  • The perfect storm was created when 2 storms in the South Pacific combined sending a swell unlike any other at the perfect angle for this South-West facing beach during one of the highest tides of the year.

These waves are not very large. However the houses are built very close to the breaker line without any serious sea wall. They are incredibly vulnerable. I am amazed that people were even PERMITTED to build in such a location. Presumably no insurance company would touch them.

They could be houses originally built a long time ago. Right before West Island in MA there were some houses built right on the ocean like this. When Hurricane Bob wiped them out the owners weren't allowed to rebuild because the building laws had changed. They still owned the property they just couldn't build on it. All 3 bought recreational vehicles and still enjoyed themselves in the summer.

Never understood why Americans are allowed to build right on beaches like that. In my country you can't build within a certain distance of the sand or "edge", and even then it's very rare. Almost all of our coastlines have a strip of public land between houses and sand, so that full public access is retained. Much better for everyone.

I quite enjoy the ocean as my backyard. Born and raised, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The noise of the waves is soothing, and the smell is something I guess outsiders get used to 🤷🏼‍♀️
As for hurricanes, I have many days notice of when it may hit so I can make preparations or if it’s bad enough, evacuate. We are made aware of storms, any anomalies, know the tide schedules, and when to expect king tides. This idiot is obviously new to the beach if he’s surprised the waves just keep coming - yes sir, they don’t stop. Ever. 😂
Per your comment, I can counter, I don’t understand why folks like the mountains so much? They’re cold, way too quiet, and can also take you out while you’re sleeping (landslide, mudslide, avalanche). Not to mention all the dangerous animals hiding within the woods and forests!

He just seemed so astonished...I would be putting plywood up on the windows and doors and get the heck out of the waters way, it's embarrassingly naive to not get the family to a safe place. The man says we will need a few bricks laid after the storm, and his son says you're going to need A NEW HOUSE! The son is more practical than his dad will ever be. I wouldn't have stood there with bricks being thrown left and right hollering " woohoo" every ten minutes. But then I am a very practical person and try to always have a plan B in case plan A doesn't fill the need. I would have had wooden plywood boards stored in the garage with sandbags filled and placed in front of the base of the wooden boards to protect the house from seeping water. Did he not think those flying bricks would break his skull the closer and bigger the surge of water became? It's like...well, Duh....didn't know that might happen to me! And then the wife going over to help save a neighbor's potted plant right at the height of the
wave's crests? Water in any mass amount can wipe you out of everything...and flood water cannot be controlled, only influenced and encouraged to go where you want it to go. And there is only so much you can do to achIeve the containment...so plan ahead and be ready with a protective plan B in case of water flooding. This man had not, and was not willing or serious enough to stop filming and do what he might have done to protect his family and his property. He was way too unconcerned. Baffles my brain.
I guess he thought he would garner a lot of UTube viewers but i think it backfired on him. DUH.

Dana Point has a history of experiencing very large waves. Those so inclined can research history and find the location was also known as "Killer Dana"before the creation of the harbor. It's name was coined because of extremely large waves that would periodically arrive there. The waves shown in the video are not large at all by historical standards. I suspect the above average swell height combined with a higher than normal tide. The narrator's commentary demonstrates how little he understands of the ocean he is standing next to.

I live 42 feet above the record tidal surge for my area, 33 feet above the record tidal surge for my state and 8 feet above the record tidal surge for the region. That's at grade. My living room floor is another 18 inches above that. I can walk down to the beach in under 10 minutes any time I want to but I am nice and safely away from the water, 3 blocks away.
