You are right about the context. But all Chinese words are made of characters put together, each character gives one meaning. So the meaning of the character matters when it comes to creating new words and/or understanding the meaning of a new word. If we only use Pinyin, then later whenever we need to create a new word for a new concept, whether it is borrowed from another language or just a domestic new thing/concept, you cannot create the word the way we're creating words today. For foreign loanword, what you could do is to translate according to the sound, which is what Japanese and Korean are using. So what I believe is that the meaning of the word is not why we need to know characters, it's actually the meaning of each character that matters, because that's how Chinese vocabulary are based of. Characters are like suffixes, prefixes and roots in English, without characters, there's no Chinese language as it is right now. That's why in the second half of the video I tried to explain how Chinese characters are put together to make new words.
