I love watching these episodes of "Rhoda" you've posted. Thanks so much! It was one of my favorite sitcoms from the 70s. As I've watched, I've grown to be more ambivalent about the character of Ida even though Nancy Walker plays her wonderfully to great comic effect. It's dawned on me that she's somewhat narcissistic and, for me, very hard to take (thanks goodness she's fictional). I had a father who was a raging narcissist. Ida's bush league compared to him, but she definitely displays many of the identifying behaviors. She's so self-involved, pushy and abrasive, and completely dismissive of the feelings and opinions of others. Very funny in spite of that.

I could've left a opened personal letter on the coffee table and Mom wouldn't have read it. She was always there and a good source of comfort and advice, but never intrusive and critical. I have to admit that I liked seeing Ida's softer side in "The Separation" episode when she whacked Joe with her purse. I also liked her comment about not being able to believe a man who would leave her daughter.
Ida's horrible but probably a little different from your bad experience, she does recognize others' feelings enough to be hurt by them, she devalues what they want for themselves because only her opinion matters. She has no boundaries at all, it never occurred to her that the divorce decree was not hers to destroy. While still being an unbearable parent, she is much more vulnerable then your typical narcissist. I think the writers realized that if she were not, the show would be unwatchable.

Thin or heavy, Valerie Harper is beautiful; she seems to be wearing less eye make-up here, much more natural, no false lashes. There are some hairstyles that have suited her better than others, but with those cheekbones and her features, there's no denying her beauty.
Agree, the perm next season was not a good look for her. Perms were all the rage then...Barbara in A Star Is Born. For years my mom gave me a perm every 3 months, Rave body wave, set on small and medium rollers...loved it.

If you watch her in season 3, you can see that her hips and thighs were heftier, similiar to how she looked in season 1 of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She looked great with a few extra pounds, actually, but it was quite a change from the end of season 3 to the beginning of season 4.
I like Brenda's hair in this ep. Makes her face look thinner, too. I liked it when Rhoda had that short braid hanging at the back of her head, while the rest of her hair hung loose and free. Some of these eps she had that style. Brenda and Ida were the funniest on this show. As a teen, (1974-1979), I usually dressed as Brenda in this ep, I had denim shirts and jeans, and long hair. Rhoda shouted so much, she was often pissed.
Been watching this since it aired on TV. Both VH and JK had lost so much weight by Season 4. I think JK looked good with the weight loss and long hair, but VH looked sickly. Always loved this show though!
The producers were aware of this, and mid-way through the season they changed the images at teh beginning of the opening credits to show a healthier Rhoda.
@@Adriana-hp1eh Yes, luckily she started getting back to a more normal weight later in the season. She could have gone through hard times during the summer, I know a lot of women (including myself) lose apetite when going through stress and grief. Who knows? But it's painful to see her so frail.
I was happy when my divorce from my second husband was final. I didn't find out by mail---it happened in the courtroom. I danced for joy all the way to my car. My ex walked real slow with his head down. He didn't have a job---and I left him with all the bills. I worked 2 jobs at the time. Rhoda should be happy; Joe was a jerk.
Joe was only a jerk because they unfortunately decided to write his character that way. But if you'll remember, he only wanted them to live together and wasn't ready to get married again. She kind of pushed it and he went along with it. But he def didn't want to leave the show, but the writers wanted to write him out of the series, so they had him suddenly turn into a selfish jerk by actually wanting to stay married, but just have it be casual.... which obviously couldn't work, if that was a real life situation.
Nancy Walker had just come back after having starred in TWO failed series on ABC in the same season. First was The Nancy Walker Show and then Blansky's Beauties, which aired mid-season. This was also the first season of Rhoda that aired after Mary Tyler Moore had ended the previous season.
Thanks for that trivia. I'm hearing so many inside Hollywood stories lately about actors who thought that they were probably done with a certain show because their pilot for a new show was supposedly a massive hit. Then the new show tanked weeks later, and they were forced to crawl back to the old show with their tails between their legs.

Curt l I wish she never left the show for those other failed sitcoms. The character of Ida is a great part of why I like the series "Rhoda." This show needed her. Ida's departure hurt the show as much as if Julie Kavner had abruptly left the role of Brenda.
Yes, I found out two days later. I enjoyed her mighty spirit. She was determined not to let cancer take her out until she was ready. What a beautiful woman. She lives on in my mountain of memories. Still sad 😢😩☹️ though. She looked fantastic up till the last year of her life
I always watched this when new, and was in my teens then. I thought Brenda was so funny. I like her long hair and its style, as on this ep. I liked Gary. The funniest eps were when Ida was on them.She was good on McMillan and Wife, too. Even when I was 14, I remember thinking that lounge singer Johnny was a creep. Benny was nice, I remember he and Brenda roller skated alot. During the late 1970s, indoor roller skating was a popular pasttime again. Ida thought Benny's dad was Benny Goodman, she misheard him. That was funny.
Prizm2356 I didn't necessarily want Brenda with Gary but I definitely wanted her to break up with Benny. His character was childish, boring, & very irritating.
Skinny looked good on Mary. But on Rhoda, it looked a little too skinny. And she was never exactly heavy in the first place, even though back in the 70s, having a few extra pounds was considered "chubby."
Rhoda looked too thin almost anorexic in Season 4. By now the series was dead. Too many changes killed the show. It almost looks like Rhoda was trying to look like Mary, in fact the show turned almost into the MTM show. Rhoda is best seen on the Mary Tyler Moore and the first 2 seasons of Rhoda. I loved Rhoda and watched the show until the end. Valerie Harper is one of my favorites. May God bless her through her struggles with Cancer. Love you, Val!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I always ♥️ Nancy Walker, and anything with her in it is worth watching. Has anybody ever seen her in Best Foot Forward, with Lucille Ball? She's about twenty years old, and steals every scene she's in.
The big difference I noticed between Rhoda (and the female cast) compared to nowadays is the flat chest and the trend of wearing no bra or one that had no support. Now it's all push up bras, implants and they all look so false. Somewhere in between would be good. VH is waaaaaaay too thin here.
Maybe the women's lib movement with women "burning their bras" had something to do with it. But you're right. I've yet to see anyone who has had a "boob job" that looks natural. Most are much too large and you can tell they're fake from a mile away. (And I'm a female, by the way.)
@@joannenina6855 Because many women at that time stopped wearing bras as a way to demonstrate their freedom/independence. Some literally burned their bras and some just stopped wearing them. That could be why her character wasn't wearing a bra. I'm not judging, just speculating as to why.
A couple days ago I watched a Simpsons episode about Spin-offs, and there was a Rhoda poster in one scene. Rhoda looked old and emaciated and I thought "Wow, that artist really blowed it"...until I watched this. Even Ida looks younger and healthier.
When I was in high school during the late 1970s, many of us girls wore denim shirts like Brenda is wearing. All of us wore jeans everyday, but those shirts were a fad. We called it 'the Mike Stivic look'. I watched this show new, I was 13 when it premeired. I just can't remember Ida being off this show. When she was housekeeper on McMillan and Wife, she was on this show, too. Rhoda rushed her marriage, that's partly why it failed. I agree with Ida, Rhoda used to put her down for being short, a neat freak, and cooking alot. I love Brenda's hair like that. It's the only style I liked of hers. Johnny was cute, he had pretty hair, too. I wonder how it would be if Johnny and Rhoda married, and it was a good marriage. It is so funny, everyone thinks Benny is Benny Goodman's son, and it is Goodwin. Ida was funny with Johnny.
I HATED Ida when i watched Rhoda the first time through. but now I think she really ads character to the show! I guess you have to grow into her character! 💗

I seem to recall Nancy Walker had her own short lived show during season 3 of Rhoda. I loved the Rhoda show but I think Rhoda suffered a great deal without Miss Walker.
I was watching late today and saw your post. I love Nancy Walker. Truly one of the best actors. She gave many people joy and laughter. She's like a great bottle of wine gets better in time.

I like Brenda's hair style in this ep. She should have had it this way from episode 1 to the last one. Brenda was so funny. That denim shirt she is wearing in this ep and jeans is like how I dressed most of the time in high school during the late 1970s. Most of my female classmates dressed that way. Mike Stivic of All in the Family often dressed that way, too. Rhoda was a fool for always wanting Joe back...no matter how badly he treated her, she would have rushed back to him if he had wanted her back. I always thought Rhoda chased after Joe and pushed marriage, and he didn't want to marry anyone, period. He hadn't been divorced that long when she grabbed him. Johnny Venture was shallow but very cute. It always cracked me up when everyone thought Benny Goodwin was Benny Goodman's son.
Remember how Valerie looked for most of Rhoda's Minneapolis days? Heavier. She dropped about a quarter of her body weight. Remember how Julie looked at the beginning of the series? Fat. Now they were both just toothpicks - especially Valerie, who was skinny enough to be a swimsuit model!
Valerie looks terrible in this episode. She lost too much weight and she looks emaciated , It was great to see Nancy Walker back, but the show went down hill from this point! Brenda (Julie Kavner) shined through the whole series!

I was happy when my divorce from my second husband was final. I didn't find out by mail---it happened in the courtroom. I danced for joy all the way to my car. My ex walked real slow with his head down. He didn't have a job---and I left him with all the bills. I worked 2 jobs at the time. Rhoda should be happy; Joe was a jerk.

Joe was only a jerk because they unfortunately decided to write his character that way. But if you'll remember, he only wanted them to live together and wasn't ready to get married again. She kind of pushed it and he went along with it. But he def didn't want to leave the show, but the writers wanted to write him out of the series, so they had him suddenly turn into a selfish jerk by actually wanting to stay married, but just have it be casual.... which obviously couldn't work, if that was a real life situation.

Nancy Walker had just come back after having starred in TWO failed series on ABC in the same season. First was The Nancy Walker Show and then Blansky's Beauties, which aired mid-season. This was also the first season of Rhoda that aired after Mary Tyler Moore had ended the previous season.
Thanks for that trivia. I'm hearing so many inside Hollywood stories lately about actors who thought that they were probably done with a certain show because their pilot for a new show was supposedly a massive hit. Then the new show tanked weeks later, and they were forced to crawl back to the old show with their tails between their legs.

@@AnnusMirabilusWell, I don’t think Nancy came crawling back. ABC had wooed her to star in her own series. Blansky’s Beauties came about because side as part of her contract, ABC had to put her in another series should her first be canceled. She was invited back after her two series were cancelled.
Ida is even more of a see you next Tuesday than she was before.

Nancy Walker returning to the show after being out for season 3. She had two shows which were cancelled in the same season, The Nancy Walker Show which was produced by Norman Lear and Blanskys Beauties, a Happy Days spin off produced by Gary Marshall. After both shows were cancelled Nancy was able to come back to Rhoda to reprise her role as Ida.
Curt l I wish she never left the show for those other failed sitcoms. The character of Ida is a great part of why I like the series "Rhoda." This show needed her. Ida's departure hurt the show as much as if Julie Kavner had abruptly left the role of Brenda.

Yes, I found out two days later. I enjoyed her mighty spirit. She was determined not to let cancer take her out until she was ready. What a beautiful woman. She lives on in my mountain of memories. Still sad 😢😩☹️ though. She looked fantastic up till the last year of her life

I always watched this when new, and was in my teens then. I thought Brenda was so funny. I like her long hair and its style, as on this ep. I liked Gary. The funniest eps were when Ida was on them.She was good on McMillan and Wife, too. Even when I was 14, I remember thinking that lounge singer Johnny was a creep. Benny was nice, I remember he and Brenda roller skated alot. During the late 1970s, indoor roller skating was a popular pasttime again. Ida thought Benny's dad was Benny Goodman, she misheard him. That was funny.

I liked Benny! I liked Gary better but I liked Benny with Brenda. Especially compared to Nick Lobo!

I agree! She looks unhealthy in Season 4. But, it was the 70s, and skinny was very much the style.
It was always like this. Take a look at the models lists.
Skinny looked good on Mary. But on Rhoda, it looked a little too skinny. And she was never exactly heavy in the first place, even though back in the 70s, having a few extra pounds was considered "chubby."
Rhoda looked too thin almost anorexic in Season 4. By now the series was dead. Too many changes killed the show. It almost looks like Rhoda was trying to look like Mary, in fact the show turned almost into the MTM show. Rhoda is best seen on the Mary Tyler Moore and the first 2 seasons of Rhoda. I loved Rhoda and watched the show until the end. Valerie Harper is one of my favorites. May God bless her through her struggles with Cancer. Love you, Val!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always ♥️ Nancy Walker, and anything with her in it is worth watching. Has anybody ever seen her in Best Foot Forward, with Lucille Ball? She's about twenty years old, and steals every scene she's in.
The big difference I noticed between Rhoda (and the female cast) compared to nowadays is the flat chest and the trend of wearing no bra or one that had no support. Now it's all push up bras, implants and they all look so false. Somewhere in between would be good. VH is waaaaaaay too thin here.
Maybe the women's lib movement with women "burning their bras" had something to do with it. But you're right. I've yet to see anyone who has had a "boob job" that looks natural. Most are much too large and you can tell they're fake from a mile away. (And I'm a female, by the way.)

@@joannenina6855 Because many women at that time stopped wearing bras as a way to demonstrate their freedom/independence. Some literally burned their bras and some just stopped wearing them. That could be why her character wasn't wearing a bra. I'm not judging, just speculating as to why.

A couple days ago I watched a Simpsons episode about Spin-offs, and there was a Rhoda poster in one scene. Rhoda looked old and emaciated and I thought "Wow, that artist really blowed it"...until I watched this. Even Ida looks younger and healthier.

When I was in high school during the late 1970s, many of us girls wore denim shirts like Brenda is wearing. All of us wore jeans everyday, but those shirts were a fad. We called it 'the Mike Stivic look'. I watched this show new, I was 13 when it premeired. I just can't remember Ida being off this show. When she was housekeeper on McMillan and Wife, she was on this show, too. Rhoda rushed her marriage, that's partly why it failed. I agree with Ida, Rhoda used to put her down for being short, a neat freak, and cooking alot. I love Brenda's hair like that. It's the only style I liked of hers. Johnny was cute, he had pretty hair, too. I wonder how it would be if Johnny and Rhoda married, and it was a good marriage. It is so funny, everyone thinks Benny is Benny Goodman's son, and it is Goodwin. Ida was funny with Johnny.

Valerie Harper went on a liquid diet prior to the 4th season and lost nearly 40 pounds. Lost too much. The looked better in season 5.

I seem to recall Nancy Walker had her own short lived show during season 3 of Rhoda. I loved the Rhoda show but I think Rhoda suffered a great deal without Miss Walker.
I was watching late today and saw your post. I love Nancy Walker. Truly one of the best actors. She gave many people joy and laughter. She's like a great bottle of wine gets better in time.

I like Brenda's hair style in this ep. She should have had it this way from episode 1 to the last one. Brenda was so funny. That denim shirt she is wearing in this ep and jeans is like how I dressed most of the time in high school during the late 1970s. Most of my female classmates dressed that way. Mike Stivic of All in the Family often dressed that way, too. Rhoda was a fool for always wanting Joe back...no matter how badly he treated her, she would have rushed back to him if he had wanted her back. I always thought Rhoda chased after Joe and pushed marriage, and he didn't want to marry anyone, period. He hadn't been divorced that long when she grabbed him. Johnny Venture was shallow but very cute. It always cracked me up when everyone thought Benny Goodwin was Benny Goodman's son.

Remember how Valerie looked for most of Rhoda's Minneapolis days? Heavier. She dropped about a quarter of her body weight. Remember how Julie looked at the beginning of the series? Fat. Now they were both just toothpicks - especially Valerie, who was skinny enough to be a swimsuit model!

Valerie looks terrible in this episode. She lost too much weight and she looks emaciated , It was great to see Nancy Walker back, but the show went down hill from this point! Brenda (Julie Kavner) shined through the whole series!
