    Hi Dan, Great video, thanks for sharing. I plan on using this one along with a few others to build my own turtle pond for my DBT soon. A couple questions for you if you don't mind.
    1. Did you end up using any substrate? I have seen a few different opinions online about this.
    2. How has the pond held up so far, any issues?
    3. What is the upkeep like? I would assume just some water changes per month, and declorinator?
    I appreciate the help! thanks

    • @DanTheTurtleMan_
      @DanTheTurtleMan_  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! I didnt use any substrate in this, if any I'd use crushed coral. The pond has had no issues so far, liner is in tact. The upkeep is rinsing the filter out once every week or two and water changes every 3 weeks or so. I'm moving, so prepare for another pond build video 😂

    • @DanTheTurtleMan_
      @DanTheTurtleMan_  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!!! So that's relatively simple! In order to have a proper ecosystem you're going to need a filter, and the way to filter the water is with a pump to push the water. You simply use that pump, or a different one, to pump the water out of the pond and then re fill with a hose. Thanks for watching!

    Been thinking about building a turtle pond in our backyard. No access to electricity so using solar power for water filter and waterfall. My question, what's the best way to clean a turtle pond without constantly having to drain the water?

  • @NotAMuse
    @NotAMuse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Dan, I hope you’re doing well. My yellow belly sliders shells are changing weird colors, and I’m scared they might have septicemia and shell rot. I don’t have enough money to take them to the vet right now, but I was wondering if you had ever experienced this or have any advice to guide me on the next steps. Both turtles shells’ scutes are fading into a dull white-ish color that even a soft toothbrush bath can’t take off. It’s not soft and feels like the rest of the shell. The sides and middle of the plastron are reddish-pinkish. I think I saw a darker shadow of a blackish spot on one of the babies. It’s not one of his plastron dots. We noticed their shells turning the dull-white about a week ago and thought the basking area was too hot (90-100 degrees), so we moved the lamp higher and now it’s around 85. We waited a week to change the water yesterday, so I know that probably contributed to their shell status. I’m not sure how serious their condition is. I can probably pay for the vet visit with my credit card if need be, but I’m between jobs right now and my savings are low. I’m very surprised because they are behaving like usual, swimming around, basking, not lethargic and no weird eye swellings. We feed them one turtle pellet and one dried cricket a day each. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. (Sorry for this long comment, I’m really scared for them right now.)

      Hey Melody! Ok so I have some great news for you! First off, those two little ones look like Red Ear Slider hatchlings, not Yellow Bellies although they are hard to distinguish when young and often sold mislabeled. The second thing is that I would highly suggest feeding more than you are right now, and not feeding a cricket everyday. If you look on my channel I have a "Turtle Basics" playlist and a video on feeding your turtles. I would recommend purchasing some Zoo Med Hatchling Formula for your little ones and feeding in a separate container, and putting in a bunch of pellets and letting them eat as much as they can in 5 minutes! They're little pigs, so they eat a ton! What kind of pellets do you feed now? Crickets should be fed maybe once a week or every 2 weeks as they're more of a treat than a staple diet. In reference to the septicemia, I once was worried about this issue and was very scared just as you are, however as long as you're changing the water every week or so and have decent filtration, you have nothing to worry about! My Cumberland slider had red on his plastron as well, however it turned out it was just his blood vessels that you could see through the shell. Neat huh? Your little ones look totally fine and very healthy! I would just suggest feeding a bit more and you can raise those basking temps up to about 90 :) Keep up the great work!

      Also, as for the dull colorings, hatchlings usually turn to a darker or lighter color as they grow and get larger. Don't worry about it at all!!! They're known to totally switch colors on people :D

      DanTheGuppyMan DanTheGuppyMan Thank you for your prompt response. Glad to know what type of turtle they are now! We’re currently feeding them the Tetra Reptomin Floating Food Sticks with Calcium and Vitamin C. Also, at what shell length do they become juveniles and adults? I will definitely rewatch your turtle basics playlist and make sure my level of care is up to standard. Wow, that is really cool about the red being their blood vessels! Whew, okay so no septicemia is such a good thing. Internet research can be such a scary thing. Yes, we will definitely continue to change the water every week. Currently they’re both in a plastic tub we’ve filled up with 10 gallons of water and we have an Aqueon 40 gallon water filter. I’m waiting to transfer them into a 27 gallon bin after we move apartments at the end of the month (my mom thinks that we are doing too much and that turtles don’t need that much space). They were originally in a clear plastic tub with 3 gallons of water, and I’m glad to see them not trying to swim through the plastic walls anymore.

      DanTheGuppyMan Awesome! I was reading that they could get darker, but not many sites mentioned they would get lighter. My husband was sure it was due to sunburn from the high basking temperature. I’m glad I can tell my little brother that the turtles will be with us for the next 20+ years when he comes home from school today. Thank you Dan! You’re the best!
