Mikael Keaton plays an architect who lives in a super large house by the lake designed by himself, with his hot second wife younger than him who is a super successful writer and is pregnant. It's scary how relatable the movie is.
Around the 45 min. mark James and Chelsea describe how to make this movie better, by having him start saving a bunch of people only to find out later that it was for some sinister reason...that is literally the plot of White Noise 2!
"Oops all dissolves" 😂😂 I died. A sign of how great this pod is, I legit can't decide if I enjoy more when you review bad movies or good ones. I actually saw this back in the day. I didn't remember a scene of it listening to this.
I saw this with a girl I liked and some friends. She was so bored of it she decided to make the first move and kissed me. Totally took me off guard. We all left like a half hour into the movie. Fun times lol
Mothman Prophecies is actually pretty good, has 2 scenes that genuinely unsettled me as a teen. And great performances all around, I think it would be a very interesting movie for the pod
I came here to say the same thing. I generally hate this time for horror as well, but The Mothman Prophecies was different and generally pretty creepy. Worth a look for anyone who hasn't seen it.
I wish they'd give TMP a shot. Less a horror film than a creepy, moody thriller. It has its own vibe unlike anything from the early 2000's. Sorely overlooked IMO. **INDRID COLD**
The second one is actually better 😂 it takes the potential plot line of White Noise and goes with it? Its pretty fun. Highly recommend!! So happy to have the podcast back!!
Mothman Prophecies is actually a super solid movie. It falls apart and slows down a little in the third act but is otherwise great. And to top it off it has one of the most chilling scenes in any movie that I've ever seen
You bringing up the wavy pepper jar reminded me that I just had a conversation with my mom about that. She knew EXACTLY what I was talking about when I told her about the wavy pepper jar from the paranormal activity episode because she had one in her childhood kitchen (along with the Italian chef statue that was also brought up in that episode)
it's funny, James says the mid-2000s horror movies inspired by The Ring are what got him out of horror. I totally understand, they were not good. But I feel the same way about early 2010, found photoaged movies inspired by Paranormal Activities, they got me out of horror during that period. PA is such a bore to me.
Yeah, I’m in the same boat! I got exposed early into horror on syfy channel of all places and all the cheesy bad mid-2000s movies were my favorite thing back then. When it all became PA and Saw knockoffs, I got soooo burnt out and didn’t jump back into it until Get Out came out.
It Follows, The Witch Get Out, Us brought me back. I always loved horror but mainstream horror sucked with the PG-13 supernatural found footage/haunted house or jump scare thing.
I'm so sporadic with horror stuff I like, stuff from the 90's 00's and 2010's. Event Horizon is still one of the craziest horror movies I ever saw as a kid. Deep Blue Sea is still one of the best shark horror movies imo. And Like.Share.Follow was impressive as well.
PSA to anyone thinking about buying one of the Kamikoto knives. They’re a scam based in Hong Kong and the knifes are made in Utah. They’re the quality of Wal-Mart knives. Just get a Wusthof. Source: almost a decade of professional kitchen experience.
James bashing early 2000's supernatural PG-13 movies is so great. I can't stand this era of horror. It feels so corporate and lame. I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets this upset talking about them.
As you started this podcast, I thought you were talking about the Kiefer Sutherland movie, Mirrors from 2008. I imagine it's probably a better watch than White Noise, but they feel like the exact same movie.
darkness falls had permanently damaged me lol. i’m in my early 20s and saw it as a kid (maybe it came on tv? idk really) still losing her baby teeth and was also irrationally scared of the dark. i still sleep with some form of nightlights to this day. it’s something i haven’t tried touching since then and it would be funny to see it covered because i KNOW that it’s not nearly as bad as i remember.
I remember getting scared as a kid at Signs but looking back, it hasn't aged well. 😂 But for what it is, I respect the efforts that the filmmakers did in terms of the wide shots & the scares.
This movie and the three "ghosts" in this movie traumatized me as a kid, my cousin had to walk me home at night I was so scared. Can't imagine watching it again so here I am!

Static noise was associated with supernatural activity so much in the early 2000’s in horror and I remember being spooked the same way where I just didn’t want to deal with it. I remember this movie’s trailers when I was 13-14 after seeing the Japanese ‘One Missed Call’ and my friend and her cousin and the 3 of us all decided to pass 😂
I remember the trailer! My sister and I were so hyped up for this we rented it and was sooooo disappointed! And the scary line from the trailer “get out of my house” that we keep saying to each other never happens in the movie
Seeing this unlocked memories I forgot I had of me watching this movie years and years ago. I remember feeling a sense of melancholy throughout most of the film. It’s kinda a sad movie more than anything

Chelsea, thank you so much for making me feel better. The trailer for this movie and the trailer for The Fourth Kind gave me nightmares. I had a friend who made such fun of me because this trailer gave me nightmares.

There is slot of nostalgia for these early 2000s horror films. Went to see white noise in theaters in high school. It creeped me out, but luckily my taste in movies now is light years better than it was back then. Lol
I gotta say. I loved this movie. Saw it in the theaters with high school friends and remember being shocked when Keaton (SPOILER) gets killed by the ghosts. Thinking they never kill the main character! And I enjoyed the odd choice music at the end. Music from the era. I remember being creeped out because this was “based on” technology used to hear ghosts.
I remember being so amazed by EVP when I first saw the trailer for White Noise. Granted I was in Grade 9 but I even did a school project on it. Now that interest fizzled out in months but when I saw the movie, I remember feeling so embarrassed. Like damn, you were really interested in this stuff/movie?!?!
For some reason I always confuse this movie with Pulse, which was a terrible US remake around the same time There was just a run of terrible tech infused horror movies in the mid-2000s
This video is two years old at this point, mindblowingly, but, if it’s any consolation, Chelsea, whenever Annabelle came out, I was absolutely petrified of the trailer, to the point I’d cover my eyes, as a teenager. That movie ALSO did not remotely live up to how scared the trailer made me, very disappointing. So I deeply sympathize with being mortified of being so scared of something so not scary lmao I’m so sorry girl
Darkness Falls is a good movie. Has one of the best cold opens I've seen and really stuck with me for a long time. Also the hospital was terrifying as well. The scares suffer from the fact that the more you see the killer in that movie the less scary it is.
That's true. I didn't hate Darkness Falls. It starts out great, but there wasn't really enough material for a full movie, and yeah... they shouldn't have showed that much of the toothfairy.
If you want a truly frightening take on the concept of white noise, read (i know, actually read) William Peter Blatty's 'Legion,' the sequel to 'The Exorcist." The dead communicating through white noise plays a major part in one of the side storylines in the book.
I can relate, around 2003-2008 I went to the movies every week, sometimes I would see 2 or even 3 movies in a day, a couple times even 4. Miss those times.
I remember it being half decent by 2005 standards but I oddly enough could have predicted this not aging well even than (keep in mind I was around 9 years old) it didn’t live up to the trailer but what it did right was establish an aesthetic that lead me towards more obscure, visually pleasing horror films despite existing within the “PG13 cash out” era. It had this sort of weird, sterile look and strange filmography that I quite enjoyed for its oddity’s and sought out going forward. With that said I LOVE brutalist glass and concrete architecture so I may be biased
I was also in high school when this came out, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people were talking about it. I never saw it, but I also mix it up with that moving featuring Jim Caviezel, lol.
