  • In this video I finish turn an elegant box of English boxwood roughed out to dry several months ago. I demonstrate cutting the threads by hand with thread chasers.

    When you started with the blanks, I could not see the final shape. I love the final shape. Boxwood is so uniform in color not much need to match grain. Thanks for a great video.

    Well done Mike. I'm not into thread chasing as of now but I enjoy watching someone do it. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

    Great video Mike! Nice to see how that Boxwood is being used.

      Great stuff. This was only the third piece of boxwood to come my way and the largest piece. Truely a delight to chase threads on.

      @@MikePeaceWoodturning Mike, we can always get more boxwood. Only issue is getting it to the USA. My suitcase will only manage a few pieces!! Logs about 4-5" diameter and about 14" long are available. Can put you in touch with my supplier if you want.

    Very nice. I really gotta get some thread chasing tools. That scraper catch in the beginning had me laughing, thanks for explaining why it happened. I get those all the time when I'm using a freshly sharpened scraper.

      Glad you enjoyed it. I do not usually turn wood that hard that makes a burr inappropriate so it caught me by surprise.

    Hi Mike, another great video. I have just started this week getting back into thread chasing, (had 6 months away from it) so I've been watchimg a few videos as a refresher. For sizing the male thread I waste the first 3 mm or so, and size it to just fit in the female thread. Then turn down the actual threaded diameter, leaving it larger than the first 3 mm. This extra 3 mm also gives an indication of the thread depth. I once saw Alan Batty do this and its stuck with me over the years. This assumes that you have the extra lenth to play with. Thanks Mike and happy holidays fom over the pond

      Yes, that is the way Sam Angelo does it. I started measuring but am working on doing it the way you do.

    Hi Mike, Nice video as usual!! Was this an end grain or side grain box as it was hard to tell with the light color of the wood? Also, did you only use the "wax" based sanding paste for your final finish? It looked like it had a low "matte" type finish and was attractive. Please advise. Thanks, Myles

      End grain. Side grain would tend to go oval and the threads would not fit. I used minwax AO finish.

    With regards to the scraper catch at the beginning of the video, why are you using regular scrapers (as opposed to negative rake scrapers) for so much of the hollowing of your boxes? I've converted virtually all of my scrapers to negative rake because I find them to be so much more forgiving and more flexible than regular scrapers. I'd like your thoughts. Obviously, your experience has been different than mine.

      I have also converted most of my scrapers to NRS. I actually did use a NRS for cleaning up the inside after using the conventional scraper but chose to leave it out as the video was getting long. My problem was I had left the roughed box too thick as I did not want to risk getting the shape wrong. As a result I felt like it needed the more aggressive conventional scraper. Finishing the hollowing with only a NRS would have taken a while. My challenge was the wood was so hard, it made the conventional scraper grabby as I could not easily lift the handle for a better attack. I suppose I am attempting to emulate the way Richard Raffan scrapes but perhaps with less skill and finesse. That said I do use NRS quite a bit. Perhaps I should have left a few moments in the video with the NRS with a comment as to why I used each. Thanks for the observations.

    COULD YOU USE ONE EDGE OF A TAP TO MAKE THREADS IF YOU PUT A HANDLE ON LIKE THE TURNING TOOLS ??????????????

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you could grind one side flat. See my video on making one froma bolt. th-cam.com/video/9apyQ7_Ew54/w-d-xo.html My advice is to buy a set to rule out one part of the equation that can cause problems.
