Tourette's syndrome is a neurological condition and disability which causes involuntary movements called tics. I use my platforms on social media such as TikTok, TH-cam and Instagram to advocate and raise awareness for the condition and show what it is like living with a disability as a teen in school.
My name is Zara Beth (zeezee25 on tiktok) and I post videos about tics, tic disorders and what its like to be a teen living with Tourette's syndrome, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and a seizure disorder (NEAD/NES).
I show what its like having tics and Tourettes in class and in school and college, vlog, and I also bake, do other challenges and answer all your questions in Q and A videos.
I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user so I show what life looks like using various mobility aids and how needs change from day to day!
I am also a musician! My newest release is my first single (original song) called "She's Mine" which is now available on all streaming services - I sing and play piano, guitar, ukulele and I write, produce, mix and master all my own songs and content myself!

I'm so glad your head teacher had good sense and reported her. I only hope that supply teacher studies up a bit. As a teacher and, in the past, having worked as an instructor with people on the spectrum, varying degrees of mental wellness and other abilities, my first and most important self education is knowing and understanding my students.
If I'm a supply teacher for a class I don't normally teach, I take each student at their word.

Honestly some people who work in childcare/teaching really do think they know everything about every conditions because they did like one course on autism once. I see it a lot in my child development class, people just being so confidentially incorrect about different learning disabilities, health conditions, disorders etc

This is why it is so, so, so important for people (especially teachers) to at least try and educate themselves when it comes to neurodiversity and other disorders!
My mom is a 7th grade math teacher. One day, she came home and was telling me and my dad about a student who had been acting awful that day. He had been yelling and screaming, telling people not to touch him and generally having a meltdown. She tells us the story, and as I’m sitting there, I go, “wow, this really sounds like autism.” My dad had the same thought. Now, my mom has and will continue to have autistic students in her class. She knows who they are, and she has a special ed teacher next to her classroom to help her get them the help they need.
However, it did not occur to her that this student might need to be evaluated for autism because he wasn’t her idea of autism. She was used to autistic students acting and sounding a certain way, so it never even crossed her mind.
I see people do this constantly in my daily life. I see it with my best friend, other teachers, other students, it’s everywhere. I believe that if they educated themselves on the topic, it would be better for everyone.
Remember, just because someone isn’t your idea of a disorder doesn’t mean they don’t have it!

In the US, if you have any kind of disability all of your teachers recieve information so things like this don't happen.
The only way it can happen is if there's a substitute teacher who isn't well-informed.

Correction: a sub who doesn't read what info they're given on their students. They're informed, but they might not pay attention to the information.
There's another way though, which happened to me a few times, where the teacher thinks they know better or are above the law, or otherwise doesn't _care_ about what the students are dealing with or what accommodations they need.
One teacher in HS didn't give me the accommodations I needed and had in my file as IEP approved, decided I was a horrible student, picked on me literally multiple times per day, and I ended up leaving the class entirely and reporting the teacher (who couldn't be replaced mid-year, so I was moved to a different class). I expect that, had I stayed and not reported him, I'd've gotten an F for sure. It only took three days for the teacher to push for me to be suspended for "bad behavior" (a move which backfired on him once I rephrased what the behavior was from his explanation of "not listening to directions and being a disruption to the rest of class" to "requesting and making use of the accommodations listed in my IEP").
But in the replacement class I was the best student in the class (according to the teacher, I was both the most helpful, insightful, and creative student he'd had in over a decade, and also the one who got the best grades that year)... and that's despite taking 3~5 minute breaks to play games on my phone/laptop or read a book whenever I needed to reset my brain (2~3 times per hour, generally, on a bad day it'd be more like equal time working vs taking a break).
I can still listen to a lecture while playing the games I'd use for these breaks, that's not an issue. During individual work time, if we were given an hour to do something, I'd work for 20 minutes, take a break for 5 minutes, finish the rest in 10, and still have 25 minutes to chill while everyone else finished their work. I was doing it in all my classes (except 10th grade physics and 9th grade math, I'll get to that later), and except for 9th grade bio (group projects and labs don't do well when you're absent often due to chronic illnesses) and 10th grade world history (history, or rote memorization in general, was never my strong suit, but I still managed a B there), I got As in every class. (Well, technically I got an F in spanish, but that's bc the system didn't have a way to not list a foreign language class when I was taking French at a community college instead)
As for why I didn't do it in the two classes I listed, the reasons differ: In 9th grade math, I finished most of my projects within a day of us getting the specs sheets, and spent most of every day after that doing whatever - sometimes it'd be work for other classes, other times I'd spend a full hour straight playing games. As for physics... well, we didn't have a competent physics teacher, she was a bio major. She's all they could find though, so she's what we got. Because physics has always been one of my favorite subjects to study on my own, even in elementary and middle school, I ended up helping out a lot and was basically the de facto teacher with the official teacher being the TA, though I was listed as being a TA instead. I didn't have time to take the breaks, and it wore on me a lot, but it was fun and helped my classmates, so I kept doing it.

When I was 9 I had a guy come in to teach us PE. I had a small vocal tic (I started having full blown tourette's since I was 15) it was literally just a small hum at that point and he shouted in the hall 'everyone ignore Alex and that STUPID NOISE' I walked straight out of there and to the heads office to report him. The bullying from my peers had just stopped or gotten better at least because the teacher had told them to stop but that confrontation with the 'cool' 19 year old who taught them football took it right back to how it started :(

It's horrible of the teacher to not slow down to understand someone. Since she had to ask your name, I'm assuming she was a substitute teacher? Shouldn't the school be responsible for informing teachers what they may experience from students in each class!?! Yes they should, but schools vary a lot whether they do or not. When I was training to be a teacher some teachers nearly gave me too much info about the kids (like sheesh let me form my own opinion) while others left me to find out for myself... I am surprised that no one told the sub about Zara though since Tourette's is going to be a lot more obvious than dyslexia, for example. My school now are extremely good for keeping us all informed on how all the kids are doing.

I get stress ticks pretty badly, I don’t know what they’re from but when I am stressed, anxious, or feeling strong emotions my neck cocks a lot and I flail my hands. People look at me weird and I don’t really know what to do

I had an Autistic Friend at school, and despite the fact that it was fairly obvious, she got into trouble with teachers who were clearly oblivious. I stood up for her once when she got told off for talking, and fortuntely the teacher was quite understanding.

I always imagine tourettes as the silent half of the brain throwing pebbles at the language part's keyboard.
Just minding it's own business, the language part is being all suave and THAT'S NOT MY BISCUIT.
    Language part is like 🤨

It can be hard to deal with a disability and not be believed bc u don't look a certain way.. the ignorance can be damaging to ur identity. Helps to not care about what people think or believe of u. For me, my healing came thru my identity in Christ.
    Love and blessings

Wow it’s very interesting tics every now and then. I don’t know about episodes do you have dreams is that why it’s called and episode? Also I have a similar one to you I have autism I can’t handle lots of people and I talk randomly because I need to. People need to speak slow as well. I get bored really easy to😊
