Don't miss the 1.50 min mark, sorry about the bad Flip-Cam video. Newport Beach - Balboa Pier Flooded by High Tide 08-31-2011 11am. Photos at www.PatmanFilms.com
Omg I jog on this stretch from 36th to the pier pretty often now in 2023 and it’s so interesting to see 1. The water reach where I would be swept away and 2. How the skyline has changed. I had no idea there were apartments there! Now where those apartments were is probably the road. Or the bars. Crazy how times change. This is a really cool time capsule for a lot of things
I mean Spain has gotten Tsunami's a bunch of times l'd haul too The worst one was on: 11/01/1755 Deaths: 2,214 Wave height: max. 18.30 m Caused by Earthquake in Portugal (Lisbon) with a magnitude of 8.5. The tsunami caused damages in 12 further countries. A total of 50,000 humans died. Water can beautiful yet terrifying.
Brings back memories. I think it was 1980, and a photo was in the newspaper showing a guy paddling his kayak in front of my parents beach house on Balboa Boulevard.
+hebneh I was on Catalina that day and my car was parked there, but it was parked a few rows back so it only a little bit of water on it, but we were scared when we got back as we were the only ones still left in the lot.
I remember this day, I was working in one of the houses my company van makes an cameo @ 3:31. Out of no where I heard the waves get loud and people screaming, but the craziest thing was seeing those cement fire pits and trash cans getting tossed around by the water like they were leaves.
This is a straight up tidal wave people!! I cannot believe i live in newport beach, and i didnt even here about this-until i randomly found this clip on TH-cam. I swear-California is goin dooown in the ocean!!
Wow. I live for stuff like this ( displaced New Englander) Once upon a time I was driving 1A north in Hampton Beach NH, awesome late fall nor'easter blowing, lunar high tide, there was a traffic jam at the north end of the sea wall of crazies like me lining up for waves, I mean green water, coming up over the wall and over your car. It was wild, literally a ton of sea water hitting your car, the smell of salt water coming thru the car vents. Yeah I made three runs thru that with Aine Minogue on WGBH radio with Brian O'Donovan talking about Samhain and the return of the light in December. Or Provincetown harbor with the waves stopping 6 feet from George's Pizza back door.
No do move the cars. Don't worry. That salt water is great for your vehicles. And the the rest of us certainly don't mind insurance premiums going up for stupid people if they were to get damaged.
Haven’t seen a high Tide like that its like 20% Considered Tsunami and 85% NOT considered tsunami. But i guess that the wind makes the high tide stronger and stronger but i dont really know the facts of low tide and high tide, And it’s kinda dangerous cuz it might damage the safe guard house thingy specially if there’s people on it. but the more important is they’re safe.... But for me the percent of dangerous is like 30% to 34% or less than, but the percent of the NOT dangerous is kinda like 70% above or 70% low, But i dont know..
Oh geez! I don't remember this day--but it looks like it was memorable to those there--especially for the people who got the lot around their cars flooded. That stinks!
This happens in Boston harbor too during a certain ride and time of yr without a nor Easter off the coast, that's happening more and more along the coasts around the world due to global warming and melting polar and Antarctic sea ice.
i have never ever seen it get like that before, was it happening like that all the way up to Huntington or Seal? and does that happen often? like once every 10 years or was that like once in a lifetime?
Thanks for Replying. I have heard of how when the moon and our Sun are lined up the tide is higher. But I am a real Novice when it comes to these kind of things.
All coastal areas, especially Calif beaches are in big, BIG trouble. Glacier melt spells real unstoppable problems for 10s of millions of residents in years to come!
It’s funny reading some of these comments I’ve lived here (in Zoo-Port) since the early 70’s this extra high tide happens every two or three years sometimes two times a year, Not Global Warming just high tide. This is a tourist parking lot and getting your car splashed with salt water waves will not disintegrate a car. Over time for many years, yes. That’s why cars in the Midwest where they SALT the roads in winter start to rust after years and years. When you buy a brand new car part of the warranty will say we guarantee against corrosion, ether 3-5 or 10 years, all brands and all cars.
yooooo somewhere in the vid you can prob see my fam’s beach house. It’s like less than a mile from there. Can’t believe I didn’t hear of this happening!
0:22 Bird: "I Don't give a damn!"
Imagine surfing then you just end up in the car park after riding a wave all the way through
sounds kinda fun tho
Lol
and ended up on your own cars roof.

Brings back memories.

I remember 😢
When the governor says he's closing the beaches he's not fooling around
Gosh! A lot of vehicles did get caught by the high tide!
Ebb Tide in Newport Beach is under Construction no one lives there. But they protest city hall no shelter near our homes.
Thank the lord for those orange cones, they saved the day!
I would be most unhappy to discover my parked car had been partly immersed in salt water.
+hebneh I was on Catalina that day and my car was parked there, but it was parked a few rows back so it only a little bit of water on it, but we were scared when we got back as we were the only ones still left in the lot.
Was the car salvage
Should be aware of news postings that showed this would happen, it was not a surprise.
Sea water rising
Hope you went straight to a car wash to get the salt water off.
I remember this day, I was working in one of the houses my company van makes an cameo @ 3:31. Out of no where I heard the waves get loud and people screaming, but the craziest thing was seeing those cement fire pits and trash cans getting tossed around by the water like they were leaves.
Love that stretch of beach between balboa pier and newport pier...we used to play smash ball there 😊
After seeing this, I’ll never park in that parking lot again lmao
This is a straight up tidal wave people!! I cannot believe i live in newport beach, and i didnt even here about this-until i randomly found this clip on TH-cam. I swear-California is goin dooown in the ocean!!

THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR VIDEO (MEMORYSTAR)
❤💕THANKS AGAIN 💕❤
0:09 I love the albatross standing there...
Seagull
astronomical high tide combined with a strong swell from a distant storm
Wowwwww thanks for the show.....
3:08 The seagull jumping up and try flying, but he is a walker bird. 😁😆
And walk again.
A whole new meaning for ‘at the car wash’.😱
Hopefully, this video will be recommended to me next year as well.
Salt water reaching the engine compartment can't be good.
Salt water reaching a car is never good
Use to love going to Newport Beach
I wouldn’t advertise my name on this film.
That one car beeping was crying for help
Awesome video
beach goer: Oh, that was a short drive.
I remember when this happened I was in Huntington Beach at a restaurant and I saw the water come past the building and it went all the way into pch
*Ocean: Aight, I'mma go shopping today.* 😅
2:25 sum good brakes there
Wow that was a high tide all right, does that happen every high tide?
No. Very unusual for the water to go that high up on the beach let alone in the parking lot.
It was because of the high tide in combination with the high surf.
No I’ve only see it happen twice
Wow thats crazy thanks for the great video. I want to go down there any check that out.
if the ocean wants to wave, the only thing you can do is wave back.
Where’s my skimboard!
1:42 the people running in the background LMAO😭😭😭😭
Sells used car. Buyer: "Any rost Problems?" No!
No do move the cars. Don't worry. That salt water is great for your vehicles. And the the rest of us certainly don't mind insurance premiums going up for stupid people if they were to get damaged.

Oh geez! I don't remember this day--but it looks like it was memorable to those there--especially for the people who got the lot around their cars flooded. That stinks!
Most excellent!

Mom: son go water the plants
Son: mmm I hate this place

They were like "give a 1/100th of a static charge GBDX9000 off the coast of orange county let's just see what it could do at that extremely low range"
damn! never seen waves that high in Newport.
SimplyM3h876 have you ever been in the Newport balboa beach?
Cones are essential in saving lives.
Thanks for Replying. I have heard of how when the moon and our Sun are lined up the tide is higher. But I am a real Novice when it comes to these kind of things.
Beautiful
The cones should have stood their ground better. They at least should have had back up.
It was like hurricane sandy waves
I lost a necklace there on that beach years ago..wonder if it was ever found...
I’ve been here :o
That would be fun as hell to go swimming in
So they just watched the orange cones float into some whales mouth?
All coastal areas, especially Calif beaches are in big, BIG trouble. Glacier melt spells real unstoppable problems for 10s of millions of residents in years to come!
it's cool how the parking was filled with water
very powerful 1 to 6 meters high waves similar to Tsunami waves
Why do they build a parking lot up to the beach for cars to park in if they know the high tide is going to flood it? -_-
It’s funny reading some of these comments

If that was my car, I’d have straight to the car wash for a thorough steam and engine clean.
God, that water's so blue!
Well that's bluey for you
Wave is cool omg
Nobody:
Sea water: I'm about to corode this car's whole career!
I was there!!!!:D
Who’s here after the most recent 2020 flooding?
Newport WHERE ? ? ? It’s a huge planet. Try to complete the description.
California.
@@danielhartin7680 Thank you! 👍🏻🇺🇸

Salt water does wonders for the underside of your car.
There are Newports everywhere, which Newport is this one, UK, USA, AU?
Balboa Pier is located in California.
