  • Sonic Origins recently came out and packages four widescreen remasters of the Hedgehog's 16-bit roots. This should be the definitive way to play each of the included games -- keyword being ''should''. Let me explain why I am not buying the collection. #sega #sonicthehedgehog #critique

If you're on PC or a hacked Switch, and looking for the best versions of these games to get, this may interest you:
A decent number of comments have mentioned there are more fleshed out versions of the decompilations available: Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic CD Restored. Apparently, they are similarly customizable to Sonic 3: A.I.R., which sounds great. I wasn't really aware of these options when I made the video, but I thank you all for letting me know about it, so I can pin this comment!
Also, because I keep reading this: no, these versions by themselves are not IP theft. They are tools that do not hold the game code or assets; said code and assets have to be injected. How the individual goes about acquiring the original games can be illegal, but I'd bought them all directly from Sega when that was still possible. Just wanted to throw that out there; these are not fan games that actually contain copyrighted material within. Case in point: Nintendo tried taking down the Super Mario 64 decompilation, but was only able to do so for ports that came pre-packaged with the game's assets. It's why an Ocarina of Time decompilation has also been developed, and why Nintendo hasn't been able to do much against it.

14:09 Just to clarify something in this part, the versions of Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base used in Origins weren’t actually made for this collection. Rather, there is heavy speculation that the versions used in Origins were actually archived recordings of _even earlier_ renditions of the tracks that Jun had on hand. This is due to elements of the tracks being even further unrefined (ex: mistakes in note data) from both the PC Collection midis, and the 1103 Prototype. Not to mention how the Competition Menu theme, the S3A credits track, and the unused Super Sonic theme (repurposed for the new Blue Spheres mode) all sound IDENTICAL to the 1103 prototype, which all leads to the conclusion that the only track Jun actually had a full hand in doing was the new Super Sonic theme. And that’s it.

The reason the drop dash feels off in Sonic 1 and 2 is because of a feature called roll-locking. In the original versions of the games, if you jumped out of a roll, Sonic would behave differently than if you jumped from a run or standing. When jumping out of a roll, Sonic's directional input is locked, so you can't influence his movement jumping out of a roll. This was not in Mania specifically because of the drop dash and the Mobile version of Sonic CD as well as this new retro engine version of 3K don't have roll locking either.
Not sure why it was left in 1 and 2? Probably due to the aforementioned fact of origins obviously having been rushed.

Something else to mention is lack of choice. Rather than fluent options, you get "Play Anniversary or Classic"
We've already had more fluent options with Mania and with past re-releases, so why is Origins (the supposed definitive versions of these games that they _removed_ other versions for) so set in stone?
What if I want to play in widescreen but with lives? Or the classic 4:3 resolution, but with new moves, or for coins? Why is screen resolution tied to game mode? Why not offer the customisable moveset that Mania and the Switch ports of 1 and 2 offered?
Might seem picky, but with games like this that have already been released so many times (with more choice!) it's these features and options that make or break this kind of collection, and Origins absolutely falls short

    • @chrishd659
      @chrishd659 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The thing that bothers me the most about Sonic 3's music isn't the fact that the songs are replaced, it's the fact that these great-sounding prototype tracks sound awful and it makes people who like the originals hate them even more. But in the right hands, like you were saying, the tracks could have sounded great. Bouncy and Mastered Realm are perfect examples of Sonic Fans that are very competent enough to "remaster" these prototype tracks more than official Sonic employees. This video says almost everything I ever wanted to say about Origins. Thank you.
And here's one more thing for the road.
I think Sega is quite aware of the fan efforts to remaster these games, and one thing I do appreciate about Origins is that it is recognizing that slapping them with takedowns is not the solution.
They view the fan efforts as competition, as it should be.
Hence all this extra content like Mission Mode and the Musuem and the animated cutscenes; that is unique content that only Sega could provide at such a high quality (in ideal circumstances). In a way, I applaud that.
But speaking for me, personally, I would much rather all of these extras and enhancements weren't there, and that all the effort spent on them went to delivering a better game. And the same goes to Colors Ultimate. I didn't ask for extra Wisps to be shoehorned into the level design, I asked for a great way to experience Colors on modern consoles and on PC. I didn't get that.
Maybe I'm too naive, but I think this collection would have sold just fine without all of these extras just on the fact that you press a few buttons and it's available immediately. That's a real advantage this would have that AIR and the decompliations especially can't quite obtain.
And considering the fact that the extras they put all this importance on suffer from the same lack of attention given to the games themselves, kinda just proves my point. What's the point of adding these extras when you can't put in the time and effort to make them good? And what's the point if the thing they're being adding to also can't get the necessary time and effort to be made good?
    Sometimes, less is more.

One of the most dissapointing stuffs is the lack of options (like having the Anniversary Mode/Mirror Anniversary with limited lives) or illogic decisions like NOT allowing to play as Knuckles or Knuckles+Tails in Sonic 2 in "classic" mode WITHOUT the stage select cheat code (in the case of Knuckles+Tails it has sense is NOT allowed without the cheat) and Sonic+Tails in Sonic 1 regardless of Anniversary or Classic Mode... which in Classic Mode ALSO has sense for obvious reasons, logically, the PC version can fix some of those issues regardless if Sega bothers to do so or not... but is ALSO a shame that the PC version uses Denuvo.

This collection at the end reminds me a lot of 3D All Stars, it does have more effort put into it than the latter (which had none basically) thanks to the animations and the new port of 3K, but other than that they have the same 2 fatal flaws, they are way too expensive for what they offer, in the case of Sonic being next to the price the mobile versions have always had, and while they are a fine way to play them on consoles on a legal way, there are better options on PC that are not very difficult at all to set up.

And while there are those who do enjoy this package simply because there's an option to play these games, I honestly cannot see the benefit nor the incentive to wanna support this, mainly on the subject of its pricing.
An example I will use are Capcom's MegaMan Legacy Collections (Of which, we have "3" out "4", but actually 5 and 7 since 3 collections are split into 2), in which case, yes, they have varying problems that make them off-putting experiences for numerous reasons (Outside of Zero/ZX IMO)...but, they don't actively cost too much or ask you to pay for ridiculous DLC just to have basic features that exist to nickel and dime folks out of their money. And even then, in Sega's situation, their track record with anything Sonic-related also doesn't give one much hope in thinking that something won't be wrong with whatever they put out given that Colors was ultimately (Unintentional...) botched and shames that game's outlook. At this point, we have people asking for them to release collections of the DIMPs era titles, but do we really want them knowing that they're likely to be mediocre recreations that fans might've already enhanced?

All while being able to mix and match settings to your heart's desire, making it like Sonic 3 A.I.R before that was a thing.
Also, along with Knuckles' absence in CD, where is he in the Classic mode of Sonic 2? The mode that boasts about being like playing on a Mega Drive. Its almost as Lock-On technology wasn't a thing back in 1994.
While I would say an Advance widescreen collection would have been better - as when where those games actually given a proper re-release in the one bundle? - but given the shoddy build quality of Origins, I can only wonder the state they'd be in, leaving it again to fans to do what Sega don't and fix their games for them.
History doesn't repeat itself, Sega does.
Also the mention of new characters in the trailers is blatant false advertising, because there are no new characters in the Origin collection. Amy and Metal would have been nice additions, Amy especially given how much screen time she gets in the cutscenes.

They SHOULD had allowed those 2 things WITHOUT the need of a cheat code to begin with (I can understand the Sonic 3 barriers in Sonic 1 and 2 since those can break the game balance, but also it blows my mind that Knuckles in CD is not a thing and Amy still excluded despite being featured in the Origins ending video with an active role at Knuckles side... which you can see once you beat all 4 games or the story mode).

You forgot to mention that there's NO online play for Origins whether if it's a Console or P.C, what if I wanted to play against someone across the world or with my friends that are far away, Sega didn't care to do something about it so now you'll have to go back to the 1990's and try to bring your friends over. Heck, even Steam's Remote Play isn't available from the start so P.C Players are screwed the same way with either huddling around a Computer Monitor or laptop in hoping that one has a controller and that your computer has a Bluetooth Connection "hoping that it supports more than one connection" or more USB Plugs "despite that wires aren't that long" since Steam supports Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers or else Multiplayer won't be the best option on P.C at all. Although you can use Parsec but that's just asking to show more of your P.C than go straight to the game.

I am tempted to cut Sega some slack just because they don't have the same freedoms fans have. Like you can include every track for every game when licensing isn't an issue, and you can offer a ton of customization when time isn't a concern. And fans aren't paying people on the same level to add widescreen and crt soft and sharp pixels for four different games, program an emulator to run the original roms, create new menus, etc. Sonic CD is huge and very vertical and Knuckles would need to be able to climb every surface. It's a lot. I mean how much did the animation alone cost? Still, Sega needs to deliver a quality product, and compared with other compilations, they are struggling to do that.

Forcing people to buy this overpriced piece of crap. 5th and the final reason is what stealth said, if your developers aren’t satisfied with the work they done why would I be? You should snag TSR if it's cheap, it's no replacement for its predecessor (which is a bit unfair because Transformed is literally the best kart racer ever made) but it gets a bad rap because much like people not knowing how to trick in Transformed, the way in which you're supposed to play TSR is not obvious. But if you think about the team mechanics hard enough and recognise the paramount importance of rings, it'll fall into place. A well put together opinions video. It strongly contrasts with my experience with the game as I've barely had any issues with it on the Series X. Though seeing how fans did a better job already, I can see where the frustrations are coming from. Though this is my first time playing the games with the Retro engine and improvements they got really help give the game a better quality of life polish. The price doesn't bother me too much though I would've loved it if the anniversary mode had remixed tracks for all of the stages and a way to select a custom track to listen to. Although I will completely agree that the "classics" mode was very poorly done and makes me think "What was the point of this if it's not the actual classics?". Though I think I've been having a better time with it simply because before getting this game I got Mario Strikers Battle League and have been completely underwhelmed with the title and actually see more value in Origins because of it. I know that's a pretty sad comparison but I have also enjoyed my time playing Origins and have very rarely come across any glitches. Hopefully this game gets some great patches in the future.

I feel it is WAY past time copyright law got a MASSIVE overhaul, allowing games like Sonic 3, Gran Turismo 1 and whatever else you can think of, as well as TV shows like Muppet Babies, WKRP and The Great Space Coaster, to be rereleased more easily. It should be able to take you MUCH less negotiation with the original artists to reuse their music, and/or just pay the artist for every sale/stream/rerun of your game or show! Sonic 3 and Muppet Babies are both highly celebrated pieces of media and had The Great Space Coaster been made more readily available, Family Guy fans like me would’ve more easily been able to see what that cutaway from I Take Thee, Quagmire is a parody of! Furthermore, rereleasing Sonic 3 without its original soundtrack is like rereleasing ANY OTHER Sonic game without its original soundtrack! Sega clearly haven’t been themselves for YEARS. Even after the disputes between Sega of Japan and America, they still continued to be themselves somewhat, but shortly into the 2010s, they just shat the bed and started to not do so much!
If I were made Sega’s new boss next week, I would:
    - have Sonic Origins patched to eliminate all these bugs and restore Sonic 3’s original soundtrack (or at least look into offering the latter as paid DLC)
    - work on getting more older games rereleased, and not just from the Mega Drive era!
    - enter discussions with Blaze for possible Sega carts for the Evercade
    - start announcing new games not based on existing IP
    - just get better as a company overall

Well said, Sonic Origins is an embarrassment to the Sonic Franchise. The Collection was already a disappointment, but there are THREE major factors that make this a dealbreaker to me:
First up is the Michael Jackson music for Sonic 3, it is all absent, even the music for Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base. The replacement music just sounds really, really bad! (It's like nails on a chalkboard)
The Second factor is the lives system has been replaced with coins in the Widescreen Modes, which removes all the challenge from these games, the coins just make all of this TOO EASY!!
The Third One is Denuvo on PC, which can make the entire collection UNPLAYABLE!!!
Between the absence of the Michael Jackson music, the fact that you can't get Game Overs in Widescreen Mode, Denuvo, and all the other problems with this collection, it's just a mess. SEGA does not deserve to be in charge of the Sonic Franchise anymore!
    Sonic 1 Forever
    Sonic 2 Absolute
Sonic 3 A.I.R. (With all the MJ music along with a couple of tracks from the past Sonic games)
    Sonic CD Restored & Knuckles
Are still the definitive ways to play these titles.
And why pay 40 bucks for this collection, when you can get the Sonic Mega Collection + and Sonic Gems Collection and not only get better versions of the games in Sonic Origins, but also get even more games? Granted you would have to get older video game consoles, but right now Sonic Origins certainly is not worth 40 dollars.
Might get this on Nintendo Switch, but only on a DEEP discount. But seriously, SEGA should just give up and sell the Sonic Franchise to someone who is willing to take better care of it.

First off, not having Michael Jackson tracks is an unfair complaint due that's out of Sega's control. Michael Jackson tracks is the copyright situation Sega has to begin with not re-releasing Sonic 3 for years. Sega has to pay royalties to MJ estate to use these tracks. Also, the prototype tracks are really great. Second off, As good as Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems Collection are, they're basically Genesis(In Sonic CD's case, PC) ROMs of these games rather than the superior Christian Whitehead and Stealth Retro Engine versions of these games.

Anisotropic filtering is a technique that makes distant objects look sharper (and by extension, nicer).
Sharp scaling isn't necessarily better, just that Retropolis Zone (and many others) want their pixels sharp.

Sales are indeed the language they speak.
Hence why this good boy stayed far away from Colors Ultimate and Origins, and made sure to buy Frontiers at full price. I hope enough people did and will do the same - I _need_ them to get the message, now that there's hope again.

My only BIG gripe with Origins is the pricing, and that's one thing everyone can agree on the pricing sucks. If it was $20 like Mania and $4.99 for the DLC, we clearly wouldn't have this problem. Thanks EA.
I'm not even mad or disappointed that the MJ music didn't make it into Sonic 3 (Maybe except Ice Cap, but still.) What I AM disappointed over, however, is that they made the prototype soundtracks sound bad *AGAIN* by taking the tracks from an earlier prototype instead of taking it from the beta we know like normal sane people. I much prefer the more original take Beta CNZ had over the stereotypical mess that was the final version, but they ruined it in Origins. The new Super theme isn't bad, it just doesn't fit with the rest of the game.
I am still proud of the visual changes made to Sonic 3, like Big Arms returning for Sonic and Tails, and the Launch Base transition to Mushroom Hill, which makes me wish A.I.R. had that. It probably will have that in a future update, who knows?
The glitches can't be ignored either. Fortunately nothing too broken except the AI Tails respawn glitch which doesn't crash the game, but still.
And the confirmation on where Sonic CD takes place in the timeline. The only reason I would have any reason to believe this prior is that the levels in Sonic CD are enhanced versions of the levels from Sonic 1. Maybe also Amy always being the Minnie Mouse to Sonic's Mickey Mouse. (Which was one of Sonic's inspirations.)

There shouldn't be any DLC period, it's a collection of 20+ year-old games, let alone day 1

what strikes me is that they made a new super theme for 3+K instead of using the beta unused song which I think fits really well as a super theme (and doesn't use the awful instruments that Jun Senoue loves to use for "retro" songs)
