One of my favorite things about this is how happy Merle Haggard looks for Jerry Herman, whom he had probably met for the first time that afternoon. You can't imagine two musical artists more different!

I just love Jerry Herman's blasé look until the Gay Men's Chorus comes out at the end and then he just clutches his heart. It's beautiful to see all those around him like Oprah and Merle Haggard and Sir Paul light up at his delight because he was so touched. I loved the previous commenters observation on Merle Haggard-another great! It goes to show that people from very different backgrounds can appreciate each other and what they bring to this world :)

Thinking how happy Sir Paul is -- knowing he owns the publishing to so much of Jerry's great catalogue! What a year of honorees that was!

I was thinking the same thing. Sir Paul & his MPL Communications may not own Lennon & McCartney but he's certainly made a bundle owning most of Jerry Herman (among a lot of others too).

@@bblegacy He owns the publishing for many musicals -- including A CHORUS LINE and ANNIE. He also owns a lot of "college" songs -- Like The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. Wise investments!

What is the name of the Male Dancers Group who danced with Chita Rivera, Carol Channing, and Matthew Morrison ?

I'm so mad they didn't use Drag queens for the lacage song "we are what we are"!! That was such a wasted moment to have a short version with a kid choir. I'm sure Jerry would have appreciated seeing it with queens, it was arguably his most popular show excluding hello dolly. So why not do it justice ??

I think it is better because those children were most likely representing the lgbt+ youth. Also quite a few look to be adults as well.

@@jamesmoyner7499 It doesn't make any difference if they were LGBT people or not. It's the fact that it's the whole nation honoring Mr. Herman and that song and its meaning to everyone. We should be celebrating the fact if straight kids are also in effect, saying, "I understand and I want to sing that too." Every single one of us suppresses something genuine within us to keep other people happy with us, don't we?

It takes a lot of nerve and even more talent to write a "Title" song for a show and Jerry Herman wrote THREE of them for his three shows "Hello, Dolly!", "Mame" and "Dear World". The first two songs were colossal hits that crossed over into mainstream "acoustic pop", and the last one is by no means an inferior tune either, even though the show "Dear World" was a Broadway box office failure in the late 1960s. Ever since I saw a full scale production of it in 1980 I've wondered how on Earth the show failed on Broadway, and it's an incredible musical score from beginning to end. Personally, I think it's Herman's musically strongest score from cover to cover. I've also thought that as a show "Dear World" has been totally relevant to the modern the post-70's world too, with its themes of moral and environmental degradation, political corruption and industrialist greed, and a full-blown revival of it without any changes (like cutting the orchestra to half its size, as is now common) would be a guaranteed smash hit now. Maybe it didn't do well in 1967 because back then maybe it was just too far ahead of its time, even if the show is set in 1880's Paris when the world was changing greatly from its past as much as it is again now; and largely because of the same circumstances.
