Frank Lampard On Lad Culture, Chelsea Fallout & Nepotism In Football

  • Our guest today is Chelsea and England legend, Frank Lampard.
As a footballer, his record speaks for itself.
But, his career as player-turned-manager is a knot of competing narratives. A Romford-boy-done-good, a manager dealt a string of poor cards, or a player propelled by Premier League plutocracy.
As always, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
// For many, Frank Lampard's career starts with a now infamous fan forum, where his uncle Harry Redknapp makes a very bold public statement. "He will go right to the very top." It's a moment that symbolises much in Lampard's career. Yes, he reached the heights. Yes, his personal relationships were an integral part of that success. Be it his uncle managing West Ham where he got his big break, or catapulting into one of the biggest jobs in football management at Chelsea off the back of only one previous manager role (at Derby). Frank reveals in this conversation that the fan berating Redknapp was actually the uncle of one of the players let go to make room for him in the squad.
Lampard would go on to dominate as a player, part of England "golden generation" that nonetheless never realised their full potential on the international stage. The squad, and their WAGs, were hounded by the press at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and are seen as one of the pinnacles of the lad culture that defined the Noughties in Britain. This year England return to Germany for the Euros, their first major tournament in the country since '06. How do the two teams compare, in footballing terms and the culture that surrounds Gareth Southgate's dressing room?

Die hard Chelsea fan. I love Frank and always will. When he got his first appointment, I was honestly surprised due to his limited managerial experience but was deligthed with the superb job he did in his first season, especially when we the transfer ban. It was a triumph
Sadly the second season and the season he returned, it just wasnt the same and will never fault him because he cares about the club and always had it's best interest at heart and because Chelsea aren't a patient club. Look at Arteta and Arsenal, they gave him time. I do think one day he will be the right manager for us and hopefully he would have grown alot more then and wish him the absolute best.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I think he is good enough for us now. As you say, the first season with the transfer ban was good considering, exciting attacking football (Tammy was great, can't believe he was sold). I think the second season although the league was not great he paved the way for the Champions League success and I don't think any manager, even Pep, could've salvaged anything from that interim spell with the mess we were in (still are a little). The vast majority of Chelsea fans (perhaps myself included) have become spoilt with the hire and fire success, we all say we want stability and 'this manager deserves more time' but then as soon as a bad run of form hits we all want them out. The truth is we have probably had many managers that given time would have turned it around they just weren't given the opportunity because of this craving for instant success we've had. Of course we all love Frank and I do believe he falls into the category of a manager that could have pushed on given a chance, but I must say I think that about Tuchel too, even though he followed on from Frank I thought he did an incredible job when the sanctions hit and there was so much uncertainty. I thought the way he handled everything was amazing, but then he was fired something like 6 games into the season and we were sitting in 6th place, we've not been that high in the table since.

That was a fantastic watch. Thank you for it. I'm a massive Chelsea fan, I love Frank, always have, always will.
Unfortunately people in football are very reactive, especially some Chelsea fans. He did a great job in his first season when we finished top 4 & made the cup final. And even next season he was doing alright when we went on a run of games, were near the top of the table, qualified easily from the Champions League group. He came back in as an interim manager in a very difficult situation. I don't think there is one manager in the world who could have flipped that situation around because we were in such a huge mess.
I think there is a good manager in him, the next job needs to be one with a stable environment. I am absolutely sure he'll succeed. And I'm sure he'd make an excellent Director of Football if he wants to go that route.
    Always rooting for him.
    Super Frank!
    Then, now, forever.

As an Everton fan, Frank was one of the first managers for a long time that gave a feeling of cohesion between club and fans and really seemed to get what the fans wanted and expected from our team. He managed to unify a very divided fan base after Benitez and gave the belief back that the club hadn’t fully been lost.
Despite the difficulties, there are some good memories under Frank and the feelings after that Palace game are indescribable.
Above all, he always seems like a great bloke and hope he has a successful career as a manager in future, as he deserves it. Any fan base will buy into him as a manager and in the right set up he could be a top manager.

Lampard is an example to Sports people past, present and future, he has depth and is very switched on.
He should be proud of his achievements, we could all go on about his Club Career but one thing I specifically remember about his England career is that he had Caps here and there for 3 years or so but got more established in 2003.
He scored a trademark goal at Ipswich in a friendly against Croatia and from that night on I said to my dad he is a regular now in the National team, just turned 25, good age, he has moved to another level now! Well Done 👏

I think Frank has done good so far as a manager. I think he will be tops in the next 5-10 years. Remember he kept Chelsea in top 4 in his first season with a transfer ban. His second spell at Chelsea wasn't good because we know the circumstances surrounding the club. The same goes with Everton and the FFP. I think he should start with a team in the championship and move upward. Even a team like Forest should've taken him.

I cannot stand the way in which it’s just taken as a given that everyone HAS to have a social media account. To say that players have it harder now purely because they choose to log into an app on their smart phone is just ridiculous. Same with all the racist abuse, if you went to the same pub every night and got racially abused knowing the management allow it to happen, at what point do you become an idiot for continuing to go there
