So perhaps after her inflammation went away so did her high levels
You should've added how much we need of each daily so we know not to go over the limit.
Could you pls do a video on RDA on vitamins and thanks for this information.
thanks, that was very informative. quick question - so how often (what frequency?) do you recommend someone supplement with synthetic (multi) vitamins and antioxidants on the side while following a proper healthy and wholesome diet along with a very active training lifestyle? thanks again!
I've bought all of drberg supplements to take. How to know if I'm over doing it rn 🤔
How do you know if a vitamin is synthetic? Does it say on the bottle?
Are all the vitamins we take synthetic?
H K If isn’t a food sourced vitamin, it’s otherwise synthetic.

I’m so glad u said zinc deficiency causes alopecia 💕 Plz doctor .. what foods r high in zinc plz... my son has alopecia 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Oysters have the highest levels of zinc as well as beef and poultry. Just google it. He may have a problem absorbing it as well cause zinc is in a lot of foods. Try intermittent fasting combined with keto to try and correct the problem
🙏🏽😌 thank u
Pepitas are high in Zinc
Low in copper or unbind copper also can lead into infections, iron issue since copper regulate iron
yes iron causes a lot of issue from cancer to brain damages, etc
and yes blood donation is an excellent way to get rid off iron.
and food base is the best source, since there are so many supporting cast we human yet to realize and have names for them.
Yes, I overdid the vitamin d supplements before and got heel spurs, making my achilles area very sore especially when walking.

Can you please talk about what can we do after overdose of zinc or such supplements?
Thanks Dr Berg for discussing this very important information👌🙋🏻♀️🌷🌿💕

Dr Berg, why did the Nutritional Science Initiative prove Keto diets were bogus? How is your approach different?
Maybe Nutritional Science Initative is bogus--these health benefits have been used for centuries!!
Can any of these vitamins cause breathing difficulties and if so at what level? Asthma sufferer.
Stay well.
💯
Historically, there are two instances of excess that come to mind. First with Vitamin A, there was the instance of polar explorers who ate a million units of vitamin A in polar bear liver with obvious results. The second vitamin A overdose was an Adele Davis reader who repeatedly took 200,000 iu and sued her, settling out of court. I prefer beta carotene over cod liver oil.
What we need is a complex medical term for people who consume too much sugar and salt, idio-hyper-calorie-mia comes to mind.
