My favorite dessert: Cheesecake. It's fun to make, comes in a million varieties, is open to experimentation and is one of the easiest desserts to make low carb without ruining it. (I'm diabetic.) Second Favorite: Alton Brown's Peach Upside Down Cakes.
I seen here a bunch of pictures from Tasting history with Max Miller youtube videos. Even you guys din't mensioned him i just recommend his channel to all who intrestid in deep history of foods.
Pavlova is very much a Christmas dessert in Australia. Our Christmas is our summer & our summer's are scorching so aswell as our Christmas lunch & dinner being mostly cold salads, prawns, cold ham & cold chicken with pav to follow as it's light & fruity that mixes well in our climate with a few cold beers. Us Aussie's & our sibling rivals across the "ditch" the Kiwi's are typical sibling rivals as we argue with each other over everything from sport to dessert. Doesn't matter who "invented" the pav coz it's bloody yummy
Narrator: "...and shortbread rounds..." me: the actor who played Short Round's up for an Academy award, and he's been interviewed a lot lately -- Narrator, with accompanying photo: "...which sounds like the name of a kid who should be hanging out with Indiana Jones..."
When I was growing up, my parents' version of rice pudding was just rice with cinnamon and sugar. (And they served it for breakfast). It was really filling , and always kept me going until lunch. Did anyone else have this experience, or was it just me?
Also, I love macarons! They’re sweet, light, and chewy. I especially like them paired with cake and ice cream. :) Say, can you make a video on the history of boba tea? I’d love to get your take on it. :)
What an interesting video! 🤔I love all these desserts especially apple pie since I just had it for dessert! 😂 I want to learn how to make Macrons some day, challenge myself! 😉
Clearly no one in the comments has ever tried to make macaroons. Took me almost a dozen tries to get them decent looking. No one gets them right on the first try 🤷♀️ plus they’re made of almond flour which is significantly more expensive than whatever shit they put in ‘Oreos’ 🙄
My grandmother liked shortbread cookies; she called all shortbread cookies Lorna Doones, after the store bought brand Mom makes macaroons ("crinkle cookies") every Christmas
@naturekid1335, same here. The first time I had it was in 2nd grade, when I celebrated Columbus Day and Pilgrims. It was so good but I don't remember what was in it.
What no crumble? Heathens! I bloody loves apple crumble and custard I does. Sunday roast at pub just has to end in crumble, it's sacrilege if it doesn't. PS. Where's the clotted cream? It's St. Piran's Day and we must respect our Cornish friends.
I think only Australia since they ignore the 1922 book Australian home cookery by Emily Futter contained a recipe for "Meringue with Fruit Filling". This is the first known recipe for a food entirely resembling the modern pavlova, though not yet known by that name. But let’s not look at obscure texts like Wikipedia… (and before anyone attacks Wikipedia, the page has the source to a peer reviewed paper from 2010).
"... the overly priced and difficult to make macaron was born!" Difficult to make _pretty._ If you don't give a shit about them being perfect, they're super easy to make.
I'm French, and I've never heard of macarons with fillings.. or flavors, for that matter; they're just colored puffed up versions of the religious wafers
@@MigoKazan I've had tons of macarons, they're one of my favorite cookies. They're always colored and filled. Yet I've never been to your country. Maybe try leaving France for a while, you sound really ignorant. What you said sounds like something an American would say.
Ha ha! The moment I heard about ice being expensive, I remember that skit from “The Simpsons” when Apu hired some people to get him some ice. Just a thought. Nice video, by the way! :)
I love macarons... so light and delicious! I like macaroons too, but macarons are a thousand times better! I like cheesecake, but very much prefer the light and fluffy variety instead of the dense, heavy, and rich kinds. I'd love to see the history of tiramisu and meringue
Wow!! Had no idea apple pies originated from England, & that the only apple native to the U.S. is the crab apple!! Macarons remind me of pretty patties! 😂😂😂
Odd mocking the crucifixion of Christ image just for clip art for the "Roman's used eggs" commentary. A religious figure for a good percentage of the globe.
I'd like to learn more about: tapioca; peanut butter cups; s'mores; cinnamon toast... I have no doubt I'll have more for this list. Okie-dokie.. I must be hungry, this is the 3rd video about food I've viewed.
Liked the one about the pavlova. I come from New Zealand but honestly I don't get hung up on the origin of it. It tastes nice, who cares about what country it originally came from.
Amaretti ship around the world no problem so I'm not sure fragility is the reason. Also they don't use almonds, they actually use apricot or peach kernels.
So many people talk about New York Cheese Cake. I am not really a fan. I for years my mom had a cheese cake recipe and only in the last couple of years did I learn its called Washington Cheese Cake. I use crushed Oreos instead of graham crackers and its so good.
0:30 Wow, that was really lame, and this is coming from a former Atheist and Agnostic. What a horrible "joke" to make. Would you have done something like that to any other religious figure as a non sequitur?
Would you replace the crucifixion scene at 0:31 with something else? Hey, that just wasn't funny and is so not cool. I still liked everything else in the video!
Yep. Chilean here. Here it is the usual way to make it. It isn't called "custard" or "natillas" (word used in several countries) but "flan" if it is solid and "budín" if it is creamy. In other countries those words are used for other desserts. That's Spanish language for ya. Actually, it isn't Spanish, but Castilian 😄
"I'm going to invent a product so my wife can enjoy something she's normally allergic to." is pretty wholesome.
"I loved her to the point of invention." - Sarah Ruhl

Right? I really liked that story :)
My parents just tried to use my food allergies to kill me!
Cringe
We used to call my Mom's custard ' General Custard's last flan', because try as she might, it always came out looking like it had just lost a battle.
😆 🤣 😂
This comment made my day.

This is fun to learn about the history of our favorite foods
💯
These desserts sure look awesome. It's even more fascinating to learn more about their origins.
Ok boomer
Have you done the history of brownies? I’m curious how they came to be. I prefer them to cookies any day.
What the heck is with the eggs being thrown at our crucified Lord!! That absolutely disgusting!
Thank you!!! Unsubscribed. Not doing it, not putting up with that.

I hate pavlova it’s the worst thing about Christmas lol as a New Zealander you can have that disgusting sweet desert 😅
I have no problem with voice but I 100% prefer The Regular Guy
EEEY, my favourite dessert is not there! 😃
(A Tiramisù origin story would actually be pretty interesting I think)
This narrator does a great job, but I prefer the regular dude.
The dessert video needs a woman narrator. It's kinda sexist.
She needs her own writer. She's trying to deliver his narration humor and it just doesn't land.
@@THEanovahlol you are delusional

Macarons are not over priced, there are expensive because they are extremely difficult and time consuming to make.
For what you get, they're overpriced. Just an oversized Oreo? Meh...
@@Heike-- not even oversized,Oreos definitely got more stuff

A bit jarring for that Bill Cosby pic to pop up and the words “and it giggles” 5:32 being spoken simultaneously😬 yikes
