So Hey Bulldog is one of my top Beatles songs. They have so many that it's hard to rank them, but Hey Bulldog is very unique and must be recognized as one of their many influential songs on the rock genre. For those who don't know this tune enjoy this experience! Great bass line, great vocals and I love the lyrics. "If you're lonely you can talk to me!" I also love the change in keys from Major to Minor - very unique for that day. The story behind this tune is shrouded in mystery. Apparently it was just something they threw together during one of their recording sessions without much preparation... Original lyrics by John were Hey Bullfrog! Paul changed it to Bulldog and John liked that so much that he howled and barked during the only recording of the song ever captured, before they moved on to more planned recordings. This is essentially Paul and John writing a song on the fly. Amazing.
@@jnagarya519 Never heard about that. This song came together very fast in the studio, so I find the idea that the lyrics were scrutinized very unlikely. What is likely was John taking the piss out of some journalist...
For the true Beatles fans, those who grew up listening to them and watching them grow musically with every new record we love all their songs, each one has a meaning and a memory attached to it. Their rise really began with A Hard Day's Night, the first record with music composed entirely by Lennon and McCartney and from then on only their own music and Harrison's and even Ringo. The Beatles were geniuses, one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. They will live forever 🙏 We just love the Beatles.
I was blessed to grow up with the Beatles. I was nervously clutching my Capitol 45 of "I Want to Hold Your Hand"/"I Saw Her Standing There" (with the picture sleeve) at age five in February 1964, watching their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan, and realizing that they were even more exciting to see on TV than they were to hear on the radio or on records. I remember each year of elementary school by which Beatles records came out that year. The Beatles also prompted a renaissance of pop and rock music from 1964 through the early '70s -- incredible writing, playing, production. I was blessed to hear all of it. It was incredibly VARIED. Sinatra and country records got onto the Top 40, along with rock, soul, Motown, surf, instrumentals, folk-rock. It was a great education!
For most bands this would be a huge hit. For The Beatles this was just another non-single off one of their albums Could suggest most their catalogue! Maybe check out Get Back next?

I didn't hear Hey Bulldog until a lot later in my Beatles journey, having grown up in the 90s listening to my dad's records and of course they were on classic rock radio constantly, but Hey Bulldog just didn't get play or recognition at the time and I discovered it once I had the full discog on my computer well into my 20s. The booming bass and driving piano makes it one of their most unique songs and while it's hard to pick favorite Beatles songs (they're nearly all good or great!) Hey Bulldog definitely ranks! The Beatles are so good that most artists would be thrilled to make one song as good as their deepest cut, and they did it over 200 times.

Lovely bit of Paul "Simping" there but he didn't actually overdub his bass for this song. The basic track was John on piano. Paul bass. George guitar and Ringo drums. The only instrument McCartney overdubbed on "Hey Bulldog" was a tambourine .
@@jeffmcrae795 You implied it. Or at least, what you wrote would lead people to infer it. For example, Paul McCartney never claimed to have written the riff for this song. Paul McCartney is one of the greatest bass players in the world. Come Together is the ULTIMATE showcase and it’s John being bluesy as hell. The new cartoon video is the best- it really reflects the music perfectly. ❤.
One of my faves. Hugely under rated song. One of their "throwaway" songs from the Yellowsubmarine movie soundtrack. Paul's killer bass. They were at heart a rock n roll band who loved doing rockers like this.
Yes exactly! The journey you're going on is so incredibly important. I've been a musician since my very first memories. But not only have I played in bands and composed things and recorded things and collaborated with people and all of that stuff, including a modern classical symphony, I also consider myself to be a musicologist. I'm deeply in love with the evolution of music and music itself, which means not only do I like to play music, I also like to listen to it. Although I usually do so from the point of a musician. You rattled off a list of the disparate genres that you're exploring, and I'm so impressed. I just think that is an absolute and deeply meaningful gift that you are giving to yourself. ❤❤❤❤❤ Hey Bulldog is one of my all-time favorite Beatles songs, and like Lynyrd Skynyrd and CCR, The Beatles are one of those bands that I literally like every song they ever did. I have deeply loved it since I first encountered it in Junior high. And the message in it is just so cool. And I love when all the guys are riffing at the end as if they are talking to a bulldog, and then they all just devolve into making dog sounds and laughing maniacally, and it just puts a huge smile on my face every time. 😂😂😂
The chord sequence on the “You Can Talk To Me” section is brilliant. It’s a basic minor chord, and then adding one note that goes up one semitone every bar creates an increasing level of tension that dissolves perfectly into the main riff. So good.
I'm so appreciate your reaction to Hey Bulldog. I'm a first generation Beatles fan. Growing up with them. Take a deep dive, friend. Plenty of interesting music from The Beatles. ❤
Speaking of MUST HEAR Classics that hit different,, The Guess Who "Shakin' All Over" (Skelton Dance video a MUST!!) 🔥❤️🔥 (Original by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates 1960)
Perhaps my favorite Beatles video as it actually comes from their making of this song, not to mention it's just a good tune in general. Thanks for the reaction.
That part with the barking at the end was spontaneous. Paul started and John was able to join in to create what you heard here. The chemistry between them was simply amazing
The opening piano riff is fire. The story is they went into the studio to record a promo video for "Lady Madonna", but figured that while they were there, they might as well record a new track - this is the result! :)
Yo bro thanks for this reaction it was so cool. The song was recorded on February 11, 1968, way before The White Album recording sessions. There's another song recorded in February 1968: Lady Madonna, this was the last single recorded under Capitol/Parlophone record labels. From Hey Jude onward, they decided to record under Apple Corps.
I have LOVED "HEY BULLDOG" ever since it was released! It is in my top 5 Beatles songs. I have been a fan since the very beginning when I was 16 years old when first heard "I Want To Hold Your Hand" on the day it was released on U.S. radio, Dec. 26, 1963.
This is the only video footage showing the Beatles actually recording a song in the studio, outside of a 5 second snippet of John playing rhythm guitar to Paul's song And I Love Her. The Beatles only made a few video clips to their songs, there's the songs from both the Hard Day's Night and Help movies, then We Can Work It Out, I Feel Fine, Paperback Writer, Rain, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, the songs from the Magical Mystery Tour movie, then Hey Bulldog, and lastly, the rooftop concert and a couple of others from the Let It Be movie. Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head that the Beatles themselves actually did. Others have been fabricated in the years since. I may have not remembered one or two, if so, I hope someone will mention which ones.

Lovely bit of Paul "Simping" there but he didn't actually overdub his bass for this song. The basic track was John on piano. Paul bass. George guitar and Ringo drums. The only instrument McCartney overdubbed on "Hey Bulldog" was a tambourine .
@@scottandrewbrass1931 I didn't say he
did, though🤔
@@jeffmcrae795 You implied it. Or at least, what you wrote would lead people to infer it.
For example, Paul McCartney never claimed to have written the riff for this song. All he literally said was that he was there when it was written, but from the way he expressed it, many people have inferred that he claims to have written it and have become quite irate at his latest "revisionism".
Glad you appreciate the baseline. Sometimes I think people forget what an incredible innovator Paul McCartney was on
Bass.
So glad you’re savoring Beatles’ brilliance! I think their discography will continue to blow your mind!
Thank you, Drew, for the recommendation. A fantastic song to jam to.
What a good song
A true banger from the Beatles. Amazing. I love how the chords and tension builds on the "You can talk to me" bit.
Hey Bulldog is stellar, especially given its history
Hi Polo, love your reactions. The Beatles and the Stones will be your deepest rabbit holes. Not just because the catalog is huge in both cases but rather the quality of 99 % of said catalogs are ridiculously good.
One of my favourite "other" Beatles tracks is "Why don't we do it in the road" from The White Album.
Warm greetings from the cold Canadian Rockies. Take care, be well.
Yes! Another of McCartney's screaming songs. I love that stuff! 🙂
I have never heard this Beatles song before! Great reaction ❤
GREAT !!!!... we want MORE..❤❤❤❤
One of their most UNDERRATED tracks ! This is Absolute Lightening Captured in a bottle !!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Underrated? Not once was this song ever underrated. Maybe by younger crowds.
Hi Polo greetings from Liverpool England 🇬🇧 The Hometown of The Beatles The Fab 4!!! I am so glad that you have discovered how good The Beatles are and you have gone down the rabbit hole of Beatles songs.
You should check out The Beatles Song DONT LET ME DOWN from there Famous RoofTop Performance in London and this is a legendary Live performance that shows how good The Beatles were Live.
One of my favorite Beatle Songs!!!❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 and Helter SKELTER..Omg!🎉🎉🎉
One of my favorites and WOW I can really hear the Bass on this recording. Freaking amazing and genius choice of Bass phrasing. Paul!! Only seen one other reaction to this. Keep ahead of your competition and check out
NOWHERE MAN!! It's on The Yellow Submarine album and movie. Might be a video?? 🔊 MARCO!! I'm keeping an eye out now!! Great Reaction! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Hey Bulldog is one of my all-time favorite Beatles songs, and like Lynyrd Skynyrd and CCR, The Beatles are one of those bands that I literally like every song they ever did.
So wonderful to see someone enjoying and literally absorbing this underplayed and underrated Beatles musical marvel. God Bless!
I fell in love with this song when I first heard it in 1967. I could never understand its obscurity because I think it's one of their very best.
Thank you for this. Hey Bulldog has always been one of my favorites 👍👍
I'm 77 and have been diggin heavy on the BEATLES since I was 16 yrs old when they first arrived in our brains!.
When you heard the dogs bark we actually saw the ghost of a smile.
Very Well put ! That's what it's about making your soul smile ! THAT'S a good reason why the Beatles are timeless !
A great underrated song of theirs is "And Your Bird Can Sing." Give it a whirl!
Speaking of MUST HEAR Classics that hit different,, The Guess Who "Shakin' All Over"
(Skelton Dance video a MUST!!) 🔥❤️🔥
(Original by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates 1960)
You're on an amazing journey with the greatest band of all time. Subscribed.
From the docs I’ve seen it seems they did that a lot…just went in and threw everything out there no matter how it sounded…very creative.
“No-where Man..Oh Darling..Come Together..Warm Gun,
So much, so many..ALL of them..even Maxwells Silver Hammer!
That is a guilty pleasure lol.
Beatles were awesome at getting in a groove and just staying with it. True musical beasts. ❤❤❤
Genius is what genius does. This proves once and for all that The Beatles *WAS* a rock'n'roll band.
Soooo happy to see you reacting to the Beatles. Oh, Darling will blow you away!!!
Always loved Hey Bulldog! And Old Brown Shoe!
I had to double take you without a hat. Happy New Year Polo! Love the Beatles reactions.
