EDIT 2: I've read how some people find the references to TH-cam friends/colleagues annoying. I never really thought about how this could be the case for the viewers who don't know all these in-jokes. Sorry if you found it distracting; I'll do the references more in moderation in the future. :)
EDIT: After some mentioning of it in the comments, I'll explain a little on why I called the added navigators "pointless". I don't have anything against players being able to turn on assistance, but if a player needs assistance to begin with, then giving them three navigator choices seems needlessly convoluted and counterintuitive? I don't see a good reason why Alia couldn't have covered all these aspects instead. Anyway, it's a very minor nitpick I had, hence why it only got a passing mention and nothing more.
Hey, folks! The long awaited Mega Man X8 review is finally here! I really hope you enjoy it!
There's something I'd like to ask you guys for when you're done watching. I have recently really been trying to improve my writing; you know, being less fluffy and more concise. This is to improve video pacing and to prevent padding/repetition/dragging. I'd love to hear from you if you found it noticeable in this X8 review, and an improvement compared to videos like X6 and especially X7! I'm also open to critique, so if there are things about my writing that could still be improved, I'm all ears!
Also, as a side note: I am going to work with a talented individual on rebranding the channel sometime soon. Yes, I know, AGAIN, but considering he is significantly better at designing appealing channel art and thumbnails than I am, it should be worth it. The current thumbnail, though, is only a ''prototype'', if you will, since none of the new channel branding exists yet, and he could do this for me in time for the release of this video. Still, I figured I'll use this early thumbnail as a glimpse of what's to come, and I think it already looks better than what I can do! So yeah, just thought I'd inform you that some changes are happening again, and that I am therefore in a transitioning phase with the branding. The inconsistencies should be resolved down the line!

I'd say this: Hope that I'll see from you a review of Megaman ZX/Advent at some point. This series waits long enough. J's gonna do it, I'd love to see your point as well. Just noticed that many of your gripes with X8 were actually accounted in MMZX series. I don't really go with Zero in this case as series was different enough and has different core design so ZX is more of continuation of X and Zero. Which actually makes more sense in this regard.

I noticed there was something different on the way you wrote things this time, but I couldn't point out what it was.
Btw, something I think could be better (this is just a suggestion), is that you could start by the flaws maybe? I think most of people preffer when things go to the optimist side of things. Since it's a 50min video and the good parts were mainly at the start, it created an impression of "bad game", even with certain balances, or maybe, it's just that the beggining was so full of good points that it made the bad points breaking it later on
Aaaalso, not saying it was a bad video, I can say that it pretty much was one of my favourites on the entire X reviews, so, not sure, the way I wrote up there was seeming like I was being harsh, but at the end of the day, I loved it too much, so... just consider it's something that popped my mind, and not "the truth"

Lumine and the NG reploids planned a revolution before Sigma approached them. Lumine's plan was to kill off Sigma because in his mind, Sigma was an outdated piece of trash. I think it's meant to symbolize that Sigma was destroyed by his own ideology. Sigma considered his creators inferior and wants to wipe them out. His "children", the NG reploids, consider him inferior and plans to wipe out all the old model reploids, Sigma included. So X killing off Sigma just made things easier for Lumine.

X as a franchise is such a mixed bag of weird ideas, that I would love to see someone give a fresh, ultra-polished take on these that worked the best (like Inti did with Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 to the lesser extent) .

I understand using the X4 sprite-based art direction because of X4's praise, though X Challenge is all the closest to a 32-bit retro-revival and i wouldn't mind another one cooking up in the future. I'd take SNES-style/16-bit because X1-3 had fewer interference with the gameplay, making it even less stressful and even faster paced.
It would be interesting if X9 did away with preboss dialogue and boss warning sirens mainly to emulate the X1-3 format yet have modern 2.5D graphics.
HD yet 100% 2D a-la Ducktales Remastered would also be a pretty good pick.

One of the reasons why X8 is as loved as it is is because it came out after the two abysmal failures that were X6 and X7. It's much better designed than those games and can be enjoyed unironically, unlike X6 and X7.
Generally, I consider X8 to be a redemption of sorts for the X series. Going back to 2D was a smart choice, the character balancing is much better, the level design is mostly pretty decent, the story is one of the better ones of the X series for what it's worth, the voice acting is solid, and is challenging in a way that is mostly enjoyable. That being said, I do think X8 has some issues. The 100% completion is trash, while I can deal with most of the level gimmicks, GigaBolt Man-O-War and Burn Rooster's stages can go suck a dick. The spike hit detection is a bit finicky, at least from my experience, which leads to nervousness when playing.
X8 is my fourth favorite X game, though I can see why others would see it as overhyped.

i enjoy x6 unironically... shadow armor with ultimate buster and hyperdash is my favorite x armor ever... and i like the red fight in x7... and x8 having 2 awful bike stages and an awful scroll stage plus the spike miniboss really turns me off... i like panda stage tho

Yeah, that you enter a cheat code for to even get. The fact that you use a cheat code to enjoy X6 unironically proves my point. Having to cheat to unironically enjoy a game means that the game is probably not very good.

im a big fan of x6, because im into collectibles that are actually usefull, i find x3, x6 and x8 as some of the games that i come back the most, they also are the games that give the most replayability because of how the upgrades work as opposed to "use armor, or go armor-less challenge" of the other games.
they are not for everyone, and i cant help but laugh how ironic that, the reasons i enjoy them as much is why so many people hate them...

Heads up: Wall of text ahead. Cause as our fella Retro says it, quickies don't cut it.
Xellent. Just Xellent. You didn't over-hype the game, neither did you treat it like an inexcusable mess. X8 is my first Mega Man game (not just X game) that I played to completion. It's also one of my favorites up there with X1 and X4. Still, I understand most of the critique it receives and acknowledge its negatives. And I have some points to follow up with:
    1) Verily, the secondary weapons/techniques are considerably underutilized overall outside boss weaknesses. But a number of them are very useful in general and outright broken under certain conditions. X's squeeze ball can help you deal with small fries and enemies that possess annoying projectiles. I don't know why they made its damage output so miserable though. Zero's Juuhazan is a bit slow, but it bypasses shields and one-shots almost everything that's not a boss. Crystal wall, if charged, can grant you recovery items which is a nice little utility. Zero's saber upgrade he gets from Trilobite makes a lot of the projectiles a non issue especially if you're going for a no-hit run (NECESSARY to get a AAA rating in Mantis's stage for some dumb reason). The lightning weapons paralyze most of the enemies entirely for a while leaving them open for attacks. Ice weapons can one-shot most non-humanoid enemies. It's silly however that humanoid ones are not affected beyond just the damage even though you can clearly see that ice covers them almost entirely. It almost feels like a programming oversight. Axl's blast launcher is incredibly powerful and even abuse able against regular enemies. Jump and fire it right under you (or at a small angle) at enemies and you'll notice the firing rate is considerably higher. For some dumb reason however, its damage output against bosses is pathetic. You'r'e better off using his regular weapon against Sunflower. And speaking of Sunflower, the weapon Axl gets from him is incredibly useful in general for dispatching enemies and building up combos. And of course, Zero's Ratsun... Ratsen.. Rat... screw it! The Mantis technique is not only useful in general for its power and keeping you in the air for a little longer (trust me, it's more useful than you might think at first), but it's disgustingly busted with the Sigma blade or Black Zero, let alone with all three combined.
But yes, I agree with you that reducing the number (by making half of what you get from bosses armor/utility upgrades instead of weapons for example) might help the developers design the weapons to be of much higher utility.
    2) Yeah, the tag assist makes getting caught have no consequence. I guess they made it so that you'd be more careful in case you lost your partner and thus HAD to mash out of it. Could have been implemented better though.
    3) You know, I never considered it, but yeah, having the EX meter go down 25% or so would make the player more cautious when attempting a team attack.
    4) Mate, I know how much you (and I) dislike how intrusive Alia was the last 3 games, but to say her and the other two are "needless" in this entry is just unreasonable. They're not intrusive, they don't have obnoxious voices, and they can provide you with truly helpful information, especially Palette who reveals the locations of secrets and hints on how to get to them. And if you've memorized everything after 2 or 3 playthroughs, you can get in there without a navigator.
    5) Uh, a Man-O-War is a type of jellyfish. Just google the thing. But yes, Dy-NASTY is an obnoxious beginner trap that will frustrate many new players. It gets much easier afterwards, but that's expected of any stage.
    6) Yes, the spiky blocks room in Primrose can jump down a nuclear reactor for all I care. No matter how many times I play the game, I'm never not tense over the possibility of screwing up the jump distance/height a tiny bit and run into a spike. Thankfully, there's a trick where you keep changing positions under the two center blocks and safely avoid getting crushed which is how I always get through.
    7) Maybe I'm forgetting or missing something but, how are the retry chips bad exactly? I remember many people complaining about X4 and X5 making lives meaningless by taking you back to the last checkpoint even when you get a game over. X8 punishes you for screwing up too much but not so obnoxiously like old school games. Is it because they can't be found in the stage? No really, I'd like someone to elaborate.
    8) The intermissions can be accessed on your first playthrough by dying a certain number of times in certain stages. On subsequent playthroughs, you get one after another after each death and return to HQ regardless. Yes, that's stupid. However, they feel like a harmless side activity that's also a way for grinding metals if you want so I didn't mind that much.
    9) Regarding easy mode: Aside from not letting you fight the final boss (seriously, why?), it's a good choice for those new to the game/genre and it lets you carry over the metals (but not the upgrades you've bought) to the next playthrough. So there's that I guess.
    10) Honestly, only now did I notice it. Yeah, the balancing with regards to the maximum health, sub-tanks, and regeneration IS overkill. After a number of playthroughs, I never used the sub-tanks except on the few occasions where I hit a spike (while having prickle barrier). Funny how it stared me in the face this whole time but I never saw it so clearly until now. It's ironic how the game's brutal in certain aspects your first time but too easy later on.
    11) Just don't. Love yourself. Don't bother unlock the navigators unless you're on PS2 and have max metals with the infinite metal glitch. None of them have alternate armors, therefore Alia can't charge secondary weapons. Palette can't use the copy chip of course but you should have gotten everything by then so it doesn't really matter.
    12) Am I the only one noticing this, or is it only in my imagination? X's complaint about having to fight didn't bother me giving this was my first Mega Man game, but I understand for you long time players. However, he's nowhere near the whining wimp they made him in X7 so that's a thing. And maybe it's just my interpretation but, I think Axl's comment about wiping the floor with mavericks was him indirectly telling X "Come on, man! Pull yourself together!" to which X recognizes and steels himself because as we know, although he hates violence, he hates injustice much more. Everyone in the room knew it too. Alia scolds Axl for being inconsiderate with the way he said it, but X tells her Axl is right. Maybe it was the tone of the voice acting or the way they translated things. Kinda like the "You're a big guy --> For you" scene that's become a meme.
    13) Another thing that's always been there but I never payed much attention. Yeah, the story is weak, and Lumine's "plan" doesn't make much sense. It feels like they cut some stuff which should have explained that. The reason I didn't pay it mind is because let's be honest, if we judge any of the Mega Man games with the average standards you judge a story (i.e. beyond the surface of the surface level) we'd be ripping it to shreds.
    14) I know it can be subjective and all, but am I really the only one who likes Pandamoneum's voice? What's so bad about it?
    15) I don't think it was the budget that lead to sometimes underwhelming presentation for the year of release. Not by itself at least. It's Capcom's problem of dishing out LOTS of Mega Man games in very short intervals. X7 was released July 2003, Command Mission was July 2004, and X8 was December 2004. Don't get me started on the other sub-series. This way of spreading yourself thin in such short time periods might have been a major reason why Mega Man as a whole fell out of favor for years.
    16) While I will say the aesthetic design is nothing below decent overall, I will admit the graphics (graphics =/= aesthetics) are underwhelming for the time. All I can suggest is that you play the game on PC, it's considerably better. The only reason you'd want to go with the PS2 version is the infinite metals glitch to reduce grinding because they thought it a brilliant idea to remove it!
I'll admit, I used to be overly defensive with regards to X8, partially because it's my first and one of my favorites, and partially because I found a good chunk of people judging it unfairly, even hypocritically at times by overblowing certain flows and aspects that have been in most or all previous entries among which are ones they praise endlessly. No, people who like it down't just like it because it was better than the atrocities of 6 and 7.
Well that was a long ride. Thanks for reading. Take care.

but Mega Man Zero's storyline works and because of what it did, its appreciated for it still!

    Here are some tips:
    - Axl + Giant Mechaniloid from Metal Valley = Easy metal grinding
Once you finish hitting the Mechaniloid's head and it starts to flee, shoot it with Axl's fastest weapons (His normal bullets or Sun flower's laser) to make it drop big metals. Keep your distance though, since that Mechaniloid moves faster if you are near and you'll want to grind as many metals as you can before it hides in the building at the end.
    - Even though Axl's dodge can't pass through enemies it is still useful for dodging attacks like electric beams from Vile, or lasers from Lumine, you can take advantage from it's longer invincibility frames in comparison with X's invincible dash. (It can also dodge "solid" projectiles like missiles from those weird two legged missile launchers)
    - You can free yourself from enemy grab attacks if you spam the movement buttons.
    - For Sun flower's stage Zero's spear (Naginata i think?) is incredibly useful if you have the spinning attack as you cover a massive area, you can easily pass those areas in the highest rank with no effort.
    - I dunno if it's only me who didn't notice this at my first play, but in Man O' War's stage (the jellyfish) you can dash to the sides, which made the stage noticeably easier in comparison to when I didn't know I could.
    - You can accelerate the recovery of your health bar if you attack enemies after you have switched to your second character.
I'm pretty sure I heard a different voice acting when I played this game, which I think fits better. Maybe It was another version? Perhaps they changed the voice actors in the legacy collection I dunno.
I also hate the area with the moving spikes in that robo-ant's stage, it gave me anxiety when I had only one retry chip ._.

Dithering was used in CGA graphics, 3 and 4 gen consoles (and Saturn) to simulate wider color range and transparency when combined with composite CRT output, which blended together the nearby pixels in the same line and providing the desired effects.
The effect does not work without CRT+composite, so it becomes pointless without it.

Lucas Gilbertson Zero always sounded too dude-bro for my tastes. The Japanese Zero really fit his look and character more. He was a bit more calm and collected. I absolutely cannot picture Gilbertson voicing Zero in the MMZ series especially, who is supposed to be the same character as the Zero we see in the X series, despite the art style shift.
Gilbertson was better than Johnny Yong Bosch though. And yes, the other voices were pretty ok.

Being completely honest, this might be my favorite game from the X series' second half; hell, it even surpasses X3 for me. I think a lot of it comes down to context, though. For instance, I only played through it for the first time this past weekend and a lot of the stages you liked were ones that I struggled with. Even with the bike stages sucking ass, I found that the scrolling of the Metal Valley and Inferno stages to not be as much of an issue due to the fact that: A) Inferno was my last stage, and B) Metal Valley was my grinding spot for the currency. I also didn't mind the Retry Chips since I honestly felt like I was too spoiled off the leniency of 5, 6, and 7. Being able to jump right back in meant that I never really worried about messing up, which never sat with me well. At least with 4, there was the punishment of actually playing through some of the stage again, but I feel like the hard reset of X8 works just as fine.
In terms of the grinding itself, I found that Metal Valley's giant robot is the best solution; shooting it enough times causes red metals to drop which, after spending all of your lives, can net you up to 20,000 metals if you're good enough at using Axl. I was able to go from a few hundred metals to over a hundred thousand metals in the span of an hour or so, making the RPG mechanic kind of a null point once it was time for the endgame.
Admittedly, a lot of my enjoyability of the game probably came from my usage of cheat codes, which gave me every secret AND the Ultimate Armors right off the bat. Turns out a fully-powered Nova Strike can practically one-shot most bosses on Normal difficulty; who knew? Even then, I had a lot of blunders; I'd say all of them were just lack of experience (entering the bike levels without health upgrades of any kind, doing the Troia Base without Zero's Glaive weapon, etc.) but some of the issues were sheer incompetence. I'm not one for going in blind, so I was following along with the advice from a walkthrough, so not paying attention at key points (looking at you, Inferno) killed me more times than I like to admit. In turn, my attention towards the visuals and soundtrack was basically nonexistent, but I still enjoy the little that I CAN remember from it.
As for the story... I like it (especially the part where Lumine implies that Sigma is gone permanently), plus I think I can solve your issue with the story. You wondered why Lumine wanted Sigma gone, but that can simply be boiled down to Sigma not being a new generation Reploid. Getting his help eased the plan along, but having the Hunters kill him made getting rid of Sigma a non-issue. Your problem with the 'Maverick at Will' gimmick is also trivial since it has been revealed in other content that Vile, despite being a G1 Reploid, went Maverick of his own accord and could turn it off as well. The virus was, simply put, an on/off switch inside the chips, meaning that becoming infected was simply an impossibility since they could disable it as soon as it affected them.
To reiterate, this opinion comes from playing through the game exactly once, so it's bound to change on a second playthrough. However, I can't bring myself to hate the game or even dislike it (even with the pain of the bike stages). As a fun aside that I'm surprised you didn't know about, the voice actors for the three main protagonists are all reprisals from Command Mission and the X and Zero VA's went on to play them again in Maverick Hunter X; hell, the guys who plays Signas in this game played Sigma in that game, too (and a lot of this game's cast worked together on shows like Zeta Gundam and Zoids, of all things, and worked on some other Mega Man games later on).

That section in the video about the special weapons. The more I think about it, the more I realize, "Actually I think that streamlining happened with the Mega Man Zero and Mega Man ZX games"...
In fact, the only "special weapons" you get in MMZ are the elemental chips, which add fire, ice, or lighting to your weapons. And the MMZX were more about playing as "armor sets", so to speak, that have their own characteristics.

    • @GoldenJoe
      @GoldenJoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I dunno, MMZ breaks from tradition with the chips and spear/shield, but Z2-4 give you special techniques from each boss. Z4 even goes a step further letting you take abilities from mooks. ZX/A formally breaks tradition and just gives you a bunch of armors to play with instead.

I love this game. This is everything X7 should have been. All 3/6 characters are fun to play, the levels can be an absolute joy to play (when it isn't kicking me in the dock with its MM9 levels of spike fetishizing and the TERRIBLE Avalanche Yeti stage), and I fucking love this soundtrack (in the minority, I know, but I grew up on butt rock, so this soundtrack really appeals to me in that way). Now, that said, I get why many also hate this game. The weapons that aren't for Zero are really weak, the story is utter nonsense, there's no reason grinding should be a thing in a goddamn Mega Man X game, the level design, while fun, for me, relies way too much on instant-kill hazards, Avalanche Yeti's stage is horseshit, and it's not any especially beautiful game. But I don't care, I still have fun playing this game in spite of itself, and if we ever get an X9, I hope it refines what this game does and improve on its flaws, because I think we could get something really special, should that ever be a reality.

Then I played the PC version which was great but then I remembered I had to keep reformatting my buttons which wasn't fun and finally X Legacy Collection was announced I heard X8 was included and I was like fuck it I want a physical copy. I don’t find the back tracking in x8 as terrible as it is in games like x5 since you do have the currency unlocked and knowledge of how to better blitz a level to get a high combo. It could have been done better for sure (zero/axl not being able to get capsule parts for x is nonsensical) but I think it works overall.
X8 and X3 I generally group together in my rankings since if you just focus on beating them once they’re great games, but the 100% completion and half baked ideas hurts them. They’re still way above x5-x7 which all have severe flaws.

46:30 The whole new generation maverick bit.
I've heard that this is a translation error because the ability to go insane at will is...insane. Basically, from what I've heard, this just gives the new gens the ability to choose to be evil...something that could always do. The game hints at the definition of maverick being outdated at several points with the conversations with the 8 bosses, but, like you said, it's messy story telling.

    • @marcosdheleno
      @marcosdheleno 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

i always look at it this way, a maverick is a reploid who has part of his robotics laws erased, allowing them to act, BUT at the same time, still enough of those laws left, that they conflict making them go insane.
the virus is what erases those laws, but while zero's version turns them into human killers, sigma's version erases them partially, allowing them to keep their sanity in a way.
the new generation is basically a better version of X's code, being able to swap when to follow the laws, and when not to. making them use those laws more like a guide line instead of a hard law, like the reploids did until then.

That spike room in Primrose made me hard quit back in the day! Now I've had a go through Legacy Collection 2 I've finally figured it out, but I'll take fighting Vile in that room over the spikes anyday! The way to solve it is that last bit where we see footage of the player crushed by the third block from the left, you can barely squeeze under to the fourth block to safety. Then you can go between the fourth and fifth blocks until the spikes are done moving, hope this helps anyone who got stuck like me!
Great Review RZ, I resonate with many of your points made. Still I like it, even if playing it today has this weird almost 'indie' quality to it, and Zero is awesome again - his spin attack tech plus the D-Glaive steamrolled so many things for me, super clutch. He's back to form in this game, but his hair got way thinner :(
Also X's helmet redesign is weird. I like the side vents have the X in the red bits, but don't like lack of the helmet extension to the jaw level.

You also segue your topics well, if you ever move to doing videos in multiple parts I feel you would already be suited to it while retaining your signature style of reviewing. Pretty good review, my favorite X8 review in youtube. I think one important point you don't mention about the game is the animations, more specifically the lack of stagger/pushback animations when hit. I always felt that made the game feel kinda floaty and made brainless attacking during the invulnerability period a bit more reliable than in some other X titles.
While I don't enjoy playing X8 nearly as much as the best titles from the series (not a bad game but just not as enjoyable to replay) I think it's the best title at fulfilling the fantasy of being a Maverick Hunter so to speak, not only making the hunters act as a team in game but also making their HQ feel more alive than ever. Not really what I look for in a game but still liked the idea oof trying to flesh out this aspect more than before and I think it would be welcome doing it again but with better writing quality and visual presentation in a future X title.

Here's a better grinding spot for Metals: Go to the Earthrock Trilobyte stage, get chased by the robot all the way up, but instead of fighting him, just start shooting him as Axl! Every eighth shot will make the giant robot drop a red metal. Keep doing this over and over and you will find, that your metal count is rising pretty darn fast! This is way more consistent than that of the intermissions, where your metal gain is only as good as your combo.

  • @marnea1

Good stuff, my man. Good stuff.
But yeah, your thoughts of X8 are pretty much my own. They did some interesting things, and it's a decent game all things considered. But it's just not has good as the series' best entries. Of course, after the festering shit storm that was X7, it was damn refreshing and gave me hope for X9. Too bad that never materialized. I do give this game a lot of props though for actually making Axel distinct and fun in his own right. Too bad his transforming abilities still leave a lot to be desired. Of course, that's where Mega Man ZX Advent comes in. Being able to transform into any of the the eight mavericks you defeated, whenever you wish, was just so fucking sick. Makes me wish Axel could do that in X8.
Speaking of which, do you have any plans of moving on to the Mega Man Zero and ZX sequel series?
Because I am a huge fan of the X series. And in my mind Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent are damn solid, I'd probably place them right up there with X4 and X2 if you put a gun to my head. A bit behind them perhaps, but not too far. They're level design isn't has strong but that's because they went more for an open world Castlevania style game. Of course, that's why it's also so hard for me to compare them directly, it's a bit of a departure. But they still keep the core gameplay, and it's just as tight as ever. I think you'd really dig them.

I've beaten the game several times on HARD mode.

This game is definitely a 4/5.
Once you master Central White and learn how to beat Gigabolt Manowar, the rest of the game is a cinch.
The item game demands multiple replays as the items are priced so high you can't afford everything no matter how hard you grind. Even with the metal generator and the metal discount, things are too expensive.
I've gotten so good at the game, I could easily produce a playthrough video if I wanted.

I noticed for sure that everything seemed more... to the point in the video. My favorite review of yours is X6 for the exact reason that you tore everything about the game to shreds (I really hate X6 so it felt good), but having it for every review wouldn't be good for the long run. It'd run the risk of making you seem too nitpicky. Besides, you still had a lot to say about X8, so videos being like this is fine with me!
I'm a big fan of X8, myself, but I totally admit that it's not for everyone. A lot of things I love about it aren't things I can imagine others liking. Still really enjoyed the video and, as far as I'm concerned, it was well worth the wait!

Although the mavericks aren't the coolest (Im looking at you Optic Sunflower) they still make sense and were more than decent. The different armors and navigator additions are very nice. Lumine being the final final boss was also a nice change. Overall I like to give it a 8/10

Honestly; I'm a little let-down by this review, RZ. It's not because I disagree with any of the points that you made, but because of some of the stuff you're doing. For the sake of keeping things short:
    1. Too many in-jokes: It's fine to do a couple here and there as quick remarks or nods, but put in too many or make them drag on for too long and the video starts to feel clique-ish. It's very easy for these types of joke to become annoying to people who aren't in on them, which for me was definitely the case.
    2. Crass humour: I'm not saying you can't make this type of joke, but know that it's very easy to put people off from watching your videos when you're going for this type of humour. I feel like you made a couple of these jokes, but seriously, the one at 39:45 was just childish and in poor taste. Come on, man. You're better than that.
    3. Consulting other people's material: Most critics, not just in video games, go out of their way not to read other people's reviews or talk to other reviewers before writing their own reviews so they can provide their legitimate opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I got the impression that you mentioned someone else's review on this? I'm not saying you can't do that, but we're here to hear about your take on this game, and you exposing yourself to other people's work is only gonna make yours less unique (e.g. you end up talking about the same topics with similar takes etc) as opposed to us just hearing your thoughts the way you independently chose to structure them.
... Also, I didn't see any sigma blade/ultimate armor/white axl/black zero footage. Did you not get that far into the game? I feel like that's when I had the most fun with it. If the grind's not killed your interest in the game yet I'd recommend you try those out. :p
Anyway, just throwing in my two cents. I hope you're able to take what I said as criticism that you can use to make your channel bigger, and not take it personally. Best of luck!

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      1. I can see how the in-jokes can become annoying to people who don't know what they're about. I'll keep that one in mind. Part of the reason I do it quite often is because I share a lot of followers with the people I made in-jokes about. Still, I get this point and will keep it in mind for sure.
      2. Can understand this one, as well, but don't feel bad about it. That part you timestamped specifically is because the comments section for X6 was so far filled with people who kept ignoring my points and calling me names that I had to bring up how stupid the whole argument is. I agree it was a cheeky moment, but I'm not the person to be cheeky/mean unless there's a reason. People who aren't called out shouldn't feel called out, either; if somebody likes X6 I can totally respect that, and I've stated this many times before. I also use this kind of humor rather sparingly.
      3. I've done this since the beginning of time, referencing other people's reviews. J and I are also friends and we share like 80% of our subscribers, I think, so that's why I kept mentioning J specifically. It's a sort of rivalry thing that many people seem to enjoy between us. But rest safe in the knowledge that everything you hear in these videos are and have always been my honest thoughts. I am not influenced by the thoughts of others when I review games. Not for X8, not for anything before it. Perhaps subconsciously, but that shouldn't be a drastic factor.
And no, I got none of that shit because I really don't like grinding/farming in games, lol. It also doesn't really make a difference for the overall quality of the game, I think, so I didn't feel it was necessary to unlock/talk about. Anyway, thanks for the feedback; I'll keep it in mind for the future! Hopefully you enjoyed the video despite your gripes. :)

I could never stand how the characters were proportioned in this game. Their legs are just so long compared to their torsos. I feel like X7, while a graphical disaster in some other respects, had much nicer looking character models for X, Zero, and Axl overall.
Overall not a fan of X8 though. I'm firmly in the camp that 1-4 are varying degrees of great, but none of them are perfect. 5 has a solid base but a lot of obnoxious crap, 6 is a pain in the ass that oddly gets better the better you get at it, 7 is a bizarrely fascinating disaster, and 8 is honestly a lot like 6 to me. It has a lot of good ideas, but it's overly gimmicky, and the level design is just absolutely mean at times. I'd say it's on par with 6 in the sense that it's a bad game that gets better the more familiar you are with it, but 6 didn't force you into annoying spawn rooms where you have to kill all the enemies to proceed.

X8 to me is the definition of "style over substance" and I never liked this game all that much because of it. I mean, it's better than X6 and X7, but that's not really much of a compliment since those two are awful, the repetitive nature of X8's gimmicks and level structures made it more annoying to play through with each revisit, rather than getting better and better. This is one of the few Megaman X games in which I don't even bother going after all armor pieces because it's too much of a hassle and I certainly don't want to revisit stages that were already shit from the get-go just to pick up an armor piece because last time around I didn't have X in my team. No, I'll just get the pieces I feel I need and move on, thanks.
This game does a decent job at creating the illusion that it has a lot of depth at first, but that illusion did not maintain itself from beginning to end.

  • @nahnah390
    @nahnah390 5 ปีที่แล้ว

For some reason my favorite detail/bonus is the ultimate armor for each character. Since you have to do something different to unlock it for each one, with Axl's being really interesting from a story perspective, especially since he seems to grow from the change rather than go crazy. That and if you have Vile's fight be on the ride armor stage, you can hit him with karmic vengeance.
I really wish there was a modding scene for this game, because the teleportation checkpoints (As well as letting you have all three characters come with you instead, but that'd mess up the final level's design a bit so it'd be better suited for a sequel) would be great additions. Not sure how the story would go from here though, unless you wanted to just dump all over the 'we're serious this time, sigma's run out of spare bodies to run to' aspect of the ending. Or maybe just have mavericks fighting each other over becoming a new icon like sigma. I dunno.

  • @yuurou7927
    @yuurou7927 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I love this game so much, so I think I mostly deciphered the shenanigans in this game.
I'll give you my notes if you want to read:
1, Axl's roll do have invincibility frames, only against projectiles. Including VAVA electric wall and Lumine feathers. Axl's grenade launcher can break shields in one hit, very effective against copy sigmas and Lumine last form 30sec timer.
2, To reach the last rare metal in Boost forest, the intended way is bring the ride armor to the elevator and ride it back, fall down to crush the floor then ride with the armor in the elevator to get it.(No in game hint on this except when you walk on it you can hear a hollow sound) The best way to get it is use Zero's knuckles, perform a Raikousen at the floor edge, the floor can be break by it.(No hint either, I still don't know it's a glitch or not, but the XLC version still has it so probably not a glitch?)
3, VAVA will be in the trap room every three stages, he'll come 4 times in total, the last encounter always will be in Noah's Park, with dialoges.
4, The intermissions unlock when you get "Mission failed" consecutively, how many times is determind by your progress, the best point is beat 7 mavericks and just die on purpose then return to lab. However the Trio base Boss rush is only avalible on new game plus.
5, You can just Raikousen to the rare metal in Central white, very easy to do. In fact you can Raikousen to a lot of places.
6, About the plot, the point is Lumine is actually using Sigma to do his plan, and trying to get the maverick hunters and sigma to fight, then he can come in for the profit. Sadly the marverick hunters are too powerful for this plan, so he failed. The new generations are not effected by virus at all, they're turning maverick with their own will. They're not malfunctioning, so they're criminals, rather than mavericks. It's a great starting point for bluring the line between robots and human, not developed enough though.
7, Farming metals is a chore, to make it easier, get the metal generator, then go in Noah's Park, use something like a clip or weight to keep your character go left. Then you just go to sleep, wake up, now you have all the metal you need. You can do the Metal Valley run and get about 5000 every 2-3 minutes but it's tedious grinding.
That's about it? Reply me if anyone needs any information on X8, I'll try to answer.

Good video. Also, @39:45, who were you mocking? Was there people giving you a rough time?

For two years now, I get comments on my X6 review that I suck and need to get good, that the game was supposed to be hard. It was simply a callout about how weird that argument is when the bosses in X6 are incredibly broken/easy.

What did you do with my childhood love? I remember finishing it like 10 times just to get that S rank everywhere and the 100% on my save file. Too bad it was deleted by my cousins years ago, the only game in which I put so much effort. But hey, despite all of it's faults, this game still has a place on my heart. Nice review.
