  • Sometimes the best way to stop the Xenon is to keep them from entering your sectors. But fleets and defense stations are expensive so if you need to make a blockade on a budget this X4 Foundations 5.0 guide will help you with setting up your laser towers

    X4: Foundations is the latest title in the popular X series of space simulation / sandbox games, played as action games from a first-person perspective in a living breathing universe, with TRADE FIGHT BUILD THINK as the common tag-line. X4: Foundations is unique in its depth, simulating an entire universe of NPC ships and stations, forming a realistic economy. It consists of a huge universe, simulated from the bottom up. Hundreds of stations, and thousands of ships, trade goods among themselves. Prices change based on supply and demand; resources are mined and processed in several stages. This economy is linked directly to the simulation of major conflicts in a universe with dynamically-acting factions. Every player decision can dramatically change the future of the game universe. Step in and live your very own space adventure!

    Yes, mines don't work OOS, their only use is in no-reploss station destroying.
    To add a few things i've found out on my recent playthough (got the idea from AI actually):
    Instead of placing turrets at the gate i recommend placing them around a station nearest to the gate, xenon tend to ignore turrets and focus on a station, giving your turrets much longer lifespan.
    If you need this kind of defence really early before you can afford a ship to lay them, the free frigate from Boso questline will do nicely.
    And if the random placement of protect position is too unpleasant to look at, same effect can be achieved with movement commands forming a nice triangle or other geometric shape (preferably around a station). The free osprey from Boso's quest works especially well given how slow it is.
    One last thing, turrets will aggro military ships from -10 factions and are bound to cause rep hits. It's well worth it anyway, one in-sector K kill will bounce back that rep to positive in an instant.

    • @TheYdyp
      @TheYdyp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The -10 aggro on laser towers is already fixed in beta 5.10. But yeah until then either make sure you are -9 with all the factions you don't want to go to war with before using this tactic.

      @@dbrowdy When Boso asks you to help him escape from the split (after you docked with your HQ for the first time), there will be an abandoned frigate near the point where you meet the decoy freighter. It is not shown as abandoned on the map, but if you select it, you can see that it has no owner, so you can simply pop over in your space suit and claim it. I think the equipment on it is semi-random, with the weapons usually being some combo of bolt repeater and plasma for the main guns, and bolt or pulse turrets. The cargo can be really random, my current one had like 40 mines and a bunch of drones on it, while at other times i found them with lots of missiles, or a full hold of laser towers. One time, back when X4 had just been released, I found a cerberus with a full hold of nividium.... that was a fun little money infusion ^^

      @TheYdyp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dbrowdy When you get the mission to rescue Boso Ta there is an abandoned frigate near the empty space you reach before the transports dock to the station.
      Easy to miss if you don't know, but now that you know it will be hard to miss. If you haven't picked it up it probably still is there but you will have a harder time finding it due to no waypoint to the spot close anymore.

    So i have been trying this for two days now, and i came to the conclusion that it works well when you just place them in a line by simply flying BACKWARDS.
    I usually start with an Advanced Satellite (to keep an eye on the area) and then the 95 Laser Turrets i have with me.
    First one line until the counter is down to 50, then i fly downwards to make a second line with the rest. Right in front of the gate. Well, a few kilometers.
    With this i have a fairly decend Anti-Xenon wall that can be easily deployed at every single Jump Gate leading to Xenon sectors.

    Commonwealth economy never got off the ground, a K assassinated the Argon Prime Wharf on day 1. ZYA shipyard and wharf gone. ZYA & HAT are scattered remnants. Profit Center and its TEL shipyard and wharf just fell, it's a xenon sector now. FRF are holed up in the corner with a stalling economy, losing space with 3 Xenon sectors between them and the rest of the map, Argon prime is hollowed out and about to turn red... TER intervention corps are few, and die fast. Weirdly though VIG seem to be massing hundreds of combat ships in their tiny space. Maybe there's hope with the criminal underworld. ARG shipyard is badly damaged, would be dead if I had not been working miracles with my cobra skin dancing the Ks and Qs attacking it. There are Xenon solar and defense stations everywhere.

Or take a torpedo launcher, you can deal with it by yourself.

      The tighter and more you mass your towers, the more effective they are. 5 towers won't do anything - try 500. To get them tightly packed, tell the ship to Fly and Wait, and once it has completely stopped, repeatedly deploy towers until you have as many as you want. The towers take a couple of seconds each to actually drop, so watch the "docked ships" count until it gets to zero at which point the drop queue has completed. Don't move the ship while it is dropping, you want the towers close together.
      I think I find that being Out of Sector helps the towers drop, but that just might be interpretational voodoo.
      It sounds like you are in a particularly bad scenario, so, um good luck?

      If Terran sectors are untouched, start your economy there.
      Silicon and gas miners should earn you a reasonable amount. First station, e-cells, in mercury. Make it trade with your faction only. Build a trade station in the asteroid belt (Buy from player faction, sell to all). Sell e cells. You should earn ~ 400k per ecell producer, per hour, up to saturation. I typically overproduce by 1-3 panels (10000-30000 cells), to also supply my stations as I spin up my production base. Purchase your traders outside terran space, if there are still safe paths from commonweath to terran space.
      From there bootstrap up to protein paste/MRE, depending on demand. This will allow you to purchase the cheaper blueprints and avoid spending several hours waiting for the carbide and computronic substrate blueprints. Protein paste also only requires 1 gas and 1 solid, so no autominer micromanagement/trade station annoyances
      One you have those blueprints, start making carbide and substrate. You can very easily earn tens of millions per hour distributing substrate. Whether you decide to use intermediate trade stations for the autominers limited to 1 gas and one solid each, or just use blanket automine behaviour is up to you. Blanket automine works 90% of the time imo, but when it fails, it fails spectacularly.
      Ship loadout depends on mods. I run VRO, so my advice on vanilla isn't up to date. Based on what I remember from vanilla, L-bolts, m-pulses/bolts. As you are building your economy play through the terran plotline (the protectorate, not pioneers). Side with the terrans and recieve the syn, the strongest destroyer in the game. That will single handedly defeat pretty much any xenon ship/medium fleet. I don't believe it comes well equipped, so be prepared to drop 10-20 mil to outfit it to fight.
      From there, you can probably push the xenon back. The Syn will shred anything up to a xenon-I, without contest. For the I, you may need some ship-mods, you may not, again depends on vanilla balancing (which I don't remember)

    there's a mod that does this far better if you are cool with modding your game - lookup 'Waypoint Field' in either Nexus or the Steam workshop. Allows you to set the shape, density, size etc of your laser tower 'cloud'. Also it allows you to set helpers - I have 5x Falx's, 4 of them set to follow the fifth. I select the fifth, right click the place I want covered, and the 5 Falxs work together to cover the area in laser towers. you can also choose to create minefields if that's your goal, but I haven't bothered for the same reason in the video.

      Mk2 does more damage and has more health. also more expensive. they ARE worth the added cost, but trying to put a bunch of them at gates leading to xenon space is going to get pretty darn expensive, AND they will draw bigger xenon which will destroy them when the xenon notice that all their smaller ships are poofing at that gate. if you put enough of them even the bigger xenon will fall to them, but you'll lose quite a few towers so you'll have to replace them.

    I place them in "rays" from the Jump Gate in an arc of 180°. I start wit the 2 main arms: from the nacelles to the front. Then left and right from the gate, then up and lastly down.
    Why do this?
    Seldom the xenstards get out of the gate in straight 90° from the gate and fly aside. This totally tricks them out.
    The problem comes when the destroyers kicks in.
    How to laserdeal with it?
    The solution is RINGS.
    You get near a laser tower from the two front lasertower arms you placed from the gate and start deploying lasertowers in a circle (or, if your ship has lot of LT space and is maneuverable, in a spiral from the gate which is way better) like forming more "gates" in the front of the gate.
    Why doing so? The lasertower will target all the subsystems of the xenon destroyers which doesn't have a lot of anti-fighters equip. The last onceswill be the xenon destroyers shields. Ok, I'm about to get an objection: "but LT does little damage? Can really 200 of them deal with a destroyer? What if some fighters kicks in?" Well that's not a problem: actually the turret AI *IS BETTER THEN THE XENON ONE* so what happens is that they disengage from the destroyer for a sec just to vaporize the fighters and then comes back on the surgery. Yeah, you may lose 6-7 in the process but hey... LT-MK1 are totally cannon fodder right? For the cost: who cares?
    Hope it helps.

      They perform perfectly fine OOS, in my experience. And since they are place-and-forget, you really can put your attention elsewhere for long periods, just occasionally looking back to see if anything has managed to wipe out the towers. And the more towers you place, the much less likely anything will be able to survive them. In my game, XEN seem to like to get close to the towers to try to attack them, and S and M class XEN get deleted in under 2 seconds when they come in range.

    Mines seems pretty useless. Their encyclopedia page shows that all mines do the same amount of damage. Regular mines don't track, tracker mines track everyone, and F/F mines only track hostiles. You're actually just paying for the ability to not friendly fire stuff. Regular mines never hit anything, and tracking mines are too slow and their radius too small to hit S or M ships. The only thing you can reliable hit with a minefield are L and XL ships, and then you realise that they don't do enough damage to be worth deploying. Fifty mines are not gonna kill a K. I dropped a minefield and then dropped laser towers inside it to lure the K in, and when it barged through the field it was hit by practically every mine and didn't even lose half it's shields. I am not gonna invest in 400 mines and pray they all hit just to kill one K.
    I did get a couple of kills on Xenon resource ships by dropping F/F mines near their build storage dock for one of their stations, but that's about it. Is there any reason to invest in mines? I don't think there is.

    • @punthebun
      @punthebun 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think mines are pretty good for economic warfare (i.e. ambushing freighters and miners, like you already did).
      Pay attention to the routes the AI freighters take, and then drop like 50 or 70 mines in their path, right at the point they drop out of travel mode. (preferably do so with an expendable ship that you aren't flying yourself). Sit back, and watch the fireworks unfold. (There's a reason there are always "clear minefield near XYZ station" missions :-) )
      Sure, you could do the same with laser towers, but those will get the attention of sector security, while mines won't.
      If you want to be sneaky, mines are what you want.

    A Large transport can load up 250 laser towers at a time I think. Deploy them by a gate from out of sector in a big blob. You completely missed how these laser tower blobs can be used to make millions early game by picking up loot in a small ship. You must not know. You can set up a blockade and just sit by it raking in 10s of millions an hour. You can also send a small ship to "collect drops in sector." So while good your guide is lacking. It needs a part 2. "Profit from laser tower spam." Also you are missing how carrying a few lasertowers is a good getaway strategy for you if you get jammed up eject a few laser towers and run away. Laser towers are also great offence because of their long range you can use them to distract the enemy while you shred them. So yea your review is missing lots of things to help the new players. You also completely missed how you can load up a cheap or captured ship with mines, fly it into a competitors docking port and eject the mines. Many laughs ensue. You missed how you can blockade stations, shut them down, especially the terrans by ejecting laser towers inside their saucer shaped docking ports. This move single handedly cripples their empire.
