Can we talk about the butterfly motif for a second? It's shown in the begging, note that it's red and Vos is talking about how it did and still does make her feel guilty. Throughout the story, we see many elements alluding to symmetry or mirroring, kind of like how both sides of the butterfly do. Then at the end, when Colin's body is bleeding and his blood is converging with Ira's blood, it creates a blood butterfly, and then we're taken to a scene where Vos is describing the butterfly without mentioning any feelings of guilt. It's as if she emerged from this round of possession having gone through a mental metamorphosis. Where she was laying down and the machinery on her being her cacoon and she emerges unburdened by family, empathy, or humanity; she is a fully-formed killing butterfly who can fly freely, so to speak.

Random fact, the whole recalibrating your body thing is also a massive thing for astronauts. Not relevant to the film but its cool to think about, literally almost everything about how you feel and move your body is altered (a lot of people actually get sick in their first couple weeks on the ISS), and I'd imagine a whole different body (even on earth)
    would feel even worse.

The main character sounds like the role she plays in a Black Mirror episode called Crocodile.

Okay so this is off the cuff with little planning, but having watched this movie as an autistic person and a third year psychology student, I can read a lot of autistic themes in the movie. Specifically, the lack of identity Tas feels, the inability to gage what amount of force you need to use (because she's in a different body), the mimicking of other people, and the objects Tas has to remember who she is.
If I'm in a situation where I'm the only autistic person, I mimic everyone around me and I use social scripts. It's often seen as like a malicious thing, but it's not. I'm not trying to lie about who I am or anything, it's just that the real me is often unwelcome in allistic environments. So I mimic the body language around me and I have social scripts that I have to practice for specific interactions, and you can see Tas do that in the movie. I also play down my autistic symptoms so if I'm stimming, I can minimise it to smaller movements like messing with my hands rather than just playing the drums on any nearby surface (shout out to high school for essentially brainwashing me into learning how to do this) and like, Tas clearly has to play down who she is to be able to be the person she's possessing.
I also mimic people without realising which is down to my hyperempathy. I start speaking in my friends' voices by accident and it's just my way of trying to relate to the people around me. I copy their mannerisms without realising and their phrasings and stuff, and it's just my autistic brain relating to my friends. Luckily, most of my close friends are autistic and/or neurodivergent so they get it.
My best friend is autistic and he can never gage how much force he needs to use. So Tas struggling to control Colin's strength is so familiar to me because my best friend does that all the time.
When I was younger, I'd often hyperempathise with specific objects I'd always have with me (I still hyperempathise with objects and there's nothing more annoying than not being able to sleep at 4am because your brain latched onto the Titanic and now you're so lonely because God, that shipwreck must be so lonely) and it'd be part of my identity. And a lot of autistic folks do this as adults, and again, you see it in the movie with Tas using like the watch and the butterfly to remember who she is.
Also just, lack of identity in general. A lot of us don't get diagnosed or recognised until we're adults so suddenly at like age 19, I have an explanation for everything in my life previously, but now I have to reconceptualise everything about myself because suddenly, I'm not who I thought I was. And like, that comes with trauma and is the trauma part of who I am? And most, if not all autistic folks are traumatised during childhood and like, is that part of who we are? When I take on traits of my friends, does that change my identity? Are my special interests part of my identity? My hyperfixations? And having spoken to a lot of autistic folks (because the majority of my friends are autistic), a lot of us have this issue.
And seeing Tas being so uncomfortable and so isolated from her friends and family is just so familiar for me. I know that feeling so intimately because it's what I go through everytime I'm the only autistic person in the room. I'm so aware of it because I feel so empty and so different, and often, if I do tell people that I'm autistic, they then talk down to me and you know, I relate to Tas in wanting to just stab someone when that happens. Because like, I'm still a person, I'm more than my autism, but I'm also not ashamed of it.
So like, I guess I can read the movie as an autistic allegory in like, a battle between who you actually are and who you need to be to not stand out as weird in an allistic situation. And you're so exhausted because you live everyday on edge trying to make sure you interact correctly and you act allistic (because that's what most allistic people want, that's what ABA therapy does. It's rare I meet an allistic person who is okay with me being visibly autistic around them) and you're just doing the most at all times, and by the end, you're just empty and you're tired. It doesn't matter what side has won because now you don't have a clue you actually are.
And wow, that's very bleak oops lmao

When I came back from my first deployment, I was standing in Wal-Mart with a full cart of food, trying to find Gatorade of all things, and had a "moment". I went early but it was starting to be later so it was getting flooded with people, it was a payday so it was way busier than usual, and I just, IDK, mentally disassociated? I forgot where I was and what I was doing. I had to call my friend and tell her what was happening because I KNEW something was wrong but I couldn't identify what. She had to basically tell me to take my cart to checkout, etc, and was on the phone with me until I put my shit in the car. The way that she portrays the detachment with her friends/family, rehearsing lines... it's REALLY real.

I know you've commented before how the genres blend almost seamlessly at times, and I KNOW the focus of your channel is Horror, but I think it would be really cool to get a Sci-Fi corner commentary. The Uncut version is the only one I could find but I no the other version is out there since I have seen online that there are people who have seen both. The scalp stuff at the beginning gave me flashbacks to the movie Bad Hair. The kidnapping gave me Inception vibes and the actually dat minding made me think of the scene in Fight Club where the catalogue is walked though, but what if the the catalogue you walked through actually had the models using the products. the Part of this reminded me of Brazil because of its outlook while the female in a male body reminded me of Freaky for some reason. The vision distortion were like Eye Floaters except way more defined and the the different levels of VR was a lot like The Matrix with the the sleekness of The Thirteenth Floor. The possession justification was a lot like seeing the kids in The Haunting of Bly Manor trying to make sense of what their bodies did while their consciousness were away. Have a great Holiday break y'all and here is hoping for pure awesomeness in 2021. B~)

The gore definitely delivered in this film surely. Cronenberg is synonomous with gore, and this is no exception. Brilliant concept, well shot and acted effectively 😊

Lords of Chaos had one of the most brutal stabbing scenes I’ve ever seen. Dude gets stabbed about 25 times and it’s a 9 minute scene that doesn’t cut away

I agree about the kill thing James said. In a lot of a movies getting stabbed or like hacked with an axe kills people so fast it’s downright humane.

given the description from y'all, the Rated R version being sold is substantially different from what the review is about, just in the visceral impact of the gore and body horror moments

The debate at the beginning about if this was horror or not was baffling to me, and I just came from watching the episode about “Is it horror?” It never even crossed my mind that this would not be seen as a horror movie. Fascinating what makes people classify horror. Regardless, I loved this movie. It was so bleak, but so interesting.

46:21 It looked like some sort of art piece of a fountain that uses soundwaves to make the water make weird shapes etc. I've seen it before, so I thought it was just a normal thing XD
