I didn't even realize there were that many birds in a single flock - WOW! and I'm a birdwatcher! This channel is combination educational and dramatic!!
Those relatively slow planes of those days, had very good gliding capacities compared to todays jets. If they had been a bit higher, they could have performed a good emergeny landing
There was also a situation unknown at the time that due to the engine failures, the hydraulic flight control system became unusable rendering control of the airplane impossible. As a result, the hydraulic flight control disconnect system was kept available to the second officer at all times.
Great job mauricio I come from your Spanish channel very informative and entertaining. Earnestly speaking this unfortunate there circumstances that you can't forsee. Anyway the crew performed their best to save aircraft. Beat for everyone. Happy 2022
Starlings fly in tight flocks called "murmurations", which makes them look like a dense cloud pf black smoke, with some individual flocks numbering as high as 750,000 birds. Flocks will move in unison in shape-shifting "choreographed" flocks during migration season. I'm not the least surprised they brought down a plane.
The problem with the Elektra is that the wing is too small to generate enough lift wihtou being blowned by the engines running.....An l-188 can't glide , it stalls.
It glides just fine, but not at the speed it was flying at. I believe that ALL propeller aircraft have a speed range near V2 where they will stall if the engines stop. The pilot should know that range and accelerate through it as soon as any obstacles are cleared.
This one isn't well known but I read about it in a pop science mag as a kid. Seems they though the Electra was a bad plane. Rule number one of losing thrust at low level, avoid a stall
Uhhhhh, years after the initial report from the CAB, a National Airlines pilot caused an amendment to the "official cause". He stated that he had had instances where the locking-pin on the pilot's seats could be inoperative and cause the seats to suddenly slide back. When the CAB went back out to inspect the wreckage, sure enough the seat locking-pin for the seat the PIC was in was missing. It was also determined that the momentary power-loss would not have been sufficient to cause the accident. The bird-theory was disproven after all.
Copilot was flying, not the captain. Explain the loss of power in two engines and the FODDing of one engine. I have had to clean up and repair the effects of bird strikes; have you? What is your background in aviation? Mine is in aircraft maintenance. You DO realize that the FE on an Electra controls the throttles and prop controls?
@MPC Fligth Recreations @MPC Fligth Recreations Hello brothder buenas tardes execelente contenido de accidentes aéreos muy genial tu reconstrucción saludos cordiales 💯🇨🇴👏👏✈️🎶🎵📀🤔😮🧐🥇🤫🤐. Happy new year. Merry Cristian. Bendiciones éxitos . ! Haz la reconstrucción del vuelo 66 de airfrance ?
Never heard of a turboprop that came down as a result of birdstrike. The Allison apears to have a axial compressor. Centrifugal compressors give less pressure but are more resistant against debris. To bad....
Wrong livery. The N5533 was painted in the original Fly Eastern Airlines Prop Jet Electra scheme when it crashed. It never made it to the post LEAP Super Electra livery in this "Fake" video.
I do not often on channels such as this see an incident of which I was entirely unfamiliar. Thanks for hunting this one up. Great job.
Thanks!
Same here. The channel owner should also add words like air disaster, crash, passenger airplane, crash animation, etc to attract more viewers.
My Mom's favorite plane. She was a stewardess for Eastern Airlines and probably flew on that plane.
At Sunrise you will see Thousands of Starlings doing Acrobatics together it even looks like a Dark Cloud spiraling back and forth !
Known as a 'murmuration'.....
It's unfortunate that starlings are not so tiny.

The first major birdstrike airline disaster.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

It's Electra not Elektra and without not wihtou.

This reminds me of the 1963 birds movie
