It seems as though you have gotten some very relevant advice. After implementing this advice and experience, you could now go to Canon confident that your concerns are on solid ground and they won't consider you to have made, what we call in the US, a "rookie mistake" Best wishes for a speedy and satisfactory resolution mate!

I have seen one or two reports of instability when taking video with that combo, notably Jan Wegener. His experience seems to be different to yours as it happens at the start of videoing and can be corrected by slapping the lens!! This may not be the same problem, I don't have the R7 so cannot comment further but it might be worth having a look at his video.

I have watched that exact video. Difference with my combo is it happens 5-10 seconds in. Have tried slapping the lens, but again that just resets it back to 5-10 seconds before shaking again.

Ive always turned IS off when using a tripod as if the camera/lens is steady IS fights itself and induces shake, so I'm not sure its a fault. Then again ive never used a lens that long but I would say its just normal, isnt it?.

So thats "normal" unfortunately. when its being used and there is no movement the is will get jitters. Ive found on a tripod or mono i can leave is on if i grip the camera or lens. the small movements of my hand let is work well but also be steadier from tripod. the ibis shouldnt be issue i dont think it works at 800mm. i usually just try to incorporate some movement or panning with the shot and its not an issue.

Yeah I’ve learned when not to try and use it. If I can steady using my elbow, that allows some movement to be picked up by the IS, and therefore not jump about.

Agreed. Unless the tripod is locked down or you are using a remote trigger, it should be on. Most of the time I am on a tripod I am swinging the camera around following action.

That's very poor, one would expect better than that. Definitely contact Canon, they may know the answer if it's a common issue with this lens.

Is it instability or just the fact that you are dealing with massive magnification with that combo, so even the slightest image imperfection is going to be magnified as well?

A firmware update should be done so that you can turn off the IS of either the lens or camera, so they aren’t fighting each other.

It even happens at the short end

Hmm, you bought it in Hong Kong 😞! Are you sure its a genuine Canon lens? Saw a program about two guys bought really expensive US brand golf clubs while in Hong Kong, after the second guy had returned one of the clubs to a US shop, the factory smelled a rat. Later it was discovered the shop in Hong Kong was a knock-up, and was round the back of the genuine shop. Check with Canon to ensure you got a genuine Canon lens.

Was actually second hand. The original owner had bought it in Europe a couple months back, and gave the shop owner the receipt with lens serial number. It’s too complicated a product to fake. A golf club is literally a chunk of metal.

IS shouldn't be used in combination with monopods / tripods or any form of support.
Todays photographers are way too reliant on IS and AF.

It’s ok if there’s no wind around, but a moving bird, and wind, and no IS on a tripod at 800mm, is not gonna work

@@stormcabbirdsInteresting, since that's exactly how many of us have been shooting since the film days! Seem to have plenty of sharp images!
My opinion is that IS should be off on a locked down tripod, but should be on with a monopod that tends to sway and on a loose gimbal head on a tripod, as the lens is still moving around to some degree. I am usually swinging it around following action. In reality I tend to leave it on because I forget to turn it back on once turning it off.

@@alansach8437 but you didn’t shoot 4K video in the old days, which is where the problem is, particularly at 1280mm

@@stormcabbirdsIv not got the lens but could test my RF600/11. I tend to always leave IS ON as when it detects its on a tripod, it turns it off anyway. However your 200-800 is still 800mm on the R7, it’s the crop factor giving you the impression it’s 1280 since the full image circle is designed to cover full frame. Will take my RF for a spin on the weekend and report any findings

Also should have mentioned it happens at every focal length.
