  • How to cut basic 45 degree angles. I show how to cut these basic angles using a miter saw and a circular or (skill saw). Whether you cut on the flat for trim or on a bevel for a box or deeper cut this video should help explain the basic ways to do it while explaining the long and short points of these cuts. I hope you learn a little something as always and remember to be safe when using your tools. Always wear proper PPE!

    Hi, Johnny Works! I want to Thank U, for helping me to cut my 1st 45 Degree Angle Cuts. I were so excited. The top piece for my Island was a little too short , but, it was nothing that some wood filler count help even. Even though I did try to cut outside of my measured marks. Thanks, for teaching me about the Short to short & Long to Long. I appreciate U! When I’m done with the next part of my Island & upload my video I’m going to Credit you for helping me in the video. Thank you watching and I am glad the video helped you a little !!! One thing to remember when cutting materials especially with a miter saw is, if you are not 100% sure cut your piece long so you can always trim it if needed. I am guilt of not doing this on occasion but it is a good thing to practice. Good luck with your projects and Channel!!👍

    The blade takes a decent portion of the wood away at the line. Should we cut at the outside of the cut line rather than on the cut line? I think that you probably did, but I missed you mentioning this important point. Great video though.

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great point! Yes, you should cut just outside the line because the blade will take about 1/8” of the wood. You can always cut twice but you can’t put the wood back after it’s cut. Old saying “measure twice, cut once”.
      Finish needs to be more accurate it when I used to be a framer, the guys would yell measurements to the cut guy telling them to leave or cut the line just for this reason if they needed to piece tighter or a little loose.

    Good morning. Ok if I need a 12 inch piece of crown going from a straight cut to a 45 inside corner should I cut the 45 first and than measure the long point of the molding . To the straight cut ? I hope I explained that right cause this is one of the things that’s making me nuts.

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I am understanding correctly then , yes I would cut the 45 first and then measure. If possible cut it bigger than you need. This way you can always take a little off if needed but, you can’t put it back on if your short😀

      Yes. The terminology is still the same although, crown molding is harder to do than traditional trim or baseboard. I am admittedly not great at it. The way I learned to measure and cut has you flipping the piece upside down on your miter saw to cut at the correct angle.

    Hello, I have a question what blade do you recommend for that cut? I have a 10inch 90 teeth and it ate three my wood because the border is pretty thin. What would you recommend?

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what type of wood you are cutting? Was the blade new and sharp? If you are cutting trim or hardwood and need a nice smooth cut then you should get a fine finish blade. It is it for rough framing then you can just use a framing blade. When you purchase them they all say what material each blade should be used for.

    hey brotha. lol im back for a question. lol i asked one before ur answers spoke to me i got it the way you answered . other dudes just confused the issue and made more lost . im just cutting some thin molding trim for a screen door i re screened and i wanna seal the bead lanes around the screen so thye stay in there and it copmpletes the door top n bottom. Doing the 4 cuts 45's i get that etc do i lay these flat or stand em up bevel style like u were showing. is there a general rule when ur cutting these 45s ..do i always lay it on saw as to how its going to lay on the door or whatever piece im attaching them ?? wasnt sure when or what situation called for bevel cut vs regular flat cuts u kno what i mean. thanks bro rancid rules dude. sorry if my question isnt clear im not clear in the head most days lol jk

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends if how the wood is going to sit on the door. If it’s gonna sit flat you can just cut 45’s. If it’s gonna sit on it’s side then you need to move the saw position to 45 and that gives it a bevel. Hope that helps? ✊🏼

    cool rancid rules man. love em. can i as k what maybe a dumb question i get how the 45 match up etc . but how do i determine , based on my project , before i even start how long more or less to start with to even mark the pieces for the mitre cuts. like say i have 10 1/2 all around, do i add length to the cut of each to fulfill the perfect angle how doe sthat work or how do i detrmenine what number to settle on for the 45 degree cuts in lenghth. same as the projects 10 1/2 or am i adding to make up for the angled cuts. is there a general formula to plug in? sorry i hope i asked the question right. im new at this shit.

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey David , I hope I can answer correctly for you. Whatever the total size of your project is, let’s say outside dimensions of a box that is 2’x2’ or 24”x24” square, this would be your long point on a 45 degree (miter). If you cut your 1st piece at 45 degree you would pull your measurement from that long point and make a mark at 24”. Now cut a 45 degree back toward the end you cut. This would be 24” or 2’ long to long. If you repeat that 4 times you will have basically a square like a picture frame with all corners mitered at 45 degrees. Your overall length of whatever your cutting whether it’s trim or 2x4 is the long point and will be the outside dimension of your project. The thickness of the material your using may make the 45 degree angle longer but it depends what you are making and how long it is if it will be an issue. Hope this helps a little. Let me know. Good luck ! ✊🏼

    Any idea why I cut 2 45s on baseboard and they don't go together right. My saw is designed to cut up to a 50 degree angle.

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the corner could be out of square. A lot of times they are. Is it at an inside or outside corner? At outside corners you can glue and nail them together and slide them in place. At an inside corner you may have to cheat or adjust your 45 if it’s not square. Get it as close as you can and caulk the gap. One other thing on inside corners is called coping. This is where one piece goes in square with no 45 and the other get notched to sit over it. I have a video on baseboard that shows it or you can look up how to cope a corner doing baseboard.

    Thank you, I really appreciate this, but wondering what instances you would use some of these cuts, like the bevel. I want to get a beginner small saw, but scared to death if them. I want to make a headboard with miter corners, but not sure how to measure the ends, do I cut the long end where I want the headboard to end or will that be too long?

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bevel cuts can depend on the width of the board mostly. If for instance you have a 2x8 or bigger and you try to cut a 45 degree cut on the flat side of the board, you can only bevel cut it on the miter saw because if you stand the board on end it wouldn’t fit under the blade. The overall length you need should be the long point of you cut on the flat or a bevel. I hope this helps you !

    • @johnnyworks5446

      Are you attaching them to the face of the cabinet doors or around the outside of them?
      If it will be the same size as it is now nailed to the face of the door, then you need to measure the top or bottom and make those pieces long point to long point. Then do the same with the sides. That should look and work like a picture frame would.

    Thank you so much for this. No one teaches this in their videos that I've watched. One quick question. Do you cut on the line, inside of it or outside of it? Thanks!

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks for watching Sue! So cutting on the line , before or after depends on which side you measured from. For instance if you hooked your tape measure on left end of the board and pulled say 24" , then you make a line and cut on the other side of it away from where you pulled your 24" measurement. If you cut on the same side of the line that you pull from then you will always be at least an 1/8" short because the saw blade is typically 1/8" thick> So always cut past the line from the direction you pull from. Hope this helps you. Thanks again

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. Mark and cut your material, now instead of hooking your tape measure on the end, just hold it on the short end of the cut and pull your measurement. After you mark it, cut on your line but away from it. Sounds complicated if you are new but, you can always experiment with a scrap piece of wood first.

    How do you find the inside dimension. Short to short

    • @johnnyworks5446
      @johnnyworks5446  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hard to explain in words and not visually but, think of a framed picture or painting on your wall. The wood that is around the painting is made up of 45 degree angle cuts. If you took a tape measure and measured the longest part of the wood from end to end that would be long point to long point. On that same piece of trim/wood, if you measure the shortest point to the shortest point that would be a short to short measurement. The easiest way is to practice or cut a practice piece before you cut your actual real piece.
