This 700bhp Audi S8 Is An Executive MONSTER! .....or is it?

  • Fellow petrolhead and subscriber Rob has decided to chop in his RS5 and A8 3.0TDI, combining them into one super-fast do everything car - an S8. Not content with the 500+ bhp the car has as factory, this one is now producing 700bhp. With quattro all wheel drive, and dry roads - how does that much power move this 2 ton barge?

    So, for about £28K, would you go for a 2015 Audi S8 or a 2018 Kia Stinger GTS? Both seem to be great cars. The Kia may be more fun being rear wheel drive, and give better peace of mind, with the balance of the warranty. The Audi has so much more power and is a luxury car, but could turn into a money pit with regard to reliability.

    Cletus, I hope you realize, when you drive at over 40mph, you terrify Clovis. The poor lad was expecting death at any moment. It was really funny watching him, you should do it more often.
    The Audi is a perfect example of what I dislike in modern cars; too powerful, too fast, too big, and too heavy. It's very powerful because it's very heavy, but it's very heavy because it's very powerful. It's a vicious circle.
    Anyway, your presentation and sound were excellent. The dissemination reached its usual high standard. The shirt was one of the best, and the sunglasses were bloody awful. You're improving with every video.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    • @ThorburnJ
      @ThorburnJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its not really very heavy because its very powerful - even a 'basic' one is the best part of 1900kg. Its really heavy because it is a car designed for comfort and interior space, not performance and handling. You can make a 700bhp car much lighter, McLaren do with the 720S for example.
      Whether you're really benefiting on the road beyond a certain point is the question - I have cars from 99bhp to 600bhp and the ones at the lower end of the power scale can be just as much, if not more, fun as the ones at the upper end of the scale.
      Given the cost of something like the S8, unless you just want something to play the cruiser and a bit of traffic light Grand Prix, its hard to see why if you wanted something fun to drive you wouldn't just buy an A8 and a decent sports car though - I'd guess in most instances a buyer of something like this has a few cars anyway and wants all their cars to have a certain level of performance.

    • @MrKeyboardCommando
      @MrKeyboardCommando 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James, I take your point regarding weight, but if you want a 700hp luxury saloon, it's going to be very heavy. All the parts necessary to give performance, while retaining comfort, see to that. The 720S is a very different car, built with different goals in mind.
      Given todays road conditions, and speed restrictions, it's not possible to extract maximum performance out of any current car. In my opinion, a car like the S8, given the world's current situation, is simply ridiculous.

    • @ThorburnJ
      @ThorburnJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But those parts aren't REALLY adding a lot of weight all things considered - the S8 probably has a 10% weight penalty vs. a 'basic' diesel whilst power is almost 100% higher as standard, more in the case of this car. Some aspects in making it faster, like carbon ceramic brakes (optional I think on the S8?) would weigh less than their steel counterparts.
      I agree though, I don't really see the point in cars like this - you end up with an A8 which is a worse luxobarge in terms of drivetrain refinement and range, and which is still a pretty poor performance car.

    Seriously, I would highly recommend that you test drive the 4.2 TTDI A8. With 850nm of torque from just 2000rpm, it will make any S8 look totally pointless & obsolete. Compared with the S8 woeful fuel consumption, it offers twice the range on a tankful, especially when cruising on the motorway/autobahn, which is truly unbelievable for such a heavy large sedan.
    The 4.2 TTDI is perfectly matched for the A8 compared to the 3.0 TTDI, with over 200nm of additional torque on tap.
    The smarter gentleman’s choice & the perfect grand tourer in my opinion.

    As someone who has both a D4 S8 and W12 the feeling you are having a hard time pinning down is because they are so refined and quiet the acceleration is almost hidden, they do not intend to show any sort of effort or strain and while still stupid fast they will not "feel" correct for their power levels.
    My old 5 speed ALH TDI Jetta I just picked up FEELS fast and exciting but it's just slow and loud.
