Fantastic effort! I've definitely been there before too. It's hard going. Ultras however, tend to help you to pace things better and eat and hydrate better. Just finished the Highland Fling. 53 miles, 11 hours. Best run of my life!
Hats off fella, that looked brutal. Running downhill can be a killer as you say, due to an 'eccentric contraction' where it forces the quad to lengthen as you try to contract it. Really takes it's toll if you haven't trained for it. Missed Nixon but good call to be on the safe side.
As if fell running isn’t hard enough when you’re built like a whippet? Being built like an Olympic rower who’s already tarnished the golden rule of tapering for this gruesome of fell racing? Dude! You’re a glutton for punishment! Magnificent scenery though! Well done Mark😎👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽
The cramping make me smile =) I know the feeling my last Ironman I had cramps for the last 30K of my marathon. I might be strange but kinda miss it =) Atm I am full out bike and Str work no more running. but vids like this kinda make me take it up again =) somday hehe
Thats an incredible achievement Mark - massive kudos for pressing on and getting it done. And also a sensational edit which tells the story perfectly against a beautiful backdrop 💪✊💯
No, but I've felt like I was going to. 👏👏👏💪 That looked painful, the spectacular scenery would have been a nice detraction going anything other than down. I agree, although fun and skilful, (the trails near me are rugged and after the recent storm, are covered in fallen trees.) They are a killer on the legs, actually the whole body! I see you listen to music as you go. What's your play list? And don't say the Rocky sound tracks. 🤔🤣.. Once again an above average effort and better than most channel. 😊👏👏
Actually I don't normally listen to anything - often races don't allow it so I like to "not need it". I had the headset just in case I got bored.....And when I do listen, it's always podcasts unless it's Rocky for a hard sprint finish. This time, half way round I did 45 mins of Sam Harris talking about aliens 😁
Hey Mark, love your channel, found it a few months after starting my running journey. love the incline map on the screen. An overlay showing your current location on the incline map would be cool to know where you are during your race. keep up the great content!
Well done, that looked really tough 🙁 you would of loved the old South Downs 80 trail run which they run in the 90s , it was Petersfield to Eastbourne around this time of year, sunshine night running and lots of hills to go up and down.
Great video mate....I did a version of the race years ago, it was tough! I have an 8 month old Parson...he's a 'runaholic' but a wonderful running partner. Hope to catch at this event in the next few years once I return from the USA. Keep up the good work. Rgds Mike.
Great effort mate. I suffered in very similar ways, the cramp was horrendous and I was completely toasted at the end. Brilliant event and organisers too.
You have totally transformed my future plans for fitness. After getting the Fenix 7x Solar (because of you...) I now find more tips, tricks and inspirations with in the software to keep me going. So, I started proper jogging this week following one of the Garmin challenges. Thanks Mark
Fantastic video and Congrats on another successful venture! Too bad Nixon had to sit this one out, but it appears that was the wiser of choices. Have a nice day.
signed up for this one in March - just trying to make the cutoff! did the santa 12k and the scenery was amazing so hoping the weather will be good so i can at least take in the views
I’m fortunate enough to live in Crickhowell so all of that is on my doorstep! Still doesn’t mean I’m a fantastic mountain runner 😂 Your videos are top notch and have honestly helped me in a few areas of my training Thanks
Great video and showed off the lovely countryside around here as well. All I could think of watching it was - just get on a mountain bike - it makes the whole thing much more fun! :-) Well done though, something I will definitely never do!
Great video Mark. Inspired by your efforts I've entered the 10 mile Cattle Creep trail race near Milton Keynes this Sunday and half marathon trail on the South Downs in mid March. I'd love to tackle the Brecon Beacons but in my mid sixties feel it would too much for me. Filled with trepidation for Sunday as only ran a few 10k's over the past year. 😲
@@MarkLewisfitness Ran the Cattle Creep in Wolverton 10 mile race in spite of the storm conditions. Finished in one hour and 39.10. Not bad for my first time at this distance in over 20 years. 6th out 12 in my age group. Not above average, but something to aim for. Really enjoyed it. Half trail marathon mid March on South Downs with four more weeks of training.👍 Cheers Mark
@@MarkLewisfitness Hi Mark, we ran Queen Elizabeth Country Park yesterday. I finished my first trail half marathon in 2 hours 42. Conditions were atrocious after persistent rain the previous night. Very muddy trails, fell twice. Gillian finished the 9k. Nixon would have loved it. Sadly not 'Above Average' for me this time, however happy we got it done. Cheers
Last week I’m pretty sure I died from a leg cramp on my first 8k in years….still dead in fact but you inspire me and will soon be challenging myself with some longer runs and events.
Hi Mark! Thx for your video, this is the second one I have watched, OCE sparta brought me here :) First of all, Gratulation! I started to run 2 months ago, i have sport experience (gym, run, swim etc), but lately i didnt do sh..t, so it was a rough "restart". Since i like hiking (started a year ago) , i (have always) wanted to try trail running, but i never had the courage to do it, until 2 weeks ago, when I did a hike and mixed up with jogging, without proper gears sadly. Let me tell you about my story of this hike, and how does it fit in to the picture: My results: 33 km, 1550 m Gain, Elapsed time: 6h40m (moving time 6h15m.) (My age: 31yo) I did not prepare especially for the event, just went out hiking straight away on a sunny saturday, Tbh: i almost died, the last few km-s were hell (Like in your video). And i was ashamed of myself, i was like i need to practice more, cause i cannot be this exhusted. Then i saw the results at your video (24:28, thx for sharing), i saw how a very well prepared and fit man like yourself can struggel, and at that time I learned, that my performance was not that bad, And it is okey to be half zombie after a hike like that. Thx for sharing your story, thoughts. It helped me a lot! Cheers, Aaron.
I knew the cramps where coming.....I had electrolyte tabs, food, water......just only so many times my legs can put up with me landing on them. Going to get UNDER 100kg for my next race!
Downhills only seem easy, they are the ones pounding your legs into a pulp. You don't feel it much until your legs suddenly give up. You seem a quite strong downhill runner considering your size. Impressive! Next time im in in the UK I might look for a limitless event. They look fun!
Hoping that you will be wanting to want to go faster when it levels off... Amen to that lol Well done, a cracking effort! Don't envy that drive home after that though... you're going to need a "support team"! Keep up the good work 💪
Can relate to the 'I miss my dog' part. Mine can't frun more than 5k currently as she has lost a leg, and I felt the same when doing my last race which she should've done with me! 😂
Another great video, do you have any info on calories in, what you ate/drank vs what the Garmin said you used calorie wise?? Also.....could have worn the Wahoo watch on the other wrist ;)
I do have to get around to using that watch!!! Calories were pretty simple - Garman said I burnt 4000. I ate about 1400. To 300 cal flapjacks, four gels, couple of banana pieces. And that is right at my limit before I over eat. In simple terms, on the bike I try to replace 50% of calories burnt (it is much easier to die jest food sat on the bike) and running I try to replace 25%. Hence running is a tricky balance of having enough food and feeling sick.
Great video and effort Mark. Do you use an external mic 🎤 with your Gopro? The sound quality is really good. Really good to hear all the huffing & puffing 😀
I didn’t, I have experimented with that in the past but it’s too much hassle. Instead I have a foam surround that goes over the go pro to cut out wind noise. It is not perfect but with a little background music it becomes perfectly usable!
Hi mark - I saw you carried a whistle on your first aid kit. Just wondered if you knew your Salomon rucksack comes with one already attached which would pass kit check (if you want to be a bit more weight weenie)
Massive fan of your channel and am often going back over older vids such as this one. What setup did you have on your Garmin? Did you use ultra or trail run etc and did you input your course prior to the race as i love that you can see the hills you have to come on your watch! Im doing Man vs Coast which i pretty much signed up for after you did that video so would like to habe so something similar on my Fenix 6x pro. Thanks for the content!
Hi, I just run for any run - basically the Garman is always tracking everything it possibly can no matter what setting you are using. So the only reason to jump between one setting and another is if you want different displays showing. You could for example, set up a 5K run display that showed only your overall time. And then a ultra run display that showed much more data. I tend to want the same information however far I'm running so just use the standard run setting tweaked the way I like it. And yes, I download the GPS route before if it's available and stick it into the watch. I can't remember if man the coast make the routes available on GPS before the race? If they do, definitely worth getting hold of!
Hey Mark, just catching up on some videos of yours I haven't yet seen. As usual, enjoying the content. Keep it up. In exchange for my kind words, I have a question to throw your way (cheeky.) Have you ever had a post-race wobble? Recently, I did the Maverick Terrex Exmoor Half-Mara. It was a lot harder than I had thought yet finished it. The following week, I felt awful. I put this down to not drinking/eating enough during the race and it was hot/hilly (pre-race was all good.) All week, I wanted to sleep. Whenever I got home from work I would fall on the sofa and take a nap (until the wife woke me up, ha!) I never do this, and combined with feeling depressed, loss of interest in food and to get back to training, I put it down to fatigue. Had I damaged my central-nervous-system? Was it just mental fatigue and not physical? I felt better the day before I then ran Snowdon the following Saturday. Yes, I know, the events were too close together but I completed them both but admittedly would have been better off doing just one (plus they didn't give us a medal for the second one, boo!) I'd be interested to her your thoughts on this - a video around pushing yourself in a race and some signs to watch out for if you're over-training/over-reaching/fatigued, etc. I have to say, I did feel a bit concerned feeling as I did for that week and still not back to 100%. Cheers fella
Been trying to get back into running recently after a few years of focusing on eating too many burgers. This looks like a great run and having grown up in Wales I might target this for next year. Sadly my dog is 13 years old and would probably never forgive me if I dragged her along.
Hi Mark, recent subscriber and enjoying the content so far. Congrats on the 10k subs. Maybe a slightly odd question but I'm thinking of starting a channel myself at the grand old age of 54. Thing that holds me back mainly is I know nothing about film making/video editing etc. Wondered what your level of knowledge of those things were when you started and how you learned ?
Blimey, good effort Mark. I appreciate why you have the minimal shoes, but on such a long race wouldn't just a bit of comfort help? Your knees will thanks you in 10 years time.
It's a good question.....If I run in cushioned shoes I get shin splints or ankle or knee pain. In minimalist shoes, I'm fine. I ran in 5 Fingers at 330 lbs to loose weight and have always found low cushioned, zero drop shoes solve any pain issues. And here, the need for excellent "feel" is really important. Cushioned shoes would take away my sense of whats underfoot (dangerous on tough terrain) - The shock that my legs endure on these events is 100% down to the descents at speed at 100kg......no amount of cushioning will stop my quads having to tense up and slow my bodyweight. So, odd though it seems......I feel good today, and just ran a short recovery run.....because I have such lightweight shoes. I had 3 knee ops before I was 35 and had non stop pain......having had a knee ache in years since I dropped weight and ran!
Rat race events -man v coast takes place first weekend of July. Marathon distance event from the south coast of cornwall to the north coast and then all the way down to lands end - literally, in and out of the sea at times!!!
Mark that’s a hill not a mountain 😂😂 not saying I could do that though. You did amazing and I’m not a runner (although I want to be one day). But after spending a couple of days in Snowdonia, I now know what a mountain is and what a hill is 😅😂
@@MarkLewisfitness that's watching TH-cam for you, I watched a film called unbreakable about the western States 100 and was hooked on ultra running from then on, only trouble was I'd been sedantary for 20 years, at 18 stone and 5ft 4inch I was obese so I just started walking then running lost 8 stone in 6 months did my first ever race which was the 50 miler on Saturday, that's now qualified me to run GB Ultras Snowdon Ultra 100, that's 100 miles with 25000ft of ascent. So in 1 year I've will have gone from couch to 100 mile ultra in 12 months 👍
Brutal day. I’ve been there. The man with the hammer can hurt badly sometimes! For the bast leg cramp video watch Mark Richardson cricket cramping. It’s hilarious.
Well it certainly hasn't made me want to do anything remotely close to running but it was very entertaining as ever. Do you think your pace at the start was a little too enthusiastic or was it a case of however fast you went it would have been a struggle towards the end? Good effort though!
Question - I think my pacing was about right. Unfortunately, my weight (which is a bit larger than the average hill runner) means that the descents hammer my legs over time. In a sense, getting a move on in the beginning while they still work is better 😂
Your question reminds me-I really have to put together a list of stuff I use as people are always asking! They are Oakley radars with a prism lens. I got them because they sit quite high which is good for cycling because your head is tilted forward them but they also work really well for running because with those on, and my cap, my face is nice and shaded.
I dont want to be too much of a spoilsport but when you talk about being in the top half you are actually specifically talking about Above Median, not Above Average. One a serious note, your videos are great and I really appreciate what you do. I'm a bigger guy that's run short distances for a long time but never felt ready to go more than about 6-7 miles. Your videos are giving me motivation to train for a marathon
I love that you talk about above average even in these videos🤣 as every person doing this would already be far above average even the bloke that came last
Small bit of advice from someone who also suffers a great deal from the heat in the mountains: stop wearing dark clothes! It made a world of difference to me

Fantastic effort! I've definitely been there before too. It's hard going. Ultras however, tend to help you to pace things better and eat and hydrate better. Just finished the Highland Fling. 53 miles, 11 hours. Best run of my life!
That fly buzzing around you for the entirity of that event was wrecking my head not to mind yours... Well done, some effort
Stunning colors. Wow. I wouldn't have the patience to film and run or cycle. Nicely done!
It's actually a nice distraction on longer events!
@@MarkLewisfitness seriously?? Not being a smart ass, but it looks like a lot of work....a lot of extra stuff. Hats off.
Nice one man!! Gave me a bit of a boost that i wasn’t the only one who literally had nothing left over the last hill and back down it 😂
Incredibly well stabilised footage. I won't go as far as saying it looks fun!!!
Absolutely a way above average legend 👊🏾
Nice clip! I loved it!! I’m here for the running So keep them coming 😆
The cramping make me smile =) I know the feeling my last Ironman I had cramps for the last 30K of my marathon. I might be strange but kinda miss it =) Atm I am full out bike and Str work no more running. but vids like this kinda make me take it up again =) somday hehe
Cramp for 30 K sounds pretty nasty.😆
Gratz Mark, phenomenal effort, great video and slick editing! 💪🏴👍
Thanks, takes 10 times longer to edit than run it 😂
Well done , your going to love the hills in cornwall and it didn't look fun but your'e having a great time )
Cant wait - Man V Coast......going to be epic!
I was lokking for any movies from these race. I have done 40 miles in these day which was my first ultra.
Congratulations for complete 👊
Can't imagine doing that far - well done 🙏
Inspiring as always!!
Hey Mark, love your channel, found it a few months after starting my running journey. love the incline map on the screen. An overlay showing your current location on the incline map would be cool to know where you are during your race. keep up the great content!
Cracks me up how focused you are at everything except for right before events 😂
I do need to work on that part 😂
Well done, that looked really tough 🙁 you would of loved the old South Downs 80 trail run which they run in the 90s , it was Petersfield to Eastbourne around this time of year, sunshine night running and lots of hills to go up and down.
I've never done a night run and can't wait to! Me and Nixon had one lined up for last year but got cancelled. Will do one this year for sure!
Miss my dog , felt sad .Brilliant video and run , well done
Great video mate....I did a version of the race years ago, it was tough! I have an 8 month old Parson...he's a 'runaholic' but a wonderful running partner. Hope to catch at this event in the next few years once I return from the USA. Keep up the good work. Rgds Mike.
Parsons are superb runners! Breed to keep up with horses on a hunt so unless you are faster than a horse....the dog is happy!
Great effort mate. I suffered in very similar ways, the cramp was horrendous and I was completely toasted at the end. Brilliant event and organisers too.
Looked brutal. Great job.
Great vid Mark 👍
Great video and showed off the lovely countryside around here as well. All I could think of watching it was - just get on a mountain bike - it makes the whole thing much more fun! :-) Well done though, something I will definitely never do!
A mtb for the downs would have been cool 😎
Great video Mark. Inspired by your efforts I've entered the 10 mile Cattle Creep trail race near Milton Keynes this Sunday and half marathon trail on the South Downs in mid March. I'd love to tackle the Brecon Beacons but in my mid sixties feel it would too much for me. Filled with trepidation for Sunday as only ran a few 10k's over the past year. 😲
Awesome! Update me on how you get on. I love hearing stuff like this 👍🏼🏃♂️
@@MarkLewisfitness Ran the Cattle Creep in Wolverton 10 mile race in spite of the storm conditions. Finished in one hour and 39.10. Not bad for my first time at this distance in over 20 years. 6th out 12 in my age group. Not above average, but something to aim for. Really enjoyed it. Half trail marathon mid March on South Downs with four more weeks of training.👍 Cheers Mark
@@FreeLancerLondon awesome to hear. And running in the storm sounds way more fun than just boring old rain 😁
Hi Mark! Thx for your video, this is the second one I have watched, OCE sparta brought me here :)
First of all, Gratulation!
Let me tell you about my story of this hike, and how does it fit in to the picture:
My results: 33 km, 1550 m Gain, Elapsed time: 6h40m (moving time 6h15m.) (My age: 31yo) I did not prepare especially for the event, just went out hiking straight away on a sunny saturday,
Tbh: i almost died, the last few km-s were hell (Like in your video).
Cheers,
Aaron.
Amazing footage and fantastic effort...thats some some serious elevation over 32k! Hats off for finishing
Great effort! 👍And heartbreaking when you said that you would miss Nixon. But no sympathy regarding the cramps. 😈
I knew the cramps where coming.....I had electrolyte tabs, food, water......just only so many times my legs can put up with me landing on them. Going to get UNDER 100kg for my next race!
@@MarkLewisfitness I know you're a fan of the Altras…but have you considered wearing more cushioned shoes for those exceptional cases?
@@TGTD100 I’ve tried and it doesn’t help, I’ll explain why in a separate video soon on my odd footwear choice 😂
@@MarkLewisfitness I'm looking forward to the video. 👍
Downhills only seem easy, they are the ones pounding your legs into a pulp. You don't feel it much until your legs suddenly give up. You seem a quite strong downhill runner considering your size. Impressive!
Next time im in in the UK I might look for a limitless event. They look fun!
Awesome, and inspiring
Another great video!! I'm actually going to start trail running thanks to you!!! I've started reading Tiny Habits after reading Atomic Habits!
Trail running is WAY more fun than I make it look here 😂 That race beat the hell out of me !
Epic!
Does a placebo have the same effect if you know it's a placebo? IE last summit gel.
Hoping that you will be wanting to want to go faster when it levels off... Amen to that lol
Well done, a cracking effort! Don't envy that drive home after that though... you're going to need a "support team"!
Keep up the good work 💪
Cruise control on, chewing on flap jacks 😂
Can relate to the 'I miss my dog' part. Mine can't frun more than 5k currently as she has lost a leg, and I felt the same when doing my last race which she should've done with me! 😂
Fantastic video Mark, almost inspired me to give it a go…..well done you bloody fantastic effort 💪👍
Trail running. There's just nothing like it. Rests my soul just looking at it.
Beautiful
Hi,
I just run for any run - basically the Garman is always tracking everything it possibly can no matter what setting you are using.
@@MarkLewisfitness Appreciate the info. Thanks again.
Hey Mark, just catching up on some videos of yours I haven't yet seen. As usual, enjoying the content. Keep it up. In exchange for my kind words, I have a question to throw your way (cheeky.)
Have you ever had a post-race wobble?
Yes, I know, the events were too close together but I completed them both but admittedly would have been better off doing just one (plus they didn't give us a medal for the second one, boo!)
I'd be interested to her your thoughts on this - a video around pushing yourself in a race and some signs to watch out for if you're over-training/over-reaching/fatigued, etc. I have to say, I did feel a bit concerned feeling as I did for that week and still not back to 100%.
Cheers fella
The cramps may be a back issue from downhills, sciatic nerves also. I get them on hard downhills, am 90k.
He knew nothing and learned as he went along. Go for it - hopefully you already have!
@@MarkLewisfitness Thanks Mark, well answered.
Did I hear you say your coming to Cornwall?
Rat race events -man v coast takes place first weekend of July. Marathon distance event from the south coast of cornwall to the north coast and then all the way down to lands end - literally, in and out of the sea at times!!!
I’m down here in gods country so will look out for you! FYI keep smashing out the content! I’m also a ‘big lad’ trying to be super fit!
Just curious about the black thing around your neck and the purpose of it
Every time that music kicks in I'm expecting a story of an abandoned dog finding a new home...
I was tempted to bring a sheep home and pretend it was lost and needed nursing back to full health!
Mark that’s a hill not a mountain 😂😂 not saying I could do that though. You did amazing and I’m not a runner (although I want to be one day). But after spending a couple of days in Snowdonia, I now know what a mountain is and what a hill is 😅😂
I’m running my first half marathon tomorrow! (scrolling for reports of leg cramp deaths…)
Hi Mark, can I ask you the full name of the Salomon vest you recommended? I think I need to in-vest...😘 Soz my jokes are not as good as yours.
BTW. Massive effort
Nice job!!
I ran the 50 miler 😱 my first ever Ultra 😱
That’s nuts 😂 I’ve done a 50k before but only 4000ft off climb on the that. To do 50 miles with 11000ft is bonkers! Hats off to you!
@@Dmountaingoblin Watching TH-cam.....you should be making a bloody video! Those are mad numbers! How long did Sat take you?
@@MarkLewisfitness just over 16 hours my knee's didn't cope to well with the down hill in the later stages 😩😩
@Richard Wilcox respect 🙏 16hrs is hell of thing to endure. fair play 👍
Brutal day. I’ve been there. The man with the hammer can hurt badly sometimes! For the bast leg cramp video watch Mark Richardson cricket cramping. It’s hilarious.
Why was Bruce Lee so good at telling jokes?
Because if his punch line doesn't work, you still get a kick out of it.
Can i ask the make and model of the sunglasses?
Your question reminds me-I really have to put together a list of stuff I use as people are always asking! They are Oakley radars with a prism lens. I got them because they sit quite high which is good for cycling because your head is tilted forward them but they also work really well for running because with those on, and my cap, my face is nice and shaded.
You need to pin a little bug zapper to you! Lol
Too many flies !! Im out :D
Your videos are giving me motivation to train for a marathon
median is a type of average. you are describing the mean
dont mind me mate, just rattling through your videos...
I love that you talk about above average even in these videos🤣 as every person doing this would already be far above average even the bloke that came last
I can do 4500' in a day in 20 miles but not running. It takes me about 10 hrs.
Hi
Mark would you be able to confirm for us how much you weigh in KGs I don’t think you’ve mentioned it before 🤣
I died from a leg cramp. Yup. I’m dead.
Small bit of advice from someone who also suffers a great deal from the heat in the mountains: stop wearing dark clothes! It made a world of difference to me
Doesn't your arm hurt from holding up the camera the whole time there when you're talking? It just looks like it adds up overtime and gotta hurt, no?
Was this tougher than the 100k?
Different sort of tough. 100km was more draining. Took a week to recover
@@MarkLewisfitness Interesting to hear and thanks for the reply! The 100k seemed quite flat so I imagine having to work the same muscles for the whole event resulted in a longer recovery. In any case, congrats on both! My dream/goal is to do a 100k one day. Taking on my first marathon this October. Thanks for the content and all the best!
Go go go # your empty class room
