      In the case of Muggle-born children, a teacher from Hogwarts personally visited the family to give them the big magic reveal. Harry was an odd case; his family knew about magic but kept the truth from him, so when it was clear that no reply letter was forthcoming by the deadline, Hagrid was permitted to meet him.
      I also like to think that Dumbledore had a wee bit too much fun with the letters.

    I think the answer to the last question about muggles getting their Hogwarts letter in person refers to when Snape explains this to Lily in a flashback in book 7 and tells her that someone will be delivering her acceptance letter in person because she’s muggle born (and so they can explain to her parents that she’s a witch).

    Pewter has a melting point of 170 - 230°C so yes it is considered softer than other metals (i.e. copper: 1084°C; aluminum: 660°C; carbon steel: 1425 - 1540°C; brass: 930°C; cast iron: 1204°C; stainless steel: 1375 - 1530°C) but I assume that's because first years would not be brewing anything that requires extreme high heat or sustained heating.

    About the pewter cauldrons: they actually explain this factor in the books! Why else is the thickness of cauldron bottoms so important? Every metal has a point of thickness at which it becomes pliable, but each one is different! How else could you have wires, platings, and statues made from the same materials?

    • @lajvanegmond
      @lajvanegmond 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      j is right pewter consist mostly of tin and has a low meltingpoint, 170-230 °C (338-446 °F). a woodfire in a grate could reach 500 °C (932 F). a gasflame as used in your chemistry lessons at school gets around 300 °C.(572 F). so pewter on a Fire is indeed useless. it should be copper or brass (melting point around 1000 °C (1832 F)

    • @speculativemusings3593
      @speculativemusings3593 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@lajvanegmond Huh, I did not know that. Looking further into it, turns out that we muggles mainly use pewter for either decorative or utilitarian items, mainly because if it broke, it was easier to melt down the pieces and remake it. Real pewter of the kind they used in the medieval times usually had a high lead content, which tended to cause lead-poisoning.
      I’ll say a few things with regard to its use here:
      1) They’ve got magic, so the health concerns are likely countered by something we don’t see. Maybe they’re just immune?
      2) Neville often screws up his potions, and one of those screw-ups is melting through the bottoms of his cauldrons. This means that accurate temperature maintenance is a factor in potion making. Magical fires probably help with that.
      3) We later see other types of cauldrons- gold, silver, brass, copper, iron, fire crab shell, etc. We even hear tell of a failed attempt at a cheese cauldron. This implies that specific types were used with specific potions. Historically IRL, pewter was considered highly conductive for magic, while iron was almost anti-magic. So pewter would be useful for low magic individuals or ingredients, while iron is probably reserved for magically potent ingredients that could be highly reactive.
      As such, pewter’s use in cauldrons for first years, who likely can’t channel much magic yet, can’t be trusted with high heat flames, and who may accidentally destroy their cauldrons, is probably justified.

      @@weckar I meant that outside of the Harry Potter series, historically speaking, pewter was considered to be magically conductive within the practice of witchcraft. As such, it stands to reason that pewter was chosen by JKR in reference to that knowledge.

    The last question. Usually for Muggleborns they have a member of staff deliver the letter in person so the parents can have the situation explained to them, and to have people on hand to alter memories should there be negative reception, considering it's revealing the magical world to muggles which may violate the statute of secrecy.
    Edit: I think the reason harry was an exception is because the Dursleys already knew about magic, even though they disliked it, they were aware of it because of Dumbledore's letter and Petunia's family.

    24:35 I actually have my personal thoughts on that!
    You obviously can't just scale up and make more magical things. That's still relatively normal to them. An even higher magic setting would be more akin to sci-fi for them.
    On the contrary however, they are EXTREMELY behind in technology. To the point where it might seem almost... magical... to those who didn't grow up in the muggle world.
    TL:DR In magical settings sci fi and fantasy essentially swap roles.

    I think funeral home is actually a good business front for money laundering because the services and prices are not only not standardized, they are famously highly priced up and remain quite cash-based despite the rise of other payment options. And it won't be easily discovered since people don't usually ask or talk about how much funerary services cost. Almost no one price shops for that. It's the kind of thing only the most finance-savvy people even think about. The biggest issue might be the interval between clients though... (lol that sounds so ominous)

  • @DeadSezSo

    The more I think about it, the more I really don't like where they are going with the draco story in the slytherin harry series. Starting in chamber, the whole reason Tom took ginny into the chamber instead of having her just kidnap anyone was not only because it was her that was giving the book life but it was also harrys best friends sister. Beyond that, just because Draco starts talking to the book and wants to help doesn't mean he can just give power to a memory. It took a long time of deep emotional energy from ginny, a soul to soul kind of connection, before he could come out of the book. So I question whether or not Draco begging to help would allow the memory of Tom riddle to gain power like ginny did. Even if Draco stole the diary and used it (which was an awesome idea), he would have taken ginny into the chamber and it would have still been GINNY that would be dying.
    I also dont feel like Draco would have stood up to his father and given dobby a sock, even if harry just saved him. Draco is a spoiled entitled rich kid bully...hes not giving up his slave lol And Draco literally only just would have tried to help the Heir of slytherin MURDER children and harry himself. He's not gonna all of the sudden be a changed person immediately in the aftermath and think harry is just oh so cool and amazing all of the sudden. When James saved Snapes life, all it did was deepen his resentment for James...I guarantee the exact same thing would have happened here. Harry being in slytherin wouldn't change dracos entire upbringing before the first book to the point he suddenly was capable of having a change of heart as a rich spoiled 12 year old child. But, as SCB pointed out, it's inevitable that harry have an impact on Draco a little earlier than in the original stories if they are around each other so much more.
    And then in the real POA, ginny was affected by the dementors after the chamber of Secrets but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as it was for harry. The whole point was that harry had been through MUCH worse. So I just don't feel like Draco will be affected just as much as harry as if he's somehow suffered like harry has to the point he would fall off his broom too and take patronus lessons with harry. The kid wanted to literally kill classmates just a couple months before. But then again, dudley saw himself as he really was and it totally destroyed him so maybe that could have happened here too. And then for practical purposes, visibility at the quidditch match was awful. Dumbledore only just barely was able to save harry before he hit the ground with wandless magic. How is he saving both harry and Draco? And don't suggest Snape or anyone else because it's pretty clear nobody but Dumbledore was capable of saving harry, they even say something about how it would have been horrible if Dumbledore wasn't there.
    I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and regardless of how it goes, this series is awesome! This is honestly the first time I have been so adamantly against SCB on some theory or idea or anything lol I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, I just really had to express this because I feel so strongly about it. Though, as I've though a little more about it, I really don't think it's too far fetched. It's not where I would have gone with it but it's not like I know better than any other hp fan. I edited the comment a little so it doesn't come off so rude while still leaving the main points. Even though it removed their ❤️ I didn't want to give the wrong impression.

      Glad to see you are thinking about it so much! I wouldnt say Draco has exactly turned on a dime or anything or that he and harry are really besties by any means. There is just no way around that Harry being in Slytherin would affect Draco the most, and its not like he's not on a redemption arc in the main story anyway it just takes a LOT longer for him to get there.. which he still only barely does. At the end of the day its all just guess work anyway the further we get from the start of the story the bigger the changes become, and obviously we cant please everyone, but really I dont even know where the story is going - Like we arent trying to force it in any given direction just applying what we know to each scenario and then moving forward and seeing where we end up. Either way thanks for watching!

You can't really be around him and not become a better person. He really has a positive impact on so many characters, Remus, Sirius, Ron and, like you said, even Draco by the end. Maybe I am being a little too critical and need to just see where this goes before I pan it. I'm only speculating myself and not everyone will see things my way. Pewter is an alloy of 92% tin, 6-7%antimony and 1-2% copper. the tin leaves it quite malleable and easy move, the copper would spread the heat and the fluid inside the cauldron would keep the tin from melting. Iron ones would heat too quickly and hold that heat to the point of over heating the potions.

    FUN FACT FROM A PEWTERSMITH: Old time pewter had a muuch lower melting temp at only 126°f and a big contributing factor in this was they used peaf in pewter back then. Nowadays we don't use lead in our pewter for obvious safety reasons and the result of that is pewter has a higher melting temp around 175°f
