    Thanks for the shout out. I said you would love it. Been waiting for this vlog since I met you that Sunday morning. Watched this with a smile in my face. And the walk was 48 miles in 20 hours. All for Andy's man club. Keep cranking it

      It's great to see you tackling the locks single handed and getting through the troubles such as grounding on the cill between chambers without turning it into a big drama. Just calmly sorting it out. Narrow boating should be a calm time. I raise a half full glass of ale to you.

    Hi Robbie, I have to agree with you that canal looked superb, lovely film. The triple locks looked a bit like hard work for a single hander, but with your outstanding explanation of how the set up worked, I can honestly say I’m none the wiser 😂 no offence, love your vids, all the best mate!

    Robbie, I have tracked you through many, many episodes, winding through the English countryside at a snail’s pace. I find your videos extremely relaxing just a spitting distance from nature. All the green is hypnotic, especially as here in Ontario snow is everywhere and icicles are hanging off the roof. Every day I look forward to plugging into your broadcast, relaxing most of the time, only frustrated when you’re frustrated. Anyway, all I wanted to say is that your videos are appreciated, both for their quality and their personal content. Keep up the good work, as there’re many hungry people out there. Paul Telegdi

    Hi Robbie !!! Wow ! What an awesome trip and video thereof. My name is Jim, originally (1943) from Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire . Have been in Canada since 1966, where I became a citizen. Got married in Toronto and have two ‘kids’ , now in their 30’s. I have lived in Vermont since 1984 where I was in the Folk music distribution biz and then taught restaurant service in a culinary school here in central Vermont.I am ‘retired’, actually disability where I love vicarious travels such as you so beautifully offer ( I liked your channel and your personality immediately so look forward to enjoying your travels. You have a great photographer’s eye ( I studied Photography in 1969, in Toronto).When the kids were growing up I made sure they got to live in the mountains of Vermont so they get the rural experience as I did in my childhood. ‘Nuff for now and pleased to ‘meet’ you !!!

    Robbie, great video as ever, amazing canal the Chesterfield, I had no idea it was like that. Triple staircase locks have always filled me with trepidation, never actually having done one, so to see how you managed it single handed was very helpful. It seems that grounding in the triple of double was not that consequential after all and quite difficult to avoid sometimes, is that always the case?
    The footage of the beer with the lock in the background in the evening light. Maybe it is because beer, locks and evening light are all things close to my heart, but you do have an eye for magical visual moments that 99% of other video makers just would not see.

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Mike what a nice comment - I try! Yes although I got stuck twice coming down, going up was ok I think and in general most staircase locks are absolutely fine - and actually most seemed to be manned by lock keepers. 8^)

    I appreciate your videos, Robbie. They calm my anxiety here in Seattle. I also like that you show us where you are on a map. I lived on a boat in rural Washington State and enjoyed the tranquility. I always smelled like diesel fumes and local folks figured I was a live--aboard, which was fine. Do you ever use a drone for aerial photography? That would be a nice touch. Cheers!

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, that’s so good to hear. I tend to watch ASMR to help with mine. Drones - I don’t know... if I can get one that can automatically track me as I’m moving along or going through locks maybe? Or an underwater one how cool would that be!!

    • @flyingtonyw
      @flyingtonyw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobbieCumming.......You don't really need a drone for the under water shots. Just a GoPro in it's waterproof case, I use em on the Model Yachts. A cheap one gives good enough footage and wont cost the earth if you lost it. Just tether it to a pole.

The work is going FULL speed now to get it reinstated all the way to chesterfield and it"s just the bit from Renishaw to stavely left to do the chesterfield bit is just about finished I cant wait for the marina at chesterfield to be built but the plans look great it's gonna be quite large.

    Hi Robbie! It looks very nice there! I am moored at Cromwell Lock and not going any further north as my anchor is in my Mum's shed! The micro pub at Sawley Lock was temporarily closed when I was there :( I am off to The Soar next. Loving the videos and the music, thanks!

    Such a beautiful canal - such narrow locks! What if she had stayed jammed and the water kept coming?? Eek... And that interesting beer. I get the unfiltered unpasteurised milk - didn't know you could get beer like that - must be tasty. Just going to look it up - possibly the most useful part of the video... Just kiddin

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes very narrow but we would have got out of there safely even if it was overflowing! Ha ha yes look up the beer - or go into a real ale type pub and look for 'hazy'/vegan beer...

    Hi there! This is my local canal and it really is as beautiful as you say. Please could you big up the Chesterfield Canal Trust (I am not geeky enough to be able to add the link but you are!)...there is just 9 more miles to connect up so that the canal is restored in full. We are waiting for final Hs2 plans so that the restoration can progress further. Thanks! Sally x

    Yeay, Chesterfield Canal! I'm right down the end of it, the part you can't get too. There's a couple of tour boats down this end, I don't think there are any private boats. It's a little bit far to walk in my state of health, so I got myself an electric bike. I ride over bridge no. 1, past Tapton lock, usually get myself a sausage cob at Hollingwood Hub. That blow-hole you showed reminded me of the time I saw a guy working the lock at Hollingwood Hub; for maintenance, I think. (The canal was just-about flooding, another guy had just cleared away some debris from the sluice inlet.) On the first turn of the crank he had to turn the crank and turn himself, so the spurt of water which came up the hole wouldn't get him in the face! Anyway, after HH, I go on to Stavely Town Basin which is weird after the leafy ride up; it's all new and bare! Empty too, not being connected to the rest of the network yet. There's another extremely low bridge south of the basin, just the one. After the basin, there used to be about 300 yards of water before the works, but that's all drained out now; the new lock is empty and all. I'm not sure why, but I overheard something about a new bridge being made too low, and the canal having to be lowered. After Stavely, the good bike path leaves the canal and follows what was once a little railway line, very straight and flat, banked high above the countryside, and like what you said of the canal, it's lined with trees which sometimes part, giving great views. :) I see the canal again at bridge no. 18, it's in a really sorry state there. Sometimes I turn off the railway and follow the canal, full of reeds and all.

    On those rather narrow locks that don't have cross overs. Could you just have a 10-15 foot plank you could throw across, then walk across, then put the plank back on your boat?
    Rather than have to walk ahead or behind to a ladder or bridge?

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah probably be a bit dodgy underfoot (nothing is that level on the canals!) and a bit of a pain having to haul it around but why not give it a go!

    Looking at that lock gate windlass handle at beginning brings to mind thought that I'd want a leash on mine so I didn't drop it in the lock or canal and lose it. Well, either that or a pile of about a hundred or so extras stashed aboard.

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He he yes I have dropped it before now but managed to rescue with my sea magnet! I had it in a holster but that got caught, turned upside down and ‘plop’! I stick it in between my belt now where it can’t move. 8^)

      Scott FW not a good idea to have a hand strap on it- paddles can occasionally slip, if you're not concentrating and the thing spins round it could easily break your wrist. A lot of people leave them attached to raised paddles while locks drain or fill- again a bad idea, if the ratchet slips and the paddles drop, the windlass flies round and off the shaft becoming a two kilo pointy missile...
