Here's something about the gun situation in the US. First, I would say the guy in that Sportsmobile told you no one would mess with you because they'd assume you're all heavily armed was exaggerating the need for safety-for effect, cool factor, whatever. I live in Arizona and have camped out in the middle of nowhere and never felt unsafe. Being armed has just been a precaution-like wearing a seat-belt. I feel far more need when in a city. The other thing is that the cities which have banned or highly restricted firearm ownership-like Los Angeles, Detroit, New York, etc. actually have the highest violent crime rates.
By the way, I worked as a Public Safety Officer in Florida and often rode shotgun with my friend, a Deputy Sheriff, both in a squad car and in a little police boat. I also served five years as an Arizona Ranger (we are auxiliary law enforcement but fully armed). I was part of a training for dealing with active shooters in which a local high school was inhabited by actors and we had to make our way through to find the "shooter", all of us using special firearms that chambered only Simunition (plastic bullets that hurt like hell and even draw blood). That doesn't make me an expert, but I have been around stuff, and the aforementioned statistics are confirmed by FBI records and other crime records.
I was born in Cuba and my parents fled that regime to escape the communist oppression. Some of my family members were in concentration camps. One thing they always told me was how Castro used Batista's gun registration system to find out who owned guns and then confiscate them with Castro's phrase: "Armas para que?" which translates more or less to "guns for what purpose?". This was followed by imprisonment, torture, and executions of dissidents-as in all other similar systems.
Also, the "gun death clocks" and stuff like that count deaths from criminals shot by police as well as gang on gang violence to skew the numbers. There are morons in every race, creed, color, and nationality. Don't be fooled by the skewing by the media about gun owners: just about every gun owner I have met-including out in the South where people have created bad stories, has been a decent, responsible person.
One thing I can say is the problem has been the steady decline of morals, values, and common decency. Kids in the US used to ride their bicycles to school carrying target rifles on their backs to compete in school. High school students often drove to school with a rifle and/or shotgun on a rack behind the seat. Most kids had knives on them. A good friend did a show and tell in his middle school with his dad's 1911 pistol. There were no metal detectors or bans. there were still fights. No shootings or stabbings. Now schools have metal detectors and checks and bans, and shootings and stabbings while teachers and students get to play sitting ducks.
Anyway, thanks for another good show, and I hope my long-winded reply wasn't too boring!
Hope you're having a blast in Africa!!!

I have a mate who had a Welding and fabrication shop in rural Australia who had an employee (who had certified training) who took the guard off a 9" angle grinder and fitting somehow a 15" dropsaw blade to it. First spin up, the blade came apart. A bit slashed his throat and he bled to death on the spot. Workplace prosecuted him and it cost him $80k in legals fees, plus fines, plus a consultant to rework his HSE system. The guy was a nice guy and it was a sad funeral but he he did it to himself is the general opinion. This matter broke him and he sold the business and retired. That's a shit deal.

The conversation around gund and camping was interesting. I'm in the US and have camped, done remote travel, overland, all my life.
I've never once had a conversation like Andrew did with his mates.
I own guns but never travel with them. Over the course of 30 years I've never felt unsafe remote camping or traveling here across all the western states and mountain states.
The gun situation is a bit overblown.
I will say that the gun violence problem here is illegal guns and drug trafficking coming over the Mexico border.
Australia has no such 3rd world situations on the border.

A couple trips ago we were in Wyoming in the 80 series all alone with the cruise control set at 67mph. ( speed limit 80 mph ) a car came up behind us and tailgated for a few miles, making me uncomfortable. Virginia asked me, what’s wrong with them? I replied, they’re from New Jersey. Sure enough, when they finally went around us, New Jersey plates. People accustomed to living in metro areas do not know how to drive in wide open places. Price of gas? About 3.75 a gallon here. Up way north, 6.75 a gallon. We have it good here.

@@mowerman60 Shame on me? They had wide open passing lane for hundreds and hundreds of miles as it is a four lane interstate in Wyoming. The left lane was wide open. All they had to do was pass. Unfortunately for some folks, such as yourself, It is necessary to spell out, in complete detail the entire event, as I was directly referencing a scenario the guys were discussing. My fault for assuming that folks watching Andrew possess an above average intellect. This phenomenon, as I said before, happens a lot on open interstates because people that are accustomed to driving in congested metro areas have nary a clue how to drive in wide open interstates. They tail gate every day and bring that horrible habit with them to the wide open spaces.

I might be a bit paranoid, but I feel that the EV revolution is actually designed to limit freedom of movement. Infrastructure, practicality, and efficiency of electric vehicles are not going to achieve any meaningful results within our lifetimes. There’s a backlash against airlines too. The solution, according to the logic, is not to travel beyond walking or cycling distance.
What the real need is a reinvention of the internal combustion/jet engine to make it more efficient towards carbon neutrality, such as engineering alternative fuels to be cleaner and developing power plants that can benefit.
I overland all over the world and attempt to be as eco friendly as possible. But, I’m limited by the basic technology that enables my odysseys but hinders their eco cleanliness. I have solar power banks, rechargeable everything, but a 3 litre petrol engine that uses fossil fuels. I drive responsibly, don’t chew up trails, and I’m contemptuous of anyone that does, but I’m unable to quench my wanderlust and sense of adventure in any other way.
I don’t want my freedom of movement to be limited.

Reactions - to the diverse topics, definitely don't read, TLDR - and move on...
    John's peeve re. workshop tools:
Angle grinders and working with hot sharp metal in general does lesd the PPE to include gloves as well as a spark resistant shirt and eye / face protection. (Full risk assessments here)
Rotating machinery - drills, lathes and to a degree milling machines - grab and pull clothing into the death dealer. High speed cutting tools - saws, grinders etc, don't tend to pull in as much as slice through.
Of course under all circumstances keep the fingers - and all body parts out of the danger zone ( including all rotating or reciprocating parts and "spinning" swarf) - eye PPE (rated classes and / or faceshields) - should be used in conjunction with every power tool and most handtools - especially those for performing striking actions..
Peeve re fuel costs - simply work out how mich catching a taxi everywhere will cost - if you don't like cars, catch a taxi, or get on a bus... (taxi to the train station service - there must be a market for a 1-3 mile "commute to train" - to avoid having to wait for the 65 seat bus to come)
Free: Americans are only as free as the recognition their "betters" have for the constitution.
If the political class decrees the "freedom lovers" are now enemies of the state - they wouldn't last long, despite whatever they reckon... Rural Australia isn't as firearms free as Americans might presume. lol...
(Even more than a few short arms around the place.)
BS Andrew - -anyone carrying their "Automatic" self defense, work of art" - it is nearly inconceivable that it is truly Automatic, SemiAuto isn't the same thing. (recheck the laws re Auto weapons in the USA, they aren't inexp[ensive, nor free to possess willy-nilly - SemiAuto, military "lookalikes" - aren't harmless in trained hands however, not FullAuto.)
Camping in much of the world - much safer to board in villages (to be truly away from anyone is rare - Australia and the rural USA are nearly unique) than truly camp in rural areas, accepting hospitality is also likely to convey some obligation of protection. Australia is so much safer than nearly any other place, thugs and hoodlims in Africa, South America or Asia are truly hard core - and have no feeling for outsiders.
Measuring tools, I love my 150mm Dial Mitutoyo calipers - so useful, easy to read and perfectly mechanical. (my near-eyesight has got worse over the years.) A fitters pocket 150mm ruler does the bolt selection sizing, number drills (100um drill set need callipers definitely - true fitters / engineers concerns)....
lol, Re. the idiot rural tailgater - refuses to pass, and can't maintain their own game - speeds up in every overtaking zone and slows in every single lane - drafts you, then continues to play cat and mouse - learn to use your own Cruising speed / cruise control, don't drive to the next car, drive your own trip. So much better to fly, no one tailgates you in the air, everyone is flying their own trip - up there (I drive and fly by the numbers)....
Europeans are Particularly clued up to not hog the wrong lanes - and give way to the correct vehicles.
    - Lane discipline is number 1.
(I have driven in nearly every country in Europe - East and West - and north America, in some places, if you don't keep up (to the speed of the traffic) the truck behind you will leave you in the ditch.. )
Re Camping - tent or swag camping is a slightly more poverty style of travel - but "minimalism" does have charm - burying sh!t 3 feet deep, behind a campsite, can only be done effectively with incredibly low density of traveller occupancy... (Higher occupancy requires amenities be installed.) - nothing beats Sh!!tting in the back of.... lol....

Drivers not keeping up and slow speed in NSW is a side effect of Draconian speed enforcement and ridiculous fear mongering by those in power eg every K counts, or even a few Ks can kill, and so we have people that are fearfully to even do the speed limit (which isn't the limit that to error margin in speedos)
Car mesmerised as you describe is a side effect of radar cruise control. You have your cruise on, but the car slows down so gently you don't realise it is occurring. It then takes a some kind significant action to realise that you are travelling far slower than you intended.

I just got to say this...
    I like both you guys.
I subscribe to both channels and very few others. I love both your content, BUT, I can't stand it when you get together like this! You're on different planets and it simply doesn't work.
Please, God... MALS by keeping these two apart!
