JD worked his butt off, and it was an amazing show. No one in that audience knew he was filling in until Chris introduced him mid-show and revealed the fact.
Man you are absolutely killing it with all these videos and your content, Otis. Thanks for all the hard work and effort to bring this stuff to us. Great job!
Humility, musical competence, professionalism. It's great to hear from these folks and understand why they are at the top. Thanks for another great video👍
I’ve never heard this aspect of professional musicianship discussed, much less explained in such detail and in such an engaging way. Another great score Otis, thanks so much!!
Well done, JD! That is an awesome account of stepping up. And let's hear it for Zac Child's, too - what a friend to lend his brand new, Brad Paisley- gifted Strat to his mate! 🌟
I had gigs where I had to sub almost overnight, woodshed the setlist tracks for 1 or 2 days straight sunrise to sunrise but the gig paid $50 and there was no Chris Isaak. Hell yeah you take that call.
I love the irony of you two talking about Bukavec being a good conduit for stories like you two aren't also first ballot Hall of Famers in that same category.❤
Love this, life imitates art... As I sit here watching this just after getting a call to fill in for a sick friend this afternoon (albeit not at the Ryman). And I said yes. JD is a pro’s pro, no doubt! Alright, gotta get the rig together. 🎸🐶
Ha,ha…always say yes !I’m a photographer in Manchester,UK…the only times I found out I couldn’t do something, was by giving it my best shot…the shame of failure can be a good stick to beat oneself with also! Great piece.
Thanks Otis, that was one of the most insightful interviews ever, I really enjoyed the stuff you normally never hear about, like most of your videos. You are a music treasure!
Say Yes! Once again, I could listen to you guys talk for hours! I have seen Chris Isaak many times and he is just a good old boy from Stockton Ca. He is an Old School entertainer! Always a great show. I saw him at The Fillmore in SF and he said to the audience, what are you smoking out there? Rope? Keep that away from my drummer. My mom in is in the balcony?! There is footage of that Ryman show on TH-cam. Love that Strat story! Thanks again Otis! JD is such a cool cat!
I knew I’d heard this story before…. So cool to hear it from J.D! This is what music is all about, brothers helping each other out and striving for greatness!
Fantastic interview with one of the true greats on and off the instrument, whose trajectory is truly unlimited! JD Simo is a first-call A-lister for life! Note: THAT GOLD SHIMMER CURTAIN IN SOFT FOCUS IS GENIUS!!!
Great Stories well told. Really Cool Cat. Got a minute with him in Whitestown when he opened for Tab Benoit, just him and a drummer! Outstanding. Saw him at Daniel Donatos Christmas Show at The Brooklyn Bowl. A couple Roberts Western World Alumni! Told him I was going to see Sierra Hull at the Hi Fi the following week and he loved her and the Venue! Dee if your out there somewhere see if you can get him at The Hi Fi!
So, if you have never seen J.D. Simo and his trio, past or present, live, you have poked a temporary fork in your own eyeball and poured a bottle of 180 proof shine in it. He tours fairly routinely. Buy the ticket and take the ride. You will think me profusely later when you got to experience an amazing musician, no longer have eye pain, can see out of both eyes, and are now drunk on the shine you no longer have to pour on your eyeball. Seriously, he's a musical genius, and a super nice guy as well!

I'd go to a show if you were coming to Florida, but I guess that's not happening. Hey, you'll love the Cohoes Music Hall! I've performed there a few times. Absolutely incredible acoustics!
I know exactly what he means about the guitar tech. I saw Matthew Good a few years ago, and MG got handed a guitar that was in the wrong tuning. He handed it back, and was given another one, which also was in the wrong tuning. MG then said “I guess we’re not doing that song” and moved on. A very awkward moment, so much so that I remember it 7 years later.

Another great score Otis, thanks so much!!
Really enjoyed these last few interviews with JD. Super talented dude.
Well done, JD! That is an awesome account of stepping up. And let's hear it for Zac Child's, too - what a friend to lend his brand new, Brad Paisley- gifted Strat to his mate! 🌟
If it wasn't for the last minute nothing would ever get done. Another great interview, thanks Otis and J.D.
chris issak puts on a great show. he's in my top five attended concerts with harry connick jr and rev. horton heat.
I had gigs where I had to sub almost overnight, woodshed the setlist tracks for 1 or 2 days straight sunrise to sunrise but the gig paid $50 and there was no Chris Isaak. Hell yeah you take that call.
Kudos to JD Simo, the great musicians are very humble and JD is no exception. Great interview, and content as always.
Agreed.
More great stories about making music. Thanks so much!
J.D. is one cool dude! Really enjoying getting a peek into the life a true Nashville Cat. Thanks, Otis.
Good job to Otis. Otis is a humble man. This guy here is also. Really good stuff.
The unsung greats are always notable. Good interview. Thanks for this Mr. Gibbs.

Great insight on a musician’s job and how to do it. Thanks. Enjoyed it.
Impressive commitment to this craft!!!
Always say yes and figure it out later! I’m going to start doing that!! Awesome interview!
❤ you played with the model on the bottle Kenny Dale Johnson, Mr. Isaaks drummer!

I wish more people were aware of his talents.
Maybe the best interview ever !!
Practical, down to earth and humble
What more could you wish for?
What a pro.
Lot of great advice and insight here. Thanks for this.
JD is like Uncle Larry. No BS... Just lives to play the guitar & tell it like it is.

This was a fun one to see and I love his work ethic. Thanks.
He opened for Tab Benoit and Anders Osborne in San Diego a few weeks ago. Awesome show.
Thanks to you brother Otis for the healthy distractions. We need them so badly!
JD is as cool as it gets.

Sounds like it was fun
