Obviously they identified him as "the voice of Garfield." Even though I was a huge Rhoda fan as far back as '96 I never realized he was the voice of Carlton as well until much later.
Gosh, they are both so 70's beautiful in this episode. Reminds me of my mother in her young pictures. I miss this time, even tho I never really lived it.
I need to represent Team Benny here. Gary is charming but by his own admission he didn't even notice her before now. Benny is sweet and sees Brenda as a prize from the start.
I really missed the character of Gary Levy when he left the show in season 5. I actually wish they would have gone with him as Brenda's boyfriend instead of Benny. This is one of my favorite Rhoda episodes. And I agree with the general consensus below, Valarie and Julie both look particularly beautiful in this episode.
I just wrote in a different thread yesterday that Gary/Ron was probably the show's X factor, and when he left in season 5 his absence probably killed the show.

This is my favorite episode! Ron Silver is too cute! Brenda is my favorite character, but Ron is right up there with her. I didn't like the way they had him acting in the beginning but he definitely got much better.

(Sigh) Brenda looks really terrific in this ep. Rhoda was funny at the start, when she entered Brenda's apt., talking of the heat. Gary was cute, and his store had some cool clothes.
I was devastated that they didn't choose Gary for Brenda's boyfriend . They had killer chemistry and he really evolved into a great character . And yes Brenda looks so amazing this season. They finally let her wear clothes that aren't totally frumpy as well.
I always found Gary to be much more charming than Benny. Benny is so awkward, that he's actually just annoying instead of funny. Brenda picked to wrong guy.

I like Benny. In season 5 he is very sweet and loving to Brenda. I like Gary too but he generally seems more confident and aggressive than Benny. These are not bad qualities but I think he would overpower Brenda.
Weather-wise, this episode reminds me of the summer of 1980. The Midwest was so hot and dry, for 2 weeks it was over 100 degrees.It was even worse in Texas. Some people died. In kansas, we had no brownouts, but my house had no a/c, just floor fans. Summer is my fave season, but that particular summer was horrid. I remember those shirts in the late 1970s, like the striped one Rhoda has on. I never wore any back then, but remember them in catalogs. How can Benny stand to wear a jacket in that scorching climate?
I'm in Texas and remember the heatwave of 1980 very well. Me and 2 friends laid out in the sun every day. I finally got sick from it after a couple months. It was 105 with high humidity in Houston. 110 in Dallas. If I tried that now, I woukd drop dead. Dr made me go inside with a/c for 2 weeks. Man we were dark and looked so good ! At night it got down to 80 and I would get so cold i slept under a fluffy comforter. No a/c until I had to go home sick. I turned 17 that summer.

It was fun growing up then. I lived on Long Island in NY. When this season debuted on TV in '77, I was eleven. My friends and I were very active after school, on weekends, in summer time. Lots of walking, and bicycling around. But we always made some time for TV. I think it was a very good period of life, before the stupid, awkward teenage changes came around, haha. When you're 11, you're still a kid in many ways.
I was 17 and as much as I love our technology now and more opportunities for women profession wise I wouldn't trade being a teen in the 70's for anything. The clothes, tv shows, MUSIC, everything was organic including our marijuana. Hitchhiking everywhere until you worked enough to get your first car (muscle car of course - mine was a '68 GTO) then putting a dollars worth of gas in and cruising all night. The world was slower paced and groovey. Oh and cruising over to Canada to spend the day without needing a passport.
I would kill for either 1 of these 2 women. So nice, so sweet, so down to earth, so wholesome..... If only it was that way in real every day life, particularly nowadays in this scary horrific 21st century we live in......
Yes I miss how friendly people were. We actually talked to each other and made friends with strangers easily most of the time. People cared about others. It was wonderful. People are too cold and distant these days. Back then we agreed to disagree and accepted that that was just how they felt. We didn't " cancel " people because they liked something we didn't. It was all about being who you were.
Ron Silver as Gary would have made a better guy for Rhoda or her sister. He was a fine actor. He played role as Sandra Bullocks friend and shrink in movie The Network. Great movie and Ron shone.

The camera adds 10 ppunds. Rhoda is way too thin. I got down that thin once from nerves and was emaciated. I dont know how hirls get that thin and function. I was dizzy and weak and couldnt get out of bed except for holding to the walls to go tinkle or throw up. Be careful the man you choose. He made me that sick gor months until my grandma rescued me . And friends stepped up.

Why choose? In high school you had the period where you could be dating multiple guys. You were free to do that because you weren't officially "going steady." Neither guy was "going steady" with Brenda, so she was free to date both of them and others. If one wanted an exclusive relationship he ought to have asked for it. As long as Brenda was honest, which was the problem. She ought to have said "I like both of you and I will go out with both of you until I fall in love with one of you." In the meantime enjoy dating both. At the last however, it seemed they wanted to be exclusive with each other and exclude her! As for hairstyles, I loved Brenda's hair in a bun and Rhoda's in a side pony.

Valerie Harper was said to have hired a physical trainer that year to prepare for her role in the film "Chapter Two" where her body was showcased in several scenes. Weight was always an issue during her career and this was the fittest, albeit gangly for some, throughout the series 5yr run.
Ok I cant understand him. What did Benny give the guy for change? I've watched this episode 100 times and can't figure if he said a head or a hat. Either one isn't funny ,so maybe it's something else.
