Impressive efford by Nixon, I honestly wouldn't have thought that was possible (yes, I'm not much of a dog person, love them, but not nearly enough to consider living with one, so I'm don't know too much)

This video made me cry. I'm more or less at Jenna's fitness level and it wouldn't cross my mind that I could achieve what she did. But MAYBE .... Maybe I could. I've lost 128 lbs and yesterday completed my 106th hike since 1/1/21, which was 15 km with a lot of elevation gain. But I've only started jogging about a week ago. Onward!

Mark I ran my first Park Run ever this week - most of the inspiration is down to yourself. Not fast by any stretch of the imagination, a solid 29mins and change, however course average is 30mins 27secs meaning I am above average!! As a 42 yo, 6'2", 236lbs male, I was very nervous and put it off for a few weeks to put in some extra training which I think helped. This has really given me a lot of confidence and will certainly be back each week to see how I progress. I don't post comments on TH-cam very often but you have helped me and inspired me. Really like the sensible and rational advice / content. Please keep it up and a podcast hosted by yourself would be really top notch. Thank you!
P.S Hearts On Fire - best training song ever.

That’s a great result for a first Parkrun - faster than mine was! And the beauty of being in the high 20s is that you can spend a good couple of years slowly chipping away and just aging backwards as you get better and better! Now that I am at a point where I never quite know how close to a PB I will get, I am genuinely quite jealous of people starting their journey just hacking away at the times 👍🏼

Loved this video - & really got your explanation & the graph explaining what it is you look to do - i.e. be better than average. Totally captures my aim in a way I'd never been able to explain as well as you did. I've been working through a list of challenges which started a couple of years ago - I was overweight, did zero exercise & was very unfit, but @53 decided it was time to turn things around. Initially lots of walking led to taking on 50k & then 100k walking challenges - losing 25kg along the way. I then learnt about ultra runners, was in awe of them & just knew that is what I wanted to do - so started learning to run last year. I worked my way through 5ks, 10ks, half marathons & just kept going; completed a 65k trail challenge, did well & absolutely loved it.......but knew my ultra running challenge ultimately meant doing a 100 miler......& in 22 weeks is my first, so am training for that.

Its impossible, attempting a mountain race, especially a long one, without the necessary endurance or training.
Unless your mountain fit, with the necessary endurance gained by long days out in the hills, then attempting a mountain race with no previous training, is most unwise.
This is exactly what i attempted when entering my first Peris Horseshoe race in Snowdonia.
Its a distance of just over 18miles, but its one of the most challenging fell races ive ever attempted.
The winner, finished in just over three hours, and it took me 6hrs 23min.
By far the toughest event ive ever done.

I almost did this very same hike three days ago. It was 24 miles, 7 hrs, 26 min, 4014 ft elevation gain/loss (out and back) 6,400 calories and 90% of it was just walking. Average HR was 132, Max 168. I only ran a few of the uphills, none of the easy flats or down hills. Trying to work up to 30 miles hiking hills. I should be able to do some running by years end. I dont want to rush it at 68 years old until I lose 10 more pounds. Last time I ran 4 miles of an 8 mile hike I hurt my abdominal floor.
Yeah, it's a pity we cannot go back in time. It takes a long time to build an aerobic base AND strength but I'm in better shape at 68 than I was at 40 and maybe even than when I was 30 but I *looked* OK at 30.

Laughed my ass off genuinely at your intro. Great stuff! Also, I've now signed a mental contract with myself: I can watch youtube, but only on the hometrainer. Did 10K on the thing while watching this. Now I "just" have to not break my contract. So far, the penalty of staying a slob didn't do much in that regard.

It's all about habits. My " normal " Sunday mountain runs are around 30k with over 1k elevation and it takes me between 2h40 to 2h45 to complete. But then again i'm 50 years old and been running since i was 14........

Love the channel!! My partner is also dabbling in joining me for the some trail runs. So far so good.
I just got myself a GoPro and would love to know the settings you use and also your process for uploading and editing videos. I have been giving it a go myself but it's pretty clunky, th-cam.com/video/a_kNppFfSW0/w-d-xo.html. Any advice would be awesome!
Thanks for all the content. Keeping me motivated!!

For a bit during the pandemic I was working in a sawmill, at one point during the winter my motorbike was out of action for a few weeks so I had to cycle there, 26 mile round trip with a 10 hour grueling shift in the middle. I hadn't been doing any cycling before that but had been running and going to the gym. First week destroyed me but I managed it just on my baseline fitness.
Unfortunately my foot is a weak point that stops me doing mad runs like this, I'm working on it but yeah, can't at the moment even though I know I'm physically capable if it wasn't going to guarantee a foot injury!

I tried to run 12 miles, while not being a runner, like at all. I had to walk slowly the last 3 miles. I could not walk (well, barely walked) for the next 2 days. Muscles in my feet gave in. Cardio was not a problem, but the feet. I got a cross trainer since and use it regularly to my own surprise, much safer choice for a dummy like me.

Your wife has a couple of advantages. She is smaller and lighter and she is a woman.
Physiologically women can just keep going when it comes to endurance events, I've read that this is probably because they have to birth children.
The winner of last years transcontinental bike race was a woman, she won by over 10 hours.

Hi Mark that was an excellent video explaining how we can do more than we think if we push ourselves a little. Eg. I rode a 106km very hilly and windy event recently when i wasn't ready for it but i got through it somehow!
So I don't run consistently as I'm more of a cyclist but that kind of scenery definitely makes me want to enter a similar event. Thanks

Just a thought, Mark. Might you do a couple of videos where Jenn shares her thoughts on supporting a fat, stubborn husband on his way to better health? My wife sometimes works with me, sometimes against me. lol. You know, how your wife quelled her fears of you dying from a heart attack, telling you it was nuts running at 10 PM, not spending enough time with her? etc.

The downhills are probably harder with Nixon pulling you off balance all the time and looking at the camera instead of the trail - you're always a bit off balance and making little corrections. But, he pulls you up the uphills, so maybe it's a wash.

Did he just tell us he doesn't clean their house on a regular basis and is letting his wife alone with chores most of the time? Are men still that lazy and entitled?
You can't compare it to running as running is optional. Cleaning, cooking and managing the chores are not.

I enjoyed you video Mark, and Jen did amazingly well - I think she may be a diamond in the rough and if she trained like you you may find you can't keep up! While I agree with you that most people can push more than you think, I don't think Jen's performance can be extrapolated to the average - I know people who run 3 x 10k a week who'd look a lot more worn by the end of this than she does. And I think many people who exercise that little and attempt a race like this are likely to end up very sore and possibly with injuries.
Still, it's good to encourage people, probably most are not going to try to make this kind of jump!

    • @shea4615
      @shea4615 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have to agree with you. She's got to be in the naturally above average fitness category. I exercise more than she does and was struggling on a 17 mile hike with similar elevation gain.

Developed an Achilles issue a month ago while getting back into regular training for a hilly half marathon, couldn’t run at all for two weeks prior … super undertrained, achilles hurt or was at least a bit sore while walking even on the day of… ended up running it with
no issues, posted a decent time, had a hell of a lot of fun, and the achilles still feels fine three days later.
This one resonated with me considering my recent experience with your statement (paraphrased) of how much we can surprise ourselves if we just go for it.
