My German shepherd was 9 when his stomach twisted I spent 1200$ trying to save him. So all that see this take his advice .
We lost one at 3 years old from bloat. Tac the stomach when fixed !!!
Interesting about the two meals at night. We feed our GSD one meal between 6 and 7 pm and always add chicken or ground turkey, some fresh cooked green beans, sweet potato occasionally, to his high protein, high quality dry food. I let him have a tablespoon of yogurt sometimes during the day, when I eat mine, but never thought to give it to him with his meal. And he will eat fresh blackberries and raspberries in my garden in the spring, like a bear! Monty always saves some of his dinner to eat later that night. I may omit 1 cup of the dry food and make it official that he has a second meal later in the evening. Glad you mentioned the amount of water they drink. I keep a huge bowl of water for him and refill it at least once a day.

Don’t feed your dog raw. There is zero evidence to show its good for them, and in fact many dogs get sick.

I feed my shepherd a fully raw diet because over the last 20 yrs all my dogs have thrived from it. I've found they had better overall health and no dental problems georgous coats (less vet visits too). Issues with bloat can be reduced feeding raw meat bones by the dog developing the muscles in breaking down the bones internaly. Tho I still practice 1 hour before 1 hour after regime. The breeder of my current shepherd feeds all her dogs raw so that made it no issue but I've found that puppies fed on cibble gobble their food instead of chewing and they become adults that do the same. So I often feed frozen raw food and that has slowed her down. Kona loves frozen whole raw fish and tripe
As for cibble why no replace it with freeze-dried. It is a bit pricey but perfect for travel...I can get some really good product from New Zealand. Love Lucy she is awsome

Appreciate the 45 minute rule, I've heard about that happening to quite a few large dogs I've known, terribly sad.
After our furbaby developed an aggressive cancer we cut kibble and treats out, completely.
We changed him to Sweet Potatoe, Ground Turkey, Eggs, Acorn Squash, Pumpkin, Celery, Blueberries, Pineapple, Ginger root, Rice, Lentils, Zucchini, Broccoli (the stems only, too many florets can create painful gas), Quinoa, Turmeric (with a small pinch of black pepper to activate its benefits) Coconut oil, Lavender, Parsley, Oregano.
He was given under a month to live when first diagnosed.
He stayed with us for another 18 months after that.
18 months of running, jumping, hiking, swimming, car rides and playing.

See we used to do a raw diet but when Apollo had surgeries I actually found out he was allergic to some of the meats I was giving to him so I went for a more expensive blends.
Yes sticking to the expensive blends is a great idea.
Hahaha how cute! My GS puppy eat her own poop and my goats poop, also dirt and branches from the woods, butterflies and small insects as well. She’s pretty healthy and has lots of energy. I just give her dry food, carrots and apples.

This is a helpful video, thanks! I now have my first german shepherd puppy, and I'm trying to research what's best to feed him. Breeder had him on puppy chow. I didn't know that german shepherds had more copies of the starch digesting gene than a lot of other dogs, so I'm looking into how they do on a mix of kibble and raw! Having a hard time picking a quality large breed puppy kibble though. Suggestions?
@@hondagirl2001 I'm looking into that kibble, I'm just worried about the sweet potato. I was also looking at TotW canned but found it was cheaper for me to feed Stella and Chewy's raw. Seems like a decent brand

Hi guys. Just about to get our third GSD puppy in a few weeks. Have been doing my research on Black Hawk kibble and came across your video. It seems there’s quite a lot of negative press out there relating to two recent product recalls. Wondering if you can share your experience and whether you were impacted by the recalls. Also, what would have been your 2nd choice kibble? Many thanks!!
Hey Sean, wow a third thats awesome. Id love a second one-day. I did hear about the recall and we were not affected. These things can happen I suppose. Even the berries I buy here in Sydney a few years back got recall for hepatitis. These things happen. Now I have only used Black hawk but I am going to trial 'Kiwi Peak' as I read the reviews and was very impressed. Maybe take a look at the as well.

Are differing foods and diets okay for their norm? I know when I switch up different foods or kibble my pup will usually get stomach issues for a couple of days- I’m just afraid if I feed him too much of differing diets he’ll get sick, I’m a first time owner of a German shepherd and a big dog for that matter, so I just want to do what’s best for him and his diet .Thank you for the video too it was very informative 🙂
You shouldn't just switch right away. It's recommended that you put a little bit of the new food in the old food and faze out the old food over time while increasing the new food.
Any suggestion for my picky gsd female 10 month old? We do raw and kibble combined but she is not finishing her bowl even with less generous proportions. Thanks mate!
There no such thing a good kibble but its great to she she gets fresh foods add to her diet.

German Shepherds around that age love kibble + raw beef + 1 raw egg + vitamins. In between 2 days you give them raw kangaroo tail bone or raw lamb shanks.

Only just saw this video but,
My dog who is (supposed to be) a Chihuahua crossed with a Whippet has been fed with your typical canned dog food all her life, she is 6 and has never had any health problems or emergencies. The only problem is that we have to keep her teeth a bit more clean because they get dirty rather quick.
I hope this helps if you want/have a dog but you don't want to be careless or feed them 'incorrectly' with your run of the mill dog food.
It's what was made for dogs...just before sticking to a brand make sure it is a high quality brand and your dog actually likes it.

Very lovely video. Oddly enough, I landed right where you are with the “Everything” diet just thru education and applied common sense. But she is just now 8 months and eats roughly 4 small meals throughout the day. At what age do you recommend moving them into nighttime feedings only?

Im not expert but just introduce them slowly. Show them both affection and monitor there interaction until you're comfortable. Thats what I would do. If you have dramas make sure you see a dog trainer . 😊
I try just kibble for my pup he won't eat it so started to put abit of sweet potato and carrots in with a bit of chicken and he eats the full bowl on like 30 seconds 😂anyway to get him to just eat the kibble.?

I have hens and smaller animals.
They can be good with them, but they need to be trained not to kill them especially. When we first got mine (he’s a rescue), he had a bad habit of killing our hens, but with some training he hasn’t done so. The most he does is chase them, but he doesn’t kill anymore and protects them from rodents like raccoons.
So really, train the dog and it can be a big help!

I noticed in your videos you seem to have a bit of hypoxia which is showing up in horizontal dents in your nails. As willing as you are to take such good care of Lucy, I would be happy to pass on the info if you're interested.
The American College of Veterinary Nutrition recommends not to feed your dog a Raw Meat Based Diet. Their web page has a link that discusses all the reasons why this is a bad idea.
