I was in Stockholm in 1969 and saw the Wasa when it was being sprayed constantly I believe with glycerin to preserve it. Another must see if you go to Oslo Norway is the Viegland Sculpture Park. I think Ashley should get a Nobel prize for outstanding sweetness!
5:32 - 1) Dynamite was not really intended for warfare, but mainly for civil development. 2) The scientist Alfred Nobel's main focus wasn't on the peace or litterature prices, but rather on the fysics, chemistry and medicine prices. 3) Alfred Nobel did not start the Swedish Academy (the King Gustav III did, in the 1700s). They were just asked to handle his litterature price.
Fun fact about the Swedish king. The king or queen is head of state but has basically no political power. But as you mentioned, Svenska Akademin (that decide the Nobel prize winner in literature) got caught in a major turmoil when the #metoo movement gained traction in Sweden. Previously the members of the Academy were chosen for life and could not formally leave their chair according to the statues of 1786. The crisis led to that about half of the 18 members refused to participate in the meetings and the statues needed to be changed. And the only person who had the formal power to change the statues was our king, and so he did.
10 years after lifting Vasa a Hanseatic cog from 1370 was salvaged and preserved like Vasa. It´s now the main attraction of the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum (German Maritime Museum) at Bremerhaven, Germany.
I just visited the Vasa and the Nobel but the royal apartment look amazing wish I could say I visited all three.
As a huge museum nerd myself, this has to be one of my favorite nordic videos so far. I've been loving the whole series though, Sweden and Finland are close to the top of my bucket list and seeing how much you seem to enjoy yourselves just makes me more excited to hopefully visit these countries someday.

Last fun fact. The Vasa ship was built to only have 1 gun deck. But the king wanted the ship to have more and heavier cannons so he ordered 2 gun decks against the shipbuilders advices. But you could not say no to the king and still have a life in Sweden so they built the second gun deck. The result was a top heavy ship that sunk. Gustav II Adolf the king died 4 years later in Lützen Germany. He is seen as the faunder of "Stormakts Sverige". (Sweden as a big military power in 1600-1700) They called him "den moderna krigsföringens fader" (The father of modern warfare)
A similar story to the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's flagship that sank in the Solent, that was carrying too much top hamper by being over gunned. Only half the ship survived by being buried in the silt, it was salvaged in the 70's and is now on display along with hundreds of objects recovered with it ranging from canons, canon balls to sailors shoes, bows and arrows and clothing.
They had to take out some ballast after they added the second (lower) gun deck close to water line on Kings orders, so that made the ship even more unstable. At the time, ships had to go through a stability test where crew ran from side to side in order to make the ship to roll. They had to abandon this stability test as they were afraid that the ship would take water in through the lower gun deck gun ports. Well, this is what happened in real life when the first gust hit the ship. The Baltic sea has so low a salt content that a shipworm eating would does not survive in it. Hence the ship was preserved throughout the centuries for us to admire. Amazing museum!

If you’re going to Norway I really recommend a similar museum like the Vasa museum: Fram museum in Oslo. That ship isn’t as old as Vasa but you are allowed aboard on it. Great museum. 👍

The next monarch in Sweden will be Victoria, she married her personal trainer who became Prince Daniel, she had a daughter and I believe she will rule after her mom. They have such fun weddings, lots of happiness and music and fun. When Prince Carl Philip was married (you can see the youtube video) they had Coldplay's "Fix You" as one of the songs sung to them. Anyway interesting to see the inside of the royal palace there.

I don't check my mail all the time so I got the German and Russian postcards at the same time. Will get something nicer soon so I don't have issues with the paper or ink but for now I bought a binder and sheet protectors to keep the postcards in. And I mentioned previously that I love museums so it was cool to see another museum video this soon.
You missed one museum when you visited Stockholm. The photography museum. Or Fotografiska museet. It´s realy worth a visit. Also worth visit is Riddarhuset. You might found you have a noble heritige if you do some research on your relatives

When Alfred Nobel wrote his will Sweden was in union with Norway. That is most likely the reason why Nobel wanted the peace prize to be administered from Oslo.

There’s a similar ship to the Vasa in Portsmouth, on the south coast of England. She too was a royal flagship (Henry VIII...the guy with the six wives). She sunk in 1545 on her maiden voyage within sight of land. Like the Vasa, it has taken years to preserve her timbers, but she’s now on display. maryrose.org/
Nobels peaceprice is little bit different from the rest of the prices. Its given at a different cermony in Norway by Norwegians. They tried to stop Norway from giving out the price but they found that Alfred had mantioned that he would like the price to be given out in Norway. So they had let the Norwegians continue to give out the price. During Alfred Nobels life Norway was a part of Sweden.
Yes lets keep the Norwegians be happy. It was an Union were they called it a union to keep the Norwegians happy after Denmark gave them to Sweden. In the first draft of Kielfreden we wanted Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe island from Denmark to as compensation. But in the end we were happy with an union with Norway. were Norway was allowed to have its own country and laws but they should have the same foreign policy and the same king and that should be decided from Stockholm.

A couple of things of note.
The Nobel *peace* prize is given out in *Norway* and decided by a *Norwegian* Nobel institute because at the time Sweden was seen as a bit militaristic while Norway wasn't.
Also, regarding Vasa.
Ships of the line like that was that times equivalent of a aircraft carrier.
The amount of money spent by countries like the UK or this case Sweden on building such a ship that could go toe to toe with the best ships of hostile nations was more expensive in terms of what else you could purchase with it and also in terms of modern value adjusted for inflation etc then a modern aircraft carrier was.
After all, this was the *height* of modern technology at the time, even if we *today* think of it as ancient.

"the only place in the world you can see a ship like this", well the ship is different, but you can visit the Mary Rose museum in Portsmouth in the UK. Henry VIII's flagship The Mary Rose sank off the coast of England in the 1500s (about 150 years before the Vasa). It took on water and sank, and lay in the mud for over 400 years. It was raised in the 1980s and it took about 30 years to preserve the wood and the items on board. So rather similar in some ways, although whereas the Vasa seems to have been restored somewhat (with rigging added), the Mary Rose has just been preserved. But it's the artefacts that make the Mary Rose so special - before it was found, there were only 3 known Tudor longbows surviving, but now there are 140, and thousands of arrows. maryrose.org/ - pay a visit - you can visit Nelson's flagship The Victory very close by. I hope one day to see the Vasa - it looks awesome.

This was interesting : By the terms of Alfred Nobel’s will the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee since 1901. Alfred Nobel left no explanation as to why the prize for peace was to be awarded by a Norwegian committee while the other four prizes were to be handled by Swedish committees.
Most likely he intended it as a sign of peace and friendship to our neighbor.
