Forging a katana in a creative style from a rusty old leaf spring and using junk salvaged from the scrap yard. This is a detailed look at the process: taking a large piece of scrap steel, forging it into a katana, heat treating the blade, surface finishing, and recovering materials to create a unique handle to give the finished product a distinct post-apocalyptic vibe. The handle incorporates a variety of recycled sprockets and even uses shoelaces to create that well known handle wrap. This katana would be seen wielded by someone roaming the wasteland, rugged and brutal, yet somehow precise and refined at the same time. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

im not an expert, but is it still "forging" if you just cut it out of a leaf spring and then sharpen it?
He didn't just cut it out of a leaf spring. He cut it out of a leaf spring, forged it into a rough shape, quenched it, tempered it, ground it, polished sections of it, refined the edge both on a belt grinder and by hand on a stone... what he DIDN'T do was make a billet out of the material, and forge some fake damascus pattern into it (I say fake, because proper Damascus steel was made of ingots of Wootz steel imported from India, then worked into blades by Damascus resident artisans), and yeah, that would have been cool... but so is this crazy thing!
@@peteredwards2318 Ah, the Damascus purist. What a lot of people make are pattern-welded steel items, but it is a less recognizable name than Damascus steel, and so that has become the shorthand since 1973.
-
He did cut it out of a leaf spring, then use heat and hammering to take the curve out. After that, the heat treating and tempering are to undo the strain in the steel imposed by the aforementioned processes.
Then he used belt sanders, wheels and stones to refine the shape and sharpen.
-
There is still a respectable level of skill in making a blade from high quality scrap and modern tools.
@@MonkeyJedi99 Oh, I'm by no means a purist. What I was trying to do was ensure the person to whom I was responding, understood that actually, there was some non-trivial forgework involved in making the blade, despite the apparent simplicity of the process, and that even the very pretty "Damascus" methods employed by very skilled craftspersons, isn't quite all its cracked up to be, compared with what has come before. To be honest, I dig the hell out of the piece made in the video here, as an art piece. The pommel and guard area might make it a wee bit dangerous to try and wield effectively, what with the gear teeth and all, but its a fantastic looking object, and definitely going to stand up to more punishment than some wall hanger from the mall, so its a winner for me.

I was gonna say the same thing
You mean the JUNKIEST
Imbi Is it a katana even if you do t fold the metal.... And don’t make it out of some kind of tamohagony
spikedpsycho you're right, but if you want a durable blade and edge high end heat treated japanese steel (Tamahagane)is the best option beacause it has the qualities of a hardsteel and softsteel blade it will have a strong hardsteel structure and a razor sharp soft steel edge (that lasts long and cuts efficiently), And yes modern enhanced steel are almost the same quality, but Tamahagane steel itself shows how much process and work making katanas really are.(and also hamering steel together like in katanas are not easy oxidation is a big problem back then)
I came here to say what spikedpsycho said.
Especially about number 2. Without the proper layering and tempering, this is just a sharpened piece of trash metal.
Calling it a katana is disrespectful to the process involved with creating a real one and an understanding of why that process was important.

I asked a friend of mine, he said a Katana made like this has no soul.
You need to enchant the weapon.
actually you're not far off. the katana is made of shingane and kawagane. In this case there's no soft core wrapped in hard edge. No claying. So this sword actually doesn't have any shingane. which translate to "soul metal" so yeah. This sword has no soul.
Yeah indeed..the same concept also applies to traditional blades making like keris..need to enchant them to make it ''something''

He had already tempered the blade when he quenched it in oil . The oven was to straighten part of it that's why he tightened a straight edge to it before placing it into oven and when removing it he checked straightness

the traditional folding techniques would be able to be achieved if this guy got a power hammer
But unnecessary, folding was needed because the Tamahagane steel wasn't THAT good as people say
@@unweoncualquieradeinternet4151 They got that steel from crap materials.
@@unweoncualquieradeinternet4151 It would be needed for a used leaf spring. That stuff has so many stress cracks in it.
YOu don't need a power hammer to fold steel, just 2 other guys with sledge hammers.
Well the folding was just to smelt out the impurities in the steel, because the steel they were working with was not that great despite what people claim. After they fold it, they get the best steel they can with the least amount of impurities. The slag that cools first typically is the iron, or other materials that you don’t want. That’s why you see them brush the material when they fold.
Now if he folded this leaf spring, he probably could get some of the deep penetrating rust that’s inside out, or the stress cracks but he would not need 100-1000 folds to do that.
In fact if you fold steel enough you actually can weaken it by essentially folding it back into iron.
