I just bought one of these a couple months ago on Marketplace, serviced it, changed the oil and spark plug, replaced all the vacuum hoses and fuel lines, starts and runs like a champ, pushed my boat with me and my buddy over 10 mph. Uses minimal fuel, less than my previous Evinrude 5 hp outboard. Very pleased with it, air cooled, no water pump to fail, very simple engine to maintain.

Have you seen the vids where they pipe the exhaust under water? It quiets them down alot.

Excellent boat motor. I went up a flooded river & current was unbelievable. Has allot of torc for small motor. 12 ft John boat about 17 mph with two people. Over 20 with 1 person & gear. You need to run it in water though, still cools the shaft.

I have had mine since the 90's. It must be a thing with them, to take 3 pulls to start them. I cleaned and started mine, today. 1 choke pull, 2 unchoked, and it starts. just like my mower. as long as you don't leave fuel in the float bowl. and change the oil every once in a while, it will run forever. I fish all day on about a gallon of gas. you won't win any races, but it will go and go and go. I wish it had a clutch on the motor to lessen the shock of putting it in gear. like a mini bike. so at idle, it won't jolt the boat when you put it in gear, and then smoothly accelerate.

Do u still have it, I get one from a friend, he bought it at yard sale for 50$ would not run. No spark, got new coil, ran great for 12 yrs, getting low on compression. I've heard you can bolt on a new 7 hp. eng. Has anyone heard or done this?

Not a flathead, the 5 HP Briggs outboard is OHV (Overhead Valve)

Have almost the same exact motor, I bought about year ago. When i bought it, the guy started it, no problems. brought it home, stored it for about a month or so, went into shed to show my Dad the motor, I started it no problem! Stored it again for about two or three months, went back, tried to pull start it, and the pull cord is jammed!?? Or will just not pull out? It pulls out about 5-6", but that's it, not enough to start and turn it over! Any ideas what I did wrong? Or what I need to do to get it going again? Ran awesome the couple times I did start it up, but now, pull cord doesn't pull. I appreciate any help/recommendations, Thank you!

If it is air cooled then why do you have it in a barrel full of water?

Prop resistance so it doesn't burn up the motor spinning freely?

What if you run it in neutral? Blew that theory out of the water no pun intended.

I just bought a 14 foot boat with this same motor. But it needs a tune up. What kind of oil does it need? Sparks plug? Or what do you recommend for a good tune up. Thanks in advance
