Also a Kate Bush Documentary about Kate Bush Pink Floyd and other Influences and Kate’s influence on artists like Bjork and Tori Amos. We also discussed cultural, appropriation vs appreciation a topic it seems kate Bush’s “Egypt” explored well before it was a widely discussed conversation.

      @popcornphilosopher1923 Kate Bush was a real trailblazer for female artists
      She has 100% control over what she did, Kate didn't play the music industry game, and she stayed true to herself. That's why there is very little out in the way of interviews. You're a few albums away from The Sensual World, but if or when you get to it, you're in for one hell of a treat

    Thank you, Io, for another interesting and entertaining reaction .. "Egypt", as you have pointed out, is another aural soundscape from this mystical, fantastical album .. You are right in saying that you just keep on hearing more things every time you hear Kate's songs, and yes, there's a lot happening in this one .. Having said that, "Egypt" isn't a song that particularly grabs me by itself .. But it fits very well into the feel and flow of the album .. Have a great upcoming weekend, lovely lady !

      Interesting, I have been hearing a lot of people say Egypt is not their favorite track. I really enjoyed this one. I thought it really brought the drama. I think maybe lyrically was more confusing because I wasn’t sure I understood the intention at first it’ll be interesting to see where it ends up when I rank songs! Thank you and I hope you have a nice weekend toO!

    Another really interesting reaction. On Tori Amos and Kate - I was watching a BBC documentary about Kate when John Lydon went on a bit of a tirade about Tori basically calling her a copycat (and he has called her a Kate Bush tribute act in the past)
    After this, I did some research using Gaffaweb and was quite shocked by the level of hostility that there appears to have been from about 1995 to the early 2000s. When Tori moved to the UK in the 1990's some saw this as a cynical ploy to exploit the market by chasing Kate's fans and indeed this was supposedly supported by comments made by one of the American record execs.
    There was a lot of chat about Tori using vowel inflections not natural to an American accent and them being the same as those used in Kate's English singing accent (as well as some sonic similarities). When initially asked about the Comparison with Kate she denied knowledge of her work which was quickly shown to not really be true. Obviously frustrated by the comparisons always coming up in her UK promotional work she started being a bit derogatory about Kate's work with quotes such as "she screams too much - there isn't a mouse" and 'she smokes way more weed than me'. As for Kate when asked about Tori in 1994 described her work as 'nice' which was not really seen as a compliment. In 2006 for Mojo magazine Kate was asked of what she now thought of Tori Amos and didn't answer. The interviewer said so silence. To which she replied 'yes silence'. This is the closest I have ever found of Kate being derogatory to another named artist. She was known to follow the maxim if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything.
    Over the years the situation seems to have been forgotten and Tori has appeared on tribute tv programmes regarding Kats and often covers her songs live. But it must be said she did avoid attending Kate's 2014 shows due to touring commitments but it was noted at the time there was a big window that would have allowed it. (Bjork, Annie Lennox, Madonna, and many many others attended)

    • @popcornphilosopher
      @popcornphilosopher  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, this is very interesting is a lot of the stuff I never heard. like some of these comments that I never knew that Tori said anything derogatory about Kate. And sort of vice versa? you know I think there was really a pressure put on female artists back then. Because there were less of them at the top in the music industry. It’s really normal to have influences you can find it in everybody’s work and both in Kates and Tori‘s work. It’s sad that maybe admitting you were influenced by someone automatically makes. you appear to be a copycat. I was listening to a recent interview with Tori, and she said that since most radio stations back then would only play one female artist an hour and even if you didn’t want it. there would naturally be a weird competition, even though you might also admire that same artist. Some of that has changed music is distributed differently, And honestly I’m glad Tori is at the point that she can just unabashedly enjoy Kates music and cover it

      I could labeled a feminist but they didn't ask Mick about how he felt about John Lennon or Elton about Ed Sheeran. But it seems to be acceptable for the media to ask Madonna about Lady Gaga, Whitney about Mariah, Nikki about Cardi, Barbra about Celine etc. Like these ladies aren't icons in their own right. That's what I don't get. Whitney 's response was "I don't" which she explains as I'm sure she doesn't think about me. I'm not faulting an artist for saying I was inspired by this artist. It just seems like the press is trying to stir the pot when it comes to female artists

    Hi IO and thanks again for some good insights and putting them together in a way that makes for an enjoyable watch.
    You have mentioned a couple of times about this album almost being like a curiosity shop and of course you are entirely correct. That is one of the reasons why this album and her sixth studio album "The Sensual World" are my two favourite Kate Bush albums. In them the songs are almost hermetically sealed worlds all by themselves and you can come to a single song and get lost in it without having to think about what went before or comes after it. There is no doubt that her next two albums (and because it was her first album - and happens to be very very good - "The Kick Inside") generate most discussion from music critics and KB fans. But they both make demands on the listener - demands that I am very to meet but demands nonetheless. You cannot really listen to side 2 of "Hounds of Love" and really get it without listening to it in one sitting. Similarly with "The Dreaming" it defies you to listen to it right through just to see if you are man enough or woman enough to withstand it (in your case - since you have already encountered Bjork you won't have any problem - but it "The Dreaming" is a beast of an album). But this album "Never For Ever" allows you to take in the view and enjoy each song and all of its quirks as they come.
    Egypt is an interesting song to explore because it had an existence before this album. Kate had performed it in her "Tour of Life" tour but it had a completely different arrangement and feel, feeling and looking much more like a musical theatre song. But by the time she recorded this album she completely reimagined the song as she explored her use of and experimented more and more with sounds etc. it is worth comparing the two versions to see just what a change "Never For Ever" brought to her music.
    Also regarding this song, Kate herself said that it was about someone who just "loved" Egypt but had never actually been there. We often get our image of other places from news, or Hollywood, or holiday programmes and never get to know the nuance or reality of them. Of course, this song also has one of her greatest lyrics "My Pussy Queen knows all my secrets." Egypt has often been called Kate's 'proggiest' song. You could quibble that given some of what she does on her next two albums. But I guess if we are to label one of her songs as the 'proggiest' then I guess it might as well be "Egypt." The song forms part of her "Christmas Special" which to be honest I don't think works particularly well, but it is probably a programme that any detailed exploration of her music should include.
    In relation to Bjork and Tori Amos I think you have well captured Bjork's attitude to and appreciation of Kate's music. She has cited "The Dreaming" as one of her favourite albums (and I think you can hear a lot of it in Bjork's music). She also called Kate: “one of the biggest pioneering producers. Everybody just says, ‘Oh, she’s just a singer. She’s just a chick’. But they forget all the other work she’s done, that woman. She’s very, very, very gorgeous.”
    In relation to Tori, I personally think that she has received a lot of unfair comment. I like her music a lot. Regarding comparisons between her and Kate Bush I think some people misread appreciation and inspiration as direct influence. Tori did say of Kate that her album "Hounds of Love" had a tremendous impact on her:
    “I love the second side of this album. I was in Los Angeles when I heard this record for the first time. I was hanging out in the rock chick scene. Thigh-high boots, gigantic amounts of hairspray, and everything. I had encountered nothing but rejection for months, nobody liked my piano stuff. And I was in a band that did something completely different. Then I found this record, and put it on, listened to side one, liked it OK, listened to side two, listened to side two again, and again, and again and again."
    On another occasion Tori said:
    “I’ll never forget the first time I heard about Kate,” [...] I was playing in a club, I was 18 or 19 and somebody came up to me, pointed their finger and said, Kate Bush. I went, Who’s that? I wasn’t really familiar because Kate didn’t really happen in the States until Hounds Of Love. I was shocked because the last thing you want to hear is that you sound like someone else. Then people kept mentioning her name when they heard me sing, to the point where I finally went and got her records. When I first heard her, I went, Wow, she does things that I’ve never heard anybody do, much less me. But I could hear a resonance in the voice where you’d think we were distantly related or something.”
    So I personally think that as with Bjork, there is a definite admiration for Kate and a drawing of inspiration from what she set out to do, and a certain degree of adding some elements of Kate's music to what they were already doing - but then Kate did the same, with people like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, etc.
    But anyway thanks again for a really cool video.

    • @popcornphilosopher
      @popcornphilosopher  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hadn’t heard Tori so specifically say that about being compared to Kate Bush. That no artist wants to hear that and that’s very true. But the truth is every artist has influences. As for the Christmas special, I’ll be interested to see if I like it. I really like the Efteling special. But I will be doing a reaction to it. Also, will be interested to hear the dreaming as I’ve already heard Björk’s being influenced here on this album. And I feel like if it’s Björk’s favorite album it’ll probably be up there for me too!

    • @popcornphilosopher
      @popcornphilosopher  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In terms of this song, being proggy. I don’t think it’s just because it’s progressive. Because, as you said many of her earlier songs have been just as progressive. But it has all the hallmarks of prog the synth sounds, the meandering quality as well as the time and key signature changes

    • @tommydevlin702
      @tommydevlin702 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@popcornphilosopher Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my meanderings. Given the nature of the Internet I should probably just reiterate that Bjork cited "The Dreaming" as one of her favourite albums, not necessarily her favourite. Still on "The Dreaming" (even though you haven't got to it yet), as recently as march 2023 Allison Scagliotti gave over a large swathe of a podcast interview to describe how much that album meant to her: to hear a woman do what Kate did on that album and to send signal to women everywhere that there are no limits and that the rules and conventions are there to be held in healthy disregard, and her willingness to make herself seem ridiculous, her voice deliberately ugly and her music deliberately off-putting was something that considered to be almost revelatory.
      On influence and so on - if you compare Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" and Japan's "Ghosts" to some of "Never for Ever" or Kate's song "Mother Stands For Comfort" on her 1985 album "Hounds of Love" you can numerous similarities. But to me influence sometimes owes a lot to the time and place we inhabit. In the UK at that time quite a few people were experimenting with sound, time signatures etc. But there was also a lot of that going on the US as well and Tori came through and out of that. Yes she certainly did/does greatly admire Kate Bush and pays great credit to her when she covers any of her songs (there is a video of her covering the utterly beautiful "And Dream of Sheep", where she calls Kate "The great lady who wrote this song") but I do think that she gets a lot of undeserved criticism.

    I’m being sincere here, does GenZ think that cultural appropriation, political correctness, and basically anti-racism is new?
    The term “politically correct” goes back to the 80s. But, regardless of when the terms were invented, there have always been tons of people who weren’t arseholes. People haven’t just started thinking in the last 20 years.
    Kate would be acused of cultural appropriation with the song “The Dreaming“, these days. But her intentions were always reverent.

    • @popcornphilosopher
      @popcornphilosopher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very sweet of you thinking, I am GenZ haha. And I agree. I actually said a lot of this in my video. I did some research before I made this video. I read that cultural appropriation the phrase was coined in the 80s but the idea referred to as orientalism was talked about in a book as early as the 40s, What I was saying was that musicians didn’t start taking heat for it until maybe the early 2000s. and that even Kate might’ve been considered of doing it although I don’t think there was any ill intent meant by it there’s a fine line between cultural, appropriation and cultural appreciation. like I said in my video, I think a lot of musicians like a theme. Still believe the idea of this song was
      broaching the underlying ideas behind, the cultural appropriation conversation. Which is what I should title the video, but it doesn’t fit in a thumbnail!

    In the BBC Christmas special in 1979 entitled Kate. Kate lip-synced a performance to Egypt with video footage appearing behind her on a blue screen, I'm sure that the images were approved by Kate, since they reinforce the message of this song.
    Once again a wonderful deep dive, your research and attention to detail is just brilliant. I'm looking forward to your impression of the next track on the album which I thibk is "The Wedding List" which Kate also performed on the Kate special. In fact at some point the 1979 Kate special might be worth a look, because as a programme broadcast during the Christmas Holiday it was, let's say, somewhat different... 😀
    Anyway, as an aside I recently attended my 2nd concert (gig) of the year last Saturday, which was Blur performing live at Wembley Stadium and as a concert they blew out of the park, a brilliant concert. The ages of the fans aged from Kids to people older that I'am 😀 think heavens...
    There were quite a few accents in the crowd and I do know that some people travelled a long way to be there.
    To get slightly back on track my 1st concert was the month before at the London O2, which was Peter Gabriel as part of his I/O tour, which included most of his classic hits and some material from his new album, which is due to be released later this year. Again, another excellent concert.
    BTW the September 2023 edition (out now) of the pop magazine UNCUT has a picture of Kate on the front and includes an article about the secrets behind Kate's 40 greatest songs. I have no idea if the physical copy of it, is available in the states.

      Is it syrup because it’s brown lol?? Yeah it seems to be the consensus that Tori didn’t start admitting Kate was an influence until later. But yeah, like you said everyone has influences!

      Haha no! If you say syrup in London that’s cockney rhyming slang for wig. As in syrup of fig! I would love you to review Ian Dury’s Reasons To Be Cheerful that’s a riot 😎👍🏻

    I'm fascinated by Egypt, the unseen Egypt, the symbolic side. Have you seen Magical Egypt? It's a great series.
