I am happy to say that I was there. Even though I wasn't even properly in the fandom, just watching the show when it came on, it was still a CRAZY time, and I remember staring at the TV in anticipation, properly freaking out. Green shadows were so eerie in both situations I SWEAR! The frustration I felt when watching Mayor Dewey of all people at a time like that was SO real, though that moment when he explained that he was trying to protect the town did make it a little better. The backstory of the Stans was something my father also partially witnessed and made him a genuine fan of the the show, which I totally made sure to extend upon. What a time to be alive and paying attention!! You just.. HAD to be there!
Gravity Falls was one of my favorite shows growing up. It started in 2012, right? I can't believe it has been 12 years since it's first episode. I feel old.
I remember seeing spoilers from not what he seems and immediately rushing to every latino fandub site i knew of to see if thet had the episode. Shoutout to hardsubs cafe and others for keeping latino cartoon fans alive back then
Yo, shoutout to Vailskibum for being my go-to youtuber for Gravity Falls theories back in the day, i remember him being the one that put me onto the "stan has a twin" theory, and even him being the one who put me onto FnaF because of the "soos and the real girl" episode
9:29 this scene is permanently burned into my brain. Because I thought the implication was that Stan died a long time ago and someone else is wearing him like a skinsuit or something. I even thought the chin shadow was like a second mouth. I immediately switched the channels because it was too freaky
Looking back, the pairs of twins reflect and contrast each other really well in that episode: Just like Mason wanted to turn off the portal because he didn't trust Stanley, Ford told Stan to leave the portal alone, because it was too dangerous and risky to turn it back on. Those twins show love by being safe in their actions, and thinking logically. Stan and Mabel, however, would take as many risks as possible to save their loved ones, no matter how dangerous their circumstances are: Stan does not turn off the portal so he can save Ford, Mabel doesn't press the button because she trusts Stan. Both sets of twins think they know better than the other.
I didn't get into SU until 2017 when the latest episode we had was the zoo steven bomb, but I perfectly remember watching Not What He Seems because my cousin had an asthma attack from the absolute shock our little 10 year old brains received that day
i haven’t heard your voice in a while, not really since steven universe future ended and soon after i fell off the youtube cartoon space but this popped right into my recommended. good to be back
I was so glad I got into both of these shows when they were like, 5 episodes out… what a TIME TO BE ALIVE!!!! And I called BOTH THEORIES way early AND yeah…. Everyone called me crazy hahaha
4:30 I got chills remembering that episode, even that time!! Watching it for the first time on Disney XD on our big living room TV.Then running to my room to tune into adult swim for the evening, man, simpler times.
I remember watching Not What He Seems on vacation on my 3DS with the worst internet connection ever and absolutely screaming at the reveal! it’s a core memory. all I wanted to do for the rest of the week was go home and watch the episode again on my computer it was SO GOOD
I love how this came out, and just the other day, I was listening to all my favorite steven universe songs. I got stuck on "isn't it over" and played that shit on repeat until like 2 days ago
The only other time I can recall something similar to this happening was OK K.O.'s season 1 finale, "You're In Control" premiering on April 6th, 2018, and the last two episodes of Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil's third season, "Divide" and "Conquer", airing A DAY LATER.
I'm actually educating myself on the OK:KO lore for once after years of getting pictures of Turbo and Venemous out of context, and from what you're saying? I 100% understand why he put that Butterfly Star vs Monster Meteora clip in the intro. That sounds like a MOMENT for fans, although definitely not as big as this week, esp because both Star and KO weren't as big and didn't have much of a lasting impact from what ive seen.
@@mesousagaby740 oh, I agree from a personal standpoint. I just means that the mainstream cartoon fans talk about Gravity Falls as Peak and Steven Universe as black and white while their neighbors get mostly forgotten. Star VS was an entertaining, interesting, and engaging show until season 4, in my opinion. It wasn't for everyone, and let's be honest here, neither was GF. It's really unfortunate that people only remember the bad and mid with SV, because there were some moments that clearly understood the meaning of hype.
@@mesousagaby740 also, I see your Hekapoo pfp, and I agree with you. I think she should've been a main antagonist in season 4, but thats just me. She's a cool character! And I bet you could draw her in a slightly different art style and no one would guess she was from Star VS. Has anyone pointed out your pfp yet?
@@ivyinkwell1754 Her being an antagonist is not a bad idea...but I honestly prefer her having a redemption arc, and you can see that in my fanfic titled Hekapoo Vs. The Legion Of Affliction on AO3.
i miss when i was younger and was watching these shows as they came out. i remember getting so so hyped when the garnet is a fusion theory was confirmed. jailbreak is still one of, if not my, absolute favorite episodes in animated television. i was a young kid (in like fifth-ish grade) who was trying to figure out their identity, in a world that wasn’t accepting of it. seeing an openly gay character/relationship brought so much solace to young me, and it was the only reason i was able to be comfortable exploring my identity come middle school. i owe that episode so much, and i think i can still quote it word for word to this day
I can certainly sympathize with wanting to make an animated show that could reach the heights of amazing shows like Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, ATLA, Owl House, and more. That's my biggest dream, to turn my stories into an animated show. But I'll settle for making it into a webcomic instead. Just something visual so I can show all the weirdness and wonder without having to torture myself trying to describe what's perfectly rendered in my head.
11:33 spoilers below if you haven't finished Gravity Falls it also stops him from stopping a cataclysmic event and Stan knew the portal was dangerous. The Trade off was - saved Brother for Weirdmageddon The portal is really the focus of the entire second season, not just that episode.
little fun fact, i'm french and you see that scene where we see garnet get stabilized ? that chilling instant where we see her "die" well it was cut in the french version, same for a ton of scenes of SU and other cartoon network shows
i didnt have cable at the time when i found out about these shows and it was due to youtube channels like yours that peaked my interest and got me to give them a shot. it didnt take long to get hooked on not only the stories they were telling, the characters but also the mysteries they held and the fans theories around them. at first i though steven universe was villain/moral of the week based cartoon and while that kind of was the case at first it goes well beyond that not long after and im glad it did.
I will forever miss being able to watch Gravity Falls and Steven Universe as they aired. Gravity Falls I was a little closer to because I remember watching episode One when it aired. The build up to every episode and the fan theorizing was so exciting for me and it's just not anything that can be replicated in a streaming/binging setting. Don't get me wrong I love to sit and binge a good show but sometimes the scheduled airing format just makes a show a little bit better.
I will never forget seeing Not What He Seems then a couple days after that I saw a meme on Tumblr regarding the Stan twin theory and the Garnet fusion theory both getting confirmed in the same week and that meme got Steven Universe on my radar to begin watching it about a month later.
Sometimes I wish I could have grown up the times the episodes were individually airing apart from each other instead off all at once, that must have been an amazing feeling to follow the series, watching every episode week by week or month by month for years until the finale.
The Steven Bomb that introduced Yellow Diamond was the first set of episodes I fully watched and I absolutely fell in love after being put off by the First Episode Premiere where I heard "Cookie Cat" and went nope 😂
I think cringe is deliberate. That's the only explanation for why it's so pervasive in "exists only in-universe" products. Or Sugar was just making fun of all the rap ads from the 90s.
Yeah, we'll always miss those days... But it's a good thing that things in the present can still be enjoyable too even if we don't find them _as_ good as the old stuff was.
Roundtable. Man, thank you for this hell of a video. As a kid I enjoyed both the mystery and lore, watching each episode as in my opinion the episodes were there for reasons, to show the connection growing and to uncover more and more about the story and what the world brings. This is just how I was as a kid and even now I would rather see a series and never truly finish it subconsciously if they did it well enough cause I never want something that good to end.

41:21 fuck man, I almost cried at this part. That shit hit me so hard.
I didn't get into SU until 2017 when the latest episode we had was the zoo steven bomb, but I perfectly remember watching Not What He Seems because my cousin had an asthma attack from the absolute shock our little 10 year old brains received that day
i haven’t heard your voice in a while, not really since steven universe future ended and soon after i fell off the youtube cartoon space but this popped right into my recommended. good to be back
GF and SU are peak Cartoons. ❤
@@ivyinkwell1754 Well, they've done an impact to me in the last few years after properly rewatching them.
That Week, helped fundamentally built me as a person, In ways i could never describe.
i miss when i was younger and was watching these shows as they came out. i remember getting so so hyped when the garnet is a fusion theory was confirmed. jailbreak is still one of, if not my, absolute favorite episodes in animated television. i was a young kid (in like fifth-ish grade) who was trying to figure out their identity, in a world that wasn’t accepting of it. seeing an openly gay character/relationship brought so much solace to young me, and it was the only reason i was able to be comfortable exploring my identity come middle school. i owe that episode so much, and i think i can still quote it word for word to this day
I can certainly sympathize with wanting to make an animated show that could reach the heights of amazing shows like Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, ATLA, Owl House, and more. That's my biggest dream, to turn my stories into an animated show. But I'll settle for making it into a webcomic instead. Just something visual so I can show all the weirdness and wonder without having to torture myself trying to describe what's perfectly rendered in my head.
Stronger than you was my introduction to SU. The bop that the song is as well as the general hype over garnets reveal is what got me to check it out.
11:33 spoilers below if you haven't finished Gravity Falls
it also stops him from stopping a cataclysmic event and Stan knew the portal was dangerous. The Trade off was - saved Brother for Weirdmageddon
The portal is really the focus of the entire second season, not just that episode.
little fun fact, i'm french and you see that scene where we see garnet get stabilized ? that chilling instant where we see her "die" well it was cut in the french version, same for a ton of scenes of SU and other cartoon network shows
i didnt have cable at the time when i found out about these shows and it was due to youtube channels like yours that peaked my interest and got me to give them a shot. it didnt take long to get hooked on not only the stories they were telling, the characters but also the mysteries they held and the fans theories around them. at first i though steven universe was villain/moral of the week based cartoon and while that kind of was the case at first it goes well beyond that not long after and im glad it did.
The hype around Not What He Seems was insane, and I cant believe it came out at the same time as The Return and Jailbreak
34:35 the way this hit my soul 😞
I was 19 when Not What He Seems aired.
Damn. I think I was 13 at the time.
I absolutely think you should make a Pearl video if you haven't, I'm obsessed with her arc and it's just so interesting to me
Man i appreciate you uploading videos every day keep it up
Sometimes I wish I could have grown up the times the episodes were individually airing apart from each other instead off all at once, that must have been an amazing feeling to follow the series, watching every episode week by week or month by month for years until the finale.
Nine Years….
So much has changed in just nine short years. We were all so much younger then
The Steven Bomb that introduced Yellow Diamond was the first set of episodes I fully watched and I absolutely fell in love after being put off by the First Episode Premiere where I heard "Cookie Cat" and went nope 😂
I think cringe is deliberate. That's the only explanation for why it's so pervasive in "exists only in-universe" products. Or Sugar was just making fun of all the rap ads from the 90s.
I loved to watch the old days of 2010's cartoons. ❤😢 Missed the old days.
The 2010s may SEEM retro, but they're still fairly recent.
Yeah, we'll always miss those days... But it's a good thing that things in the present can still be enjoyable too even if we don't find them _as_ good as the old stuff was.
man, cartoons were so so much better back then. I miss them.
I miss 2010s cartoons but I don't miss living in the 2010s because life in 10s just kinda sucked for me
Love your videos man, keep up the great work!! 💕🙌
28:20 "The introduction offfff...."
Mommy jasper! I mean.
I just wanna tell you, your a very good TH-camr and you just gained a subscriber. Dude you’re so informal it’s amazing, you know your shit and you’re just flat out a good dude. Thank you
0:35 NO. WE ARE NOT.
I just rewatched all of Steven recently and realized the episode Rose’s scabbard is also the first time Pearl does her 🙊(because of🌺). All the way back then!
Man I miss having cartoons like these to watch. It’s almost like the job of storytelling is going to the internet while television sticks to episodic formulas. I want something that’s so good it tortures me by needing to wait a week to watch another episode (Like Fionna and Cake, can’t wait for season 2).
Ah yes. One of the best times during my highschool years. I remember being at home watching this and it was amazing~
14:57 I like how he respected all the theories
i had to hop on my phone to comment but the wave of goosebumps/full body chills when hearing the gravity falls promo for the special episode was insane
I've been turned into dust at this point on how long ago some things are. :(
The Steven universe episode that hit hard for me was Mr.Greg, if you know you know🥲
It is an amazing feeling when you could say I was there for the premiere.
It's so crazy to relive these memories! I miss these times way back when! I would do anything to go back in time just to relive this for the first time ever again!
I've seen gravity falls and Steven Universe but like I watched both of them for the first time when I was pretty young and I never understood what was actually happening and now I've rewatched gravity falls a lot and Steven Universe a little bit and thinking "how did I not think about that one thing that happened in the show" and stuff and I feel dumb when I watch them now (specifically the stupid funny kinda dumb)
Oh my god I used to watch you when the steven universe movie theories were goin' strong! You taught me what a cubic zirconia is! I haven't watched this channel in years O.O
i still think about my first time watching a single pale rose bc no show had ever made my jaw drop and left me staring at the screen in shock like that (i wasn't here for this week of animation sadly, i know i would have gone insane if i had been) but my fucking god that episode still gives me chills bc i remember that first time. i also remember my little sister watched steven universe a few years later and she just came running into my room yelling "I HATE YOU" bc i told her that episode was happy fun times. it was great
I miss these days of animation 😢😢
God these two where the Kings of cartoons, i miss these days from 2015s to 2019s I was like 13 when steven universe ended ;{
Praying someday we will get GKND
God, I remember watching your SU theories throughout the show. I miss SU so much - cartoons were so much better back then.
Ah yes, when shows for kids slowly got more mature with the audience. PEAK!
i remember exactly what i was doing when i watched a single pale rose... i stayed shocked for days
When i first saw the Gravity Falls episode i literally cried. I literally almost choked on tears and stuff 😭😭👍👍
Meanwhile adventure was busy dawdling with walnuts and rain
Fitting how this video is released on the 4th anniversary of the conclusion of SU (as a whole.)
1:02 It's ok, Soos did the same thing to Wendy at the end of a tale of 2 Stans
here comes a thought had me rethinking everything
