    I remember choosing the Saturn over the PS because everybody had a PS and I wanted to be different! I will never regret that decision! I still have my Saturn and I loved every second I spent with it!!

      The Shining Force 3 games are an absolute MUST for any RPG fans wanting to get in on the Saturn.
      Although we only officially got the 1st scenario in English, Scenarios 2 & 3 have fantastic fan-made english translations that are easily obtained online. **if you do this though, you need the fan-translated version of Scenario 1 as well** because the official English version of Scenario 1 had its story altered to end and conclude right there at the end of Scenario 1. But if you get the fan-translated version, it retains the original story that goes right into Scenario 2 (and Scenario 2 going right into Scenario 3). An absolutely amazing series that's criminally missed out on since it was only on the Saturn, and even more so because the second two games weren't even playable in English until a few years ago. And each game took me around 60 hours to get through, so that's almost 200 hours of fantastic story telling & rpg goodness between Scenarios 1, 2 & 3. An absolute MUST

    There is a great plug and play HDMI cable for the Saturn now as well. The RAD2X cable, which actually has the same technology as the RetroTink under the hood. It taps into RGB, correctly processes the signal, and line doubles it to 480p. It’s relatively cheap ($50?) and is lightyears better than any of the competition in that price range. I use this cable into an mclassic and the picture is god tier

    • @kristopheralonge2813
      @kristopheralonge2813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I consider the dedicated Saturn RAD2X cable currently the best way to play Saturn on a flat screen. Perfect balance of picture quality and convenience. Optional smoothing and doesn't even require external power ^_^

      AirCooledMan2006 I pair this with a Retrotink2x, and an mcable gaming edition, and this combo gives the best possible image due to HdRetrovision’s genesis cable having the brightness switch built in. Does RAD2X have that brightness switch, or just smoothing Switch ?

      HDMI solution for saturn. Yes there is that stupid pound cable and that will be fine for some people, but a true HDMI internal mod like we have for dreamcast will not happen easily. Due to the way it spits out video, developers like Citrus3KPSI and Marshall and other HDMI developers, stated the saturn would be difficult to do a HDMI mod for. If you really want an AWESOME HDMI mod for the saturn and this would actually be cheaper and easier than if there was a internal HDMI solution. GET THIS.. Now keep this in mind the DCDIGITAL (DCHDMI) mod from Citrus3kPSI is over $150 nearly $200 installed if you can't solder youself. SO this is where the retrotink product line comes in handy.
      1. get a Scart RGB cable and use it on a PVM/BVM, or on a RGB modded TV or even a Frameister or OSSS and done...
      2. If you want to use it on a really awesome consumer CRT television like a D series or Trinitron. Get a Scart Cable and a SCART2COMP and plug the scart into that box and then output Componenet to the CRT TV. This looks amazing.
      3. Get a Rad2X Saturn cable ALso from retrotink developer.
      4. Get a SCART2HDMI. Also from retrotink developer. - I love this one it works great 2X upscale no lag of RGB scart on saturn to a HDMI TV. WOrks perfect.
      I personally have a GSCART SWITCH I plug my saturn into that. Then I output one scart to my OSSC to my HDTV. The second output goes SCart to the SCART2COMP from Mike Chi at retrotink and I then have RGB quality video on my D series CRT television. Looks amazing.

    If you have an official save cartridge, games like Panzer Dragoon Saga have no issue with them, and you can save to both internal memory and the memory card no problem if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure Sonic R lets you save to both for example. The reason why it tells you to remove the cartridge is because it's detecting a cheat cartridge (which your cartridge has built in functionality for), it's a form of cheat protection.

    • @marciopinho6100

      You can still use a action replay cartridge with panzer dragoon saga and save to it, you need a extra code to add in the cheat menu which will bypass the remove cartridge screen and it works fine

      If you try to play the NTSC or PAL version of Panzer Dragoon Saga on a different-region Saturn console using an Action Replay, a “PLEASE REMOVE THE CARTRIDGE” message will pop up on-screen and the game will not load. Fortunately though, you can avoid this problem if you input the following Action Replay code:
      Master Code: F6000914 C305 B6002800 0000
      Cheat Code: 06002EB0 0009 (for playing the NTSC-U/PAL version with Action Replay card inserted)
      This code has been tested with an Action Replay Version 1.94, and we can confirm that it should definitely allow you to do the following (with this Action Replay model):
      Play the NTSC version of the game on an NTSC-J Saturn
      Play the NTSC version of the game on a PAL Saturn
      Play the PAL version of the game on an NTSC-J Saturn
      We would assume that it will also let you play the PAL version of the game on an NTSC Saturn, and we would assume that this code will work with Action Replay models later than Version 1.94 (and possibly even earlier), but bear in mind that these things are currently not confirmed.

      I heard somewhere that certain games do not let you save to a memory cartridge whatsoever, but they can be simply transferred to the cartridge from the internal memory when the save is not in use. I don't have any games that forcibly save to the internal memory, however, so I'm not sure how true it is.

    Technically speaking, KOF95 uses a ROM cartridge, not RAM, since it actually contains game data (the game's graphics if I'm not mistaken). That and an Ultraman fighting game were the only Saturn titles to come with ROM cartridges.

      @hybridvigga 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, all the backgrounds are on it for KOF 95, you'd kinda miss those if you took em out I'm guessing. It's why they had to load fighters in between rounds on that one, but the other KOF games used the RAM and just loaded both full teams at once into the extra room.

And I believe the final product is currently being manufactured. The great thing about the Satiator is that it plugs into the back of the console so you can still use your cd drive as well. Thanks for your enthusiasm for the Saturn. However, I just want to clarify a few points:
    You CAN transfer data from the internal memory to the memory cartridge through the internal memory manager or, if you're using an Action Replay cart, through the cart's memory manager option. Thus, you can back up your save files. Most games can also save directly to the memory cart, although not the Action Replay.
    You CAN play Panzer Dragoon Saga with a memory cart and save your data onto a memory cart. Just not an Action Replay cart.
    The CR2032 batteries last approximately THREE YEARS (I've had one last up to five years!), which is hardly "they don't last long".

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right, I could have phrased this better. I was saying that in some cases, there are games that don't allow you to transfer saves. I didn't mean to imply the console itself can not, I even showed the option to do so via Action Replay around 6:10.
      I was wrong about PDS, didn't know about that until the comments.
      Battery life being long, highly debatable.

    The Fram mod is great. There are actually repros that use it in snes and nes games to negate the need for a save battery. The saturn burned through the batteries because it used it for both the clock and the sram. However because it was a lot more sram than normal it would deplete power much faster. Now here is a question for you. How long are the batteries lasting for the clock now that fram is installed? Is it still depleting unneeded power for a fram chip (basically does it still think it needs to to save games) or is it holding charge much longer since all it is needed for is the internal clock? I am asking because the date and time question is annoying every boot and it'd be nice if I could make it hold for a good 10+ years

    23:05 that can only be possible via high quality Analog to Digital Converter, like the Chimeric Systems HDMI or the OG Xbox, except MakeMHZ made pure digital to digital HDMI. No, the Sega Saturn's VDP chips actually converts the signal to analog so it's technically native. I know the RAD2X exists but it outputs YUV 444 instead of RGB like Scart provides. Scart is the true best option because the Saturn's video signal is sort of analog to begin with, I think the reason why Sega did this is to maintain hardware space and analog CRT convenience.

    Hi Adam Luke from the UK, really enjoy your channel it’s one of the better gaming channels out there.
    I agree with most things you say especially the Saturn being the most underrated games console ever, not sure why probably damage done from the mega cd & 32x, and yes it is a very reliable machine I had mine since 1997 traded a Panasonic 3do in for it best thing I did, I still play to this day it’s faultless. I had many arguments with my PlayStation friends in the day but I think I was biased and thought the Saturn was a true gamers console it was almost arcade perfect it had fewer games but I prefer quality over quantity.
    Just a couple of things I wanted to point out, the mark 2 Saturn controllers ( like the Japanese version) r one of the best controllers ever made I had mine over 20 years and work perfect to this day it’s best all round controller especially for fighting games like street fighter. I bought one of these wireless retro bit controllers for it, cosmetically they look fantastic but for fast paced games the responsiveness is not great and the D-pad doesn’t feel right especially for street fighter and Sega rally, and thunder hawk 2 wasn’t working with it, I’d stick to my original all day.
    And panzer dragoon saga does save on the cart fine, whether it’s different on pal than US but I only use the genuine black Sega Saturn memory cart and never had any issues saving on it.
    Thanks again Adam and I hope you do more channels about the Sega Saturn

    I'm looking into purchasing the FRAM mod to install myself, but I'm wondering if it makes the internal storage any larger. One of my big issues with the Saturn has always been that it' limited internal storage can die on a whim, but even when you get the memory card, half the games don't save to it natively. Some games take up most of the Saturn's built in memory as is, so if this mod not only stops the internal storage from dying AND makes it larger too, I'm getting this for my system.

  • @TokyoScarab

    The Rhea / Phoebe are really good drive replacement options except for the fact that they're basically impossible to buy without paying scalping prices! The guy who "sells" them (if you count selling 10 boards once a year selling) basically extorts the crap out of the mod and sells the mod to people who then in turn charge $500+ for it on ebay. It's really a shame. Even if the boards were up for sale, I don't even know if I would buy it even though I really want it. The guy has some major problems and I really don't feel comfortable giving him money (even if I could) and basically encouraging this behavior. If you're looking for a good saturn mod, either wait for the Satiator by Professor Abrasive to be finished, or hit up the newest contender the Fenrir (which you can actually buy!). Both are way better options! Happy modding! :D

    My cousin had a Saturn that’s the only way I knew it existed....I never owned one. I was a sega kid early on I always felt that the master system and genesis was better than the Nintendo consoles although they both have great games I’m always gravitated to sega. When I went the the arcades sega always had cool games and like afterburner had these cool interactive machines that would twist and turn like you were in a jet or a race car. I did have the sega cd and 32x and dreamcast. I recently bought the sega Saturn and see what a great console it was. After the Dreamcast I did buy a Sony PlayStation but then the Xbox came out and it reminded me of the sega master system that didn’t sell well but was much better then the competition and could really create better looking games and I gravitated to the Xbox after that. I still play my retro sega games that will never get old.

    How many consoles can't achieve an "Everdrive functionality" without a hardware modification? By "Everdrive functionality," I mean: actual everdrives, SD Card readers (GDEMU, Rhea), dumping games on an HDD after installing a softmod (OG Xbox, PS2, Wii).
    Outside of the current generation, I can think of the PS1 (the PSIO requires a hardware modification) and the X360. You can install games on the X360 but you still need the game disc inside the optical drive.

    Saturn cartridge pins are notorious for being rubbish , they were cheaply made and quite soft as a result (no doubt in order to save costs). From Sega's 1995 perspective it makes sense since you were really meant to only plug in a memory cart and leave it there. That being said, even swapping official carts alot (like the memory expansions) will wear out the slot too.
    In regards to PAL games on an NTSC console, no PAL Saturn game has a 60hz option, instead what happens is that most PAL games have no PAL optimisations whatsoever , meaning that on an NTSC system , there is no speed or resolution penalty and the games run as they should. The games which didn't work properly were PAL optimised and the screen being cut off is due to those PAL games having their resolutions optimised for PAL resolutions (288p/576i). An NTSC TV will therefore not show the whole screen since standard NTSC res is 240p/480i
