I'm old enough to have seen Duane play three times before he passed....he was special and channeled the music from a higher plane....he's the reason I play guitar today....
Mm😢😢😢😢
Oʻo
Never ever be another player with the passion Duane had to learn how to make a guitar talk at such a young age. That's my opinion and I loved how JD broke this down.
Derek trucks would be the only one come close
@@SexyplexiGT Yes and though I never got to see Duane, I have saw Derek a few times since he was 12. Imo, he's the best player alive.
@@robertwoodward9231 yes sir 1000000% agree
Jesse Ed Davis!Guitarists owe so much to that quiet legend.
An incredible talent he was. He lost his life too soon..
I saw JD the for the first time at Robert's in 2011. Of course, the show stopper was "Ghost Riders". I've seen others play that song in that place, but JD totally owned it. The risks he was willing to take, sometime to Don Kelley's amazement, was a sight to behold. What a player.
Brought a tear to hear him reference Twiggs and Skoots Lyndon. Skoots was a dear friend from years of Dregs and Steve Morse shows and he is missed terribly. I've got a pic of Skoots and Morse's guitar tech, Tommy Alderson, with the two Les Pauls J D is referencing here on a hotel room bed with Duane's daughter, Galadrielle. And J D is right: it';s the driver, not the car. Steve Morse had one of the Les Pauls for a long time and used it on some of his recordings. He feared the potential theft of it so muchy while he was on the road that he actually cut a hole in the drywall of his studio and would encase the guitar and case in the wall and seal it up.
Love The Love Otis that JD Somo shows for Duane Allman’s 57’ Gibson Les Paul Gold Top and watched Duane Play Slide four feet from the stage one month prior to The Filmore East Album being recorded in 1971 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio with My Twin Sisters, Bonnie & Connie! He Played Slide on “Statesboro Blues” that was a turning point in my musical career! Saw Jimi Hendrix & The Experience at Vets Memorial Auditorium in May 1970 in Columbus, Ohio, too!
I'm glad more people are discovering JD. He's an incredibly gifted guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is a must-see live act (and props to his amazing drummer Adam, too)
I can completely back up everything JD says about the esteemed Richard Brent, just a stellar human in all aspects. When we played Macon @ Cox Capital Theater,Richard brought down Duane’s Goldtop for Marc Ford to play,& then invited us down to the Big House for a private tour the following morning. Also got to meet Kirk West,James Calemine & Mama Louise Hudson on that run. Pretty big deal for a lifelong Allman Bros freak like me. Thanks for this Otis
daaamn great interview you guys I was riveted here 🔥 ❤
I recently saw and met JD at the Fillmore in CA. Great player and cool dude!
I got to see JD at the Irvine Lake Blues Festival in southern California, the mc said he was 17. He played an incredibal show playing Hendrix and SRV
@@donmerlinfa hey,I played that fest with Mighty Mojo Prophets!!
@@michaelmalone306 used to go Irvine Lake and Doheny festivals pretty much ever year.
@@donmerlinfa I went to Long Beach Blues Fest damn near every year from ‘83-mid 2000’s
LBBF, Doheny Blues... Damn, those were good fests back in the day!
@@michaelummel4358 don’t forget Bernie Pearl’s Big Time BluesFest @ Gemrig Park for a few years there in the 90’s,that was a REAL good fest!!
Top guitarist to me in the world what are geniuses put that band together
Loved it. It's the magic that's the thing, for sure, for sure. Seems like such a great guy and I'll stop by a show. Maybe in Macon.
Once again, an introduction to someone great, by Otis Gibbs. Here I go, digging deep on another one I’ve missed. Thank you, Otis, for opening doors and windows to enrich the world of a music lover, on the outside looking in.
What a great interview! Duane was truly an inspirational player and bandleader. All the original Allmans made huge contributions and brought out the best in each other. Thanks Otis!
I've enjoyed the heck out of hearing JD talk about his experiences and viewpoint on things.
He impresses me more each time l hear him speak- makes me want to play guitar with him- and l haven’t really wanted that in decades…
What a great interview. Well said JD - i loved it.
Great insights from a very talented player...
Thanks for the interview, from a Skydog fan. Had the good fortune to see/hear JD Simo 3-4 times at Robert’s Western World back in the day. Simo was amazing!
Wonderful interview!
Once again your channel has introduced me to another gem of a musician and person.
This one is particularly cool because I am from and live in Macon, Georgia.
The crappy bar that J. D. references is, more than likely, historic Grant's Lounge. That's another story to its own.
Thank you, Otis!
Many of us have made a life adjustment at age 25 as our pre-fontal cortex of our brain is not fully developed until then. To be able to catch that wind and sail with it is our work to be done.
Tragedy can lurk for any number of reasons with fate playing its card to place humility an outcome too.
Great seeing JD on here!
Enjoyed this interview. What a bright & articulate guy. Impressive. Informative.
Great series, Otis. Big fan of JD. Keep rockin, bro 👍🏻
Awesome! Thanks Otis and JD!
delightful interview. simo is very articulate. love his approach. started checking his posts out about a year ago. thanks otis. hi amy.
JD is such an interesting guy. Great video, Otis!
Also, the Shure Vocal Master PA head sitting to JD's left brings back wonderful memories of a simpler (and quieter) time...
Long live DA!
Thank you Otis
So Potent ! Excellent interview !
Wow !!
Obsession makes the great players
I don’t think it’s important to the story.. but I remember the Brothers playing in Wildwood Convention Center.. but not in AC… both in the same area more or less..
I love hearing anything about the band.. now I gotta check out JD…✌🏼
I can absolutely identify with the "channeling" concept. Most of the songs I've "written" have been more given to me or received from that ethereal somewhere than anything I've done intentionally.
With all due respect. There are kids today who are as incredible as artists back then. We talk about those legendary artists with the hindsight and age that comes with time.
I love Duane Allman's playing, but there were Hawaiian electric slide players in the thirties that were absolutely amazing slide players, playing on a lap steel.
👍🎧👍🎧👍
I have muttonchops on my face because of Duane.
agreed and ah yes the greta white buffalo in our souls!
I'm pretty sure that the Darkburst is the only one with the original pickups. The Goldtop and cherry burst definitely don't.
Duane Allman was the greatest Electric Slide guitarist and Lowell George to a lesser extent
The song Twiggs Approved by the Dixie Dregs……wondering if that’s the same Twiggs mentioned here?
Johnny winter the coolest
The greatest, indeed. No disrespect to black blues artists or monsters like J.J. Cale, Duane, Dickey, or some overrated ones (not taking away from their obvious talent but still...) like SRV.
he's one of a select few dudes that can ramble on and on while ceasing to become neither vexatious nor ennuying.
Did he forget the Fillmore East shows? Those were not small shows. I’m glad he mentioned Davis. He never gets enough credit. Also he kind of leaves out the rest of the band. Greg Allman was no slouch and neither was Betts. Those songs didn’t compose themselves. I agree with the comments about “boomers”. When people from my era wanted to learn something they had to dig deep and work at it. No TH-cam at your finger tips, no google . The thing that was special about players like Bloomfield and Duane was the fact that they played with feeling and not just trying to impress with speed or flash.
