  • Hi everyone. I hope you're having a great day. If you’ve clicked on this video, it’s safe for me to assume that you like decluttering, or perhaps you’ve been thinking about areas in your life that need some. Either way, in this video I want to encourage you to have a different approach next time you’re gonna declutter. An approach that puts buying at the forefront instead of decluttering. Over the years, I have decluttered my closet multiple times. I’ve done the KonMari method a few times too and for a while it helped, but the clutter always seems to come back and in my case, it's mostly clothes. I think it's a combo of not decluttering properly, and not knowing how to shop smarter. So this time around, im not only going to gonna ask ‘does it spark joy?’. I’m also asking 2 additional questions; 1:‘‘why am I not currently wearing it”, and 2: ‘How can I shop for the same item better in future”? This way I'm analysing my shopping habits, so I can shop better in the future. The goal is to stop the constant cycle of buying and decluttering.

    Your take on decluttering has given me more insight to how to approach it. I really liked the part where you state everything doesn't need to spark joy and should be looked at from the point of practicality, such as your feelings about footwear. Also, your brought up a good point of approaching decluttering from the standpoint of being a guide to better shopping habits. I have fallen in the trap of decluttering things just to end up buying similar items later on. It is important to have clothes for the person you are and not the person you think you are, was in the past, or want to be. Thank you for the great advice.

      You worded everything perfectly. I too have fallen in the cycle of buying and decluttering. It’s hard not to. Everything around us is constantly pushing us to buy more. Honestly by thinking more about what we buy, why and for whom we’re taking active steps to to break the cycle.

      Marie Kondo, who coined the "spark joy" concept agrees. She explains in her book that not everything will literally spark joy, but if you enjoy having a clean floor, then the mop, vacuum cleaner, broom and dustpan spark joy indirectly. Congrats on reforming your shopping habits! It truly does take a mindset shift.

    Excellent additional questions. Instead of asking “does this spark joy”, I ask “what is my favourite ?” Bras, socks, kitchen utensils don’t spark joy but I always know which are my favourites. I have been slowly working my way through my house asking this question. Makes it much easier to figure out what to keep and what can go.

      Yes! It also makes it easier to shop more for what you like/ what outfits you like instead of just individual items

    I’m not gonna lie this decluttering session felt really good. I felt like a huge weight has been lifted off shoulders. The shift in mindset really helped too. Before I was just thinking about getting rid of stuff. Now I’m thinking about the space I’m making for the items i really love. In a way this decluttering session was more like selfcare.
    Do you struggle with donating/decluttering your stuff?

    I’ve been putting off going shopping for clothes that fit just because I really don’t like going into stores and trying on clothes. But because I used to always shop online I ended up having way too many clothes I barely wore. So now I know what I love and what I need to buy in order to have clothes that fit me properly and I should go in store to make a purchase to avoid having too much. Tfs!

    I really like the way you decluttered in this video! it makes way more sense to me then the spark joy concept cause I get emotionally attached to clothes cause they are " old or nostalgic" so this is a way better way than sparking joy

      I'm glad you liked it! and same I have tons of stuff that do not spark joy, but they are very meaningful, functional and practical pieces in my closet/life.
      But now I'm focussing more on buying better/smarter, to invest in the things that do spark joy.

    7 years ago I did a massive declutter and as you that help me define better my style and stuff I’ll purchase in the future, I also don’t like patters. Im currently going into my 2 declutter, but this time is been harder as I’m trying to get items that hold sentimental 😭. Im not sure what to do with those items as they’re super old and have holes and just thinking they’ll go to the trash 🗑️ is causing an issue with me.

    I am new here! This was so useful…I am going through a similar process…it’s good to think about why I made the mistakes I did…and to see an overall type of clothing preference emerge…Also…What category or use will this new item provide? Thanks so much!

    Hello everyone :). Like I said in the video I'm putting buying at the forefront and not decluttering. In my new video, th-cam.com/video/x4AqwyBo4FQ/w-d-xo.html , I go in-depth on how I plan to shop smarter. Ps: I think I've discovered an entirely new way of shopping!

    it would be better to donate the clothes to social organizations than to throw them in the clothes bins. Clothing containers are usually sold abroad, for example as fuel. This is not very good for the environment and for humans either.

    • @doseofroxanneyt
      @doseofroxanneyt  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I hear you. But this bin is of a non-profit organization that cares for and takes in stray dogs in Greece.
      No organization is perfect, but out of all the options I had I’m comfortable with the choice I made.
