I was taught this story in Church as a small child, down to the last detail. I was old enough to understand how warped and twisted it was. The most disturbing part was that the minister taught this story as a good and moral thing, in that the girls were selflessly saving humanity by getting their father drunk and raping him. As I got older, I realized it was a parable and not history, but the ministers believed every word of it was "inerrantly true" and historically accurate. My question is, how can you believe this actually happened and is good and virtuous, and still maintain your sanity?
My opinion is, you can't. Teaching this as good and moral to children is inflicting child abuse on them.....

When I was a kid I was forced to attend church every Sunday morning and Thursday night. As a child, I was put into a Sunday school program. We were NOT supposed to read ahead in the Bible, and we also skipped certain verses. Needless to say, I didn't follow that rule. On the week we discussed Sodom and Gomorrah we barely even opened the Bible. Basically, we were just told that the people of Sodom were sexually depraved. Men were "kissing" men and women were "kissing" women, etc., and it made god sad. For disobeying him, god destroyed the city, saving only those who were righteous. Thus, homosexuality is bad. I went home and read the full story. I was only ten at this time, but I fully understood the concept of rape and homosexuality. When I went back the next Sunday I spoke to my Sunday school teacher about it. I pointed out the hypocrisy, the rape, and the inconsistencies. Instead of getting answers to my questions, I received 10 demerit points and punishment for reading ahead. -_-

Atheist. I was more agnostic when I was a child, but now I'm an atheist. Until I see some evidence I'm quite certain there's no god(s), and I live my life as though there isn't.

Atheist and agnostic are quite different. An atheist lacks faith in God, believes there is no god, or lacks awareness of gods. An agnostic either believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a god or is non-committal on the issue. The difference may seem small, but atheism and agnosticism are actually vastly different worldviews.

Religion is definitely toxic, but it's more a question of whether you think there might be a God or gods, or if you're convinced there's no hint of a supernatural anything. If you think there _could_ be a god or afterlife or anything of that nature, you're probably agnostic. If you believe there's no such thing as any supernatural existence or entities, you're an atheist. Atheists require proof for their beliefs, and if it isn't presented they don't believe it. Agnostics tend to hold the idea that we'll never know if there's a supernatural universe. They don't follow any set religion, but they believe there _could_ be something out there. Atheists are convinced there's nothing.

it’s hard to understand why God would allow these two terrible incidents to occur. We are told in 1 Corinthians 10:11 that the record of the Old Testament is meant as an “example” to us. In other words, God gives us the whole truth about biblical characters, their sin, their failures, their victories and good deeds, and we are to learn from their example, what to do and what not to do. In fact, this is one of the ways God teaches us what we need to know in order to make good choices as believers. We can learn the easy way by knowing and obeying God’s Word, we can learn the hard way by suffering the consequences of our mistakes, or we can learn by watching others and “taking heed” from their experiences.

There are many inuedos in the bible that we as modern people just don't get. For example 'look upon a man's nakedness' means to rape someone. Noah's son Shem looked upon his fathers nakedness. In other words Noah was raped by his own son. Noah then cursed Shem. Whether that story is a story teaching against incest or homosexuality I'd up to personal hermanuetics.

What really struck me about this story when I first read it (I guess I was about 12 or 13 at the time), is that God turned Lot's wife into a pillar of salt for merely looking back at the city, yet there was no punishment at all for Lot and his daughters committing incest......

    • @robert123ro
      @robert123ro 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Lot died in poverty and misery being the father of two wicked clans. Perhaps God let them be so that we can see the outcome of their choices. I guess he regretted deeply the choice he made when splitting from Abraham.
Lot's wife didn't just merely looking back, she felt sorry they left their home and riches. She valued the life in Sodom more than morality and God. God gave her a chance by forcefully drag her out of Sodom, but her heart was still there.

Sodom was on the shores of the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea - actually a lake - has an extremely high salt content and as it dries leaves salt deposits on its shores of various shapes and sizes. Tour guides routinely point out ones that might have been "Lot's wife." There's no deep symbolism. It's just that the ignorant scribes who wrote that story lived in an area with unusual geological formations that they couldn't understand so they invented a miracle story to explain their origin. It got included in the bible along with dozens of other fairy tales with no historical basis whatsoever.

As someone who was indoctrinated with this garbage, I recall this entire story except the sons in law. I do, however, remember this is the same man whose daughters thought God had destroyed the world so they got their father drunk to have sex with them in order to help repopulate the earth. Which makes no sense an old an could get it up drunk. It's like the story just keeps getting worse.
Aaaaand I spoke too soon. Should have waited until the end. If I'm being totally honest, this particular story is one of the main reasons I lost faith. It made me sick learning it as a kid and as I got older I kept asking my family to explain how that is righteousness. Disgusting. Also, Lot threw down his concubine who was gang raped all night and left dying at his doorstep the next morning. And no, no one gave a shit.

Every good it may seem to have done for you at some point of your life becomes reversed. It's literally a toxic relationship. How can they live with themselves choosing to lie to themselves their whole life... It saddens me. These people will never truly engage in real life. Never truly have the responsibility of their actions and moralities. Because they have skipped on one of the most important parts of life. Realising the desperation and loneliness of it all. Only then you find true strength in yourself. These people are afraid of their freedom. Okay I vented I'm good.

It's too bad DM didn't highlight how this is basically a xenophobic origin story. Lot's sons, Ammon and Moab, are the names of Israel's hated neighbors to the east.
So the Bible is saying those nations came from a drunken incest. It even explicitly says they were the fathers of the Ammonites and Moabites, so the Israelites would have had a hearty racist laugh whenever they heard this story.

    • @LeonMire

***** That's true. Nobody knew why exactly inbreeding was bad until Gregor Mendel's work was rediscovered in the 20th century. Virtually all societies have a strong taboo against incest, because it helps them survive, even though they don't know why.

When we were introduced to consciousness through the "tree of good and evil" it gave us the knowledge of what it means to be conscious about our actions such as what "Good and Evil" means to each individual. If you had two sons you held from birth and watched them grow and develop personality and one kills the other would you have that son killed for your own sense of justice? would you give him a chance to truly learn himself? Or would you try to make everything perfect? If everything is perfect there is no concept of good and evil. Set laws are the only thing that can make a conscious world perfect yet how long can a world be Orderly before there is a rebellion for freedom from set laws? Without the duality of Good & Evil, Order & Chaos, Connected Spirituality & Free Individual desire, you would have robots walking around without taking any conscious decision about their actions since you have nothing to expect when you already know perfection. Everything would always feel the same and appreciation would not exist since we would live forever . Would you like to live an eternity like that?

I have been in Bible study sessions and such where these passages are read, and nobody even bats an eye about the daughters being offered for gang rape, nor was that particular part discussed in any way. It's like they just pretended that it was just a small, inconsequential thing that's not even worth mentioning.
As an "apologist's advocate" I could come up with a rationalization: The situation was so scary and dangerous, with an angry mob outside the house kicking the door and ready to do anything, including burning the house down, that Lot panicked, did not think straight, and did the first stupid thing that came to his confused mind in that situation, and it was to try to appease the angry mob by offering his daughters in order to save the dignity of his guests. He might have only later realized how immensely stupid that was.
I'm sure many Christians who struggle with this particular passage would buy that. The problem is, however, that the event is not framed like that in the narrative. If it were, there would be mentions of Lot panicking, him regretting his offering later, and some kind of reminder that what he tried to do was wrong. However, it's not framed like that at all. Instead, it's framed in such a manner that what Lot did was the right thing (or, at the very least, not wrong.)
There's actually a different part of the Bible where a very similar situation happens and a man offers his own wife to be gang-raped, and this time she is raped and killed. The story only goes downhill from there. (Yes, this is really there. Look it up.)

God can't stop people from interacting with the world they live in. When we were introduced to consciousness through the "tree of good and evil" it gave us the knowledge of what it means to be conscious about our actions, such as what "Good and Evil" means to each individual. If you had two sons you held from birth, you watched them grow and develop their personality then one kills the other would you have that son killed for your own sense of justice? would you give him a chance to truly learn himself? Or would you try to make everything perfect? If everything is perfect there is no concept of good and evil. Set laws are the only thing that can make a conscious world perfect yet how long can a world be Orderly before there is a rebellion for freedom from set laws? Without the duality of Good & Evil, Order & Chaos, Connected Spirituality & Free Individual desire, you would have robots walking around without taking any conscious decision about their actions since you have nothing to expect when you already know perfection. Everything would always feel the same and appreciation would not exist since we would live forever . Would you like to live an eternity like that?

    • @cheagan
      @cheagan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not my point at all.
What I said was, if you think the Bible is a collection of morality lessons, you haven't read it. It portrays people - sinners - in an unapologetically factual manner. What kind of stupid "man-made" religion goes around giving out books that tell all about how their "founding fathers" were a bunch of philandering, hypocritical, scheming, bribing, murderous, idolaters? As for your question, please understand one thing. We're talking about a people group some 3400 years ago that wandered the Negev Desert (one of the most inhospitable climates on earth) for FORTY years, and then were able to very deliberately march into Canaan and DECIMATE the indigenous populace living in fortified cities. Do you suppose the two sides were armed equally? Where might an essentially nomadic culture produce a foundry? Perhaps they borrowed one! No, it was stone age vs. bronze at first. And, yes, "Moses" did order the slaughter of men, women, children, cattle, sheep, donkeys, you-name-it, not on the basis that they were "worshiping a different god", but that they were performing absolutely detestable rituals *in the name of* those gods. Look up Molech, and how that mother-effer was worshiped. Or the "cremation of care" ceremony. So my answer is, it was not Moses who gave the order, but God. Because as soon as the fledgling nation got half a chance to join in the pagan fun (and we're talking a sex and fertility cult, so it was fun!), they did. These were not spiritual giants, but flesh-and-blood men and women, subject to weakness and temptation. But as long as they remained faithful to God, they kicked ass and took names.
But does your question have more to do with the disparity between the Bible and the Constitution? As in, how can a "Christian" nation condone the worship of other gods? I don't know. I do know that this has never been a "Christian" nation, despite what the religious Right says, and that the parallels that they draw between Israel and America, and the co-opting of the ancient land-based Covenant promises of Israel by American Evangelicals, is wrong. Make no mistake: America was created by men, for one purpose and with one goal in mind - PROFIT. Don't believe the George Washington "cherry tree" stories. Was the Providence of God at work? Most definitely. But for what purpose? His, not ours. Our prosperity is based on derivatives and leveraging, i.e., credit. When our chicken come home to roost, we'll have exactly nowhere to run.

This coming from a conservative Christian. Those who interpret the scriptures fundamentally believe all of that is true. I interpret the bible contextually. .AFTER DEATH...WHAT???
You know we’re just passing through this world to get
to The next, whether it be Heaven or Hell.
Most people do not want to know this
BUT IT’S TRUE. Like it or not, there is a HELL!
      And “YOU” make the choice.
      You may think to yourself:
      I’ve never hurt anyone.
I am no different than anyone else.
I do good things for people.
Heaven and Hell are on Earth.
“Nice try!” I’ve heard them all!
But the bible says “THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO
      GET TO HEAVEN!
But there are many ways that lead to HELL!
and You can try to say that no one ever warned you about Hell, BUT YOU HAVE JUST
      BEEN WARNED
WHEN YOU READ THIS AND NOW YOU ARE
      HELD ACCOUNTABLE.
Now it’s too late to act dumb.
You will be held responsible for
      being warned about Hell !!
WE ARE ALL SINNERS….sin is anything that
separates us from God. The bible tells us that any form
of idolatry, witchcraft, murder or murderous thoughts,
stealing, lying, adultery (sex outside of marriage), same
sex marriage, hatred, unforgiveness, etc…. are all sin.
God has seen every sin we have ever committed.
You Must accept Jesus Christ for your sins or
      HELL!!

Be willing to turn from sin and REPENT.
Believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins and

it’s hard to understand why God would allow these two terrible incidents to occur.

Longing for the past will make you forget to live in the present and compromise your future; all because table salt is a good preservative and illustrates the idea very well. Also, that pillar of salt couldn't have lasted long (unlike a pillar of stone) because of the rain - so the purpose was clear:absolute wiping out of her very existence.

Christians are told over and over and over again that the bible is the word of god--by people they trust. Perhaps they were brought up in a christian home, so from their earliest moments heard, "God is good" and "the Bible is the true word of God" from parents, pastors, youth ministers, church camp counselors, elders, deacons, and fellow church members. Or perhaps they were down and out and a Christian reached out to them during their time of need and made them feel wanted, offering them forgiveness in an unforgiving world. So they left drugs or alcohol or a life of crime or whatever situation was bringing them down and entered into a loving and supportive community. So why wouldn't they trust the people that helped them when they say, "God is good" and "the Bible is the true word of God." This indoctrination goes way deep into the believer, deeper and more firmly rooted than logic or reason. Thus, the Christian has lost the ability to step outside themselves and think objectively about stories such as Sodom and Gomorrah. After all, they've already been "saved," so they are already on the "right" side. Any effort to point out the atrocities and cruel behavior by the god of the bible is wasted since Christians are so indoctrinated by the "God is good" belief, so obviously "God" did the right thing. I mean, he is god, so it's got to be right, and we just can't understand his mysterious ways--or so the argument goes. Finally, it seems that the whole "Jesus dying for our sins" argument overrules any objection to cruelties in the old testament--in the Christian's mind.
Unfortunately, very few Christians will then be able to comprehend the obvious atrocities that the unbeliever so easily sees. I know; I used to be a born-again Christian.

orrrr maybe they believe it's the word of God because they've actually experienced its power in their lives and began a relationship with Jeus Christ? not because they were "brainwashed at a young age." Just a thought. Also, if you're gonna make such a biased statement, why not direct it at all religions? Why just Christianity?

    • @jodizee7009
      @jodizee7009 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Chickylala, let me ask you this: Why do people convert to Islam or Buddhism or Jainism or any other religion? Perhaps they've seen its power work in their lives. Perhaps they have even established a relationship with their creator.
Also, why do most people follow or convert to the dominant religion in their culture?
What do you make of a person who from childhood has heard over and over again, "God is good," The Bible (or Qu'ran or whatever holy book) is the Word of God. Don't you think these would have at least some biasing effect? How do you think a person who did not grow up hearing these things would react to the claims of Christianity (or Islam or whatever religion is being presented to them)?
And as for discussing Christians, well, I grew up in a conservative Christian household and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior at the age of 8. Rather than being biased, I spoke from my personal experience. Hmm, and what is biased about my statement--other than your belief that I am singling out Christians? Your personal experience does not address the issues I brought up; don't you think that repetition of doctrine from trusted authorities from an early age has at least some effect on the outcome of a persons's belief?

    • @jodizee7009
      @jodizee7009 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Chickylala and just to add, regardless of however biased you might think my statement is, what do YOU think of the claims of this and other videos that your God is barbaric and immoral? What is YOUR understanding of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah--especially in regard to the behavior of Lot and his daughters?

Jodi Zee Jesus who is God, who never lies, said that the devil, satan, the evilone is the ruler of this world, and the father of all lies. You and many others have accepted the lies. People convert to false religions, heresy, Protestantism etc. because the father of lies is smart and cunning , he sees to it that enough truth is mixed with the lies that will cost people their souls, so they swallow the evil. Without God's grace and protection, each person is powerless to resist, you happen to be just one such person. I do pity you.
Christ founded only 1 church. FACT !
There are about 40,000 'protestant churches' that never existed until about 500 years ago, and each and every one was founded by men and women, NOT Jesus Christ. Jesus did pray to His Heavenly Father we who trust in Him be one, as He and the Father are one, and so there is still one, holy, catholic and apostolic church, not 40,000 heretic started churches. 1 versus 40,000 ? Satan tears apart, God unites. You belonged to the heretics, try the one true church next time. Jesus promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

Lot displays poor judgment again when he abandons the town of Zoar, where he and his daughters have taken refuge. Fearing that it will be destroyed-despite the angels’ assurances that it would be spared on his account-he takes his two daughters to live alone in a cave in the hills. Isolated in the cave with their father, the daughters mistakenly conclude that they are the last people left alive on the earth. If Lot knows that only a few cities were destroyed and that soon the family can go out and find a new place to settle, he surprisingly fails to share this information with his daughters.

i get what you are saying just , saying its not totally random. turning her into a pilar of salt was liek a "clear sign" that god did it. salt being the rare commodity it was back then is also why the superstition of tossing salt over your left shoulder when you spil it it. the idea was that salt was so rare only the devil would cause some one to spill it , so you toss salt over your left shoulder to ward him off. sounds rediculous to modern people especially in light fo teh fact that salt is actually one of the most common minerals on the planet ancient man didn't know this though.
