WE BOUGHT AN OPUS 15 CAMPER (AND IMMEDIATELY WENT OFF-GRID)

  • After many nights tent camping with our kids, we decided to take the leap and buy a camper - but it couldn't be just any camper. It had to be off-road capable, have an indoor shower and most importantly, comfortable sleeping for four. It quickly became clear the Opus 15 checked all of these boxes. So after a lot of waiting, we finally picked up our camper, packed it out and headed for one of our favorite places on earth - the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado.
    Today's video is a quick, behind-the-scenes take of the maiden voyage. We hope you enjoy coming along with us oh, and don't worry, our rooftop tent isn't going anywhere! Glamping or camping, we still enjoy both :)
    Interested in more info on the GX470 that we’re towing the camper with? Here’s the initial shakedown video for that vehicle:

    Curious what’s up with the jeep. After just buying a camper, I’m guessing it’s not a hemi swap……perhaps the Dana 30 is getting an upgrade….. I’ve never done the camper thing, so know nothing about it. I sleep in my JK between trails and it’s no so glamorous lol. Looks like a cool camper.

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey BY! The Wrangler is still kicking! Some maintenance and repairs happening and hasn’t gotten as much trail time lately - will have to do an update video on it soon. Sleeping out of the JK works! Sometimes simple is best.

    How much punishing did you put it through? I know the Silverton backcountry area well. As rugged as the Opus is, I doubt it or any other off-road camper could handle making it over Engineer or Cinnamon Pass. I saw other reviews on things like the pop up bed bolts getting stripped and rattling all about.

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John, definitely didn’t push it on this outing. We left it at camp for the harder stuff. Planning to take it on some harder stuff soon but I think the limitations will be the width / tightness of the trail and the grunt of the vehicle towing it. It’s not light or small compared to some of the other offroad campers. Definitely planning to do more updates as we get to wheel it some more!

    How did/do you guys like the no internal kitchen? Wife and I are looking at this, the Dweller 15, and the MDC 15 and we're curious if that lack of internal kitchen is something we're not entirely sure of

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For us we love the outdoor kitchen and do not miss anything inside. We typically try to camp in places with good weather and good temps, so that helps. Having the bathroom sink inside is nice for washing things without going outside, but the bathroom sink is so small we much prefer using the outdoor sink for most work.

    I’m really interested in getting one but have started reading some bad reviews of cheap Chinese components falling apart. Now that you have had yours for a bit, are you happy with the quality?

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few small things so far: a broken drawer slider, sticky fridge slider and noisy bathroom exhaust fan. Nothing major so far. This is our first RV type trailer so I’m not sure what “standard” should be. I have noticed a few hardware type things seem to be on the cheaper side, latches and whatnot, so we’ll see how they hold up.

    • @djt6753
      @djt6753 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4XTRAIL Guess thats kind of typical stuff but for the price of this unit better hardware should be standard. My concern would be the weight of the mounted 2 tires in rear and it's flexing.

    How's it handle with the Lexus? I want to get a tow vehicle for a OP15 and have been going back and forth on Sequoia vs a LExus like yours

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  ปีที่แล้ว

      The GX470 does it but you do get a little “tail wagging the dog” affect if you aren’t careful. Longer wheel base would be better.

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not really. It lasts about 2-3 days. Would prefer a 20gal I think.

    How does it tow? I have a GX as well and we’re trying to decide which way to go with these off-road campers.

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a lot for the GX but it does tow it without too much drama. Stops fine and has enough power on the highway. Steeper grades are a little harder. The only real drawback we’ve had with towing this particular camper with the GX is occasionally the camper will begin rocking and give that “tail wagging the dog” affect. I think this is due to the short wheelbase of the GX. For context our GX does have 2.5” lift and 33” tires.

    • @AirDownForWhat
      @AirDownForWhat ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Mine has the same set up, 3” lift and 33s. Gas mileage is already bad so I can imagine it’s horrid pulling the Opus. What speed does the wagging start? I appreciate the response.

    What type of range do you get out of a tank, towing the opus with that GX?

    • @4XTRAIL
      @4XTRAIL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mike! Apologies for the delay, we’ve been off grid this last week. Not great range, I think I averaged 8mpg while towing with grades on this setup. Just towed it with the Gladiator this last week and it averaged 13mpg so a little better than the GX!
