Paul Reubens was another inspired weirdo who found national attention and an artistic home on Late Night. A cult performer in Los Angeles, he developed the character Pee-wee Herman, a giddy juvenile in a suit and bow tie with the irreverent innocence of a character cut from a 1950s sit-com. Reubens had heard from an agent that Johnny Carson was “uncomfortable with the Pee-wee character,” but he proved popular with David Letterman, appearing frequently in long segments filled with silly jokes, prop humor and quips designed to throw the host off guard. “He made fun of me, but he really did seem to genuinely like me as well,” Reubens said.
-- Jason Zinoman, Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night, p. 88.
Dave: "What makes me laugh . . . is that [Pee-wee] has the external structure of a bratty little precocious kid, but you know it's being controlled by the incubus -- the manifestation of evil itself."
    -- Peter Boyer, "Pee-wee Readies Playhouse," NY Times, September 4, 1986, p. C22.
    The appearances:

I'm 53 years old, a truck driver, I used to think some of this stuff was mildly funny, now I'm sitting here nearly peeing myself and laughing until I can hardly breathe...those days and the simpler comedy were magical. This stuff can cure your ills. Makes me want to walk up to someone and just holler, "Stare contest!"

I am 68 and missed so much of this man's talent but I watched this all the way through and realize what a talent he was. His innocence and excitement is so infectious. I plan to watch his movies now and I am actually very saddened by his passing. Very strange because I am hardly familiar with him. I can only imagine how kids must feel who grew up with his show. God bless this special soul.

I’m 47 years old and Pee-Wee made my childhood a delight. I remember waking my dad up every Saturday morning to watch Pee-Wee’s playhouse unknown to me at the time he was usually hungover. Lol. Hearing of his passing made me so sad and brought back so many memories. I miss my daddy so much, I lost him to cancer in 2020. Thanks for the memories, Pee-Wee. @harleyjackson3708 When I used to go to the Cabrillo Assembly of God church on Sundays during the mid-1970s, I was trained by a Sunday school teacher who was telling me that reading MAD magazines doesn't bring me happiness. He exaggerated just by writing on the blackboard/chalkboard about the Sunday school student named Rhonda Scott. "Happy Rhonda reads the Holy Bible, Sad Sally reads MAD magazines," is what he recited. It's also hard to believe just how long Al Jaffee lived. He was best known as the artist and author who created these overleaf back cover MAD satire magazine fold-ins. He died this year in April. He was 102 years old. It's all true, you know. Al Jaffee had a conscience to know that anyone who worships E.T. is really not following Jesus.

The reason why the former child actor Mark Everett is such a big deal to me is that I first witnessed Mark Everett getting acquainted with Pee Wee Herman/Paul Reubens off the "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" set. He was 14 years old. He should've met him at a younger age. Paul Reubens could've met Mark Everett as a baby. The crime shows host: John Walsh showed me the former child actor Mark Everett when he first met Pee Wee Herman/Paul Reubens. This was right long before Mark Everett became an AMW (America's Most Wanted) fugitive and got shot/killed.

I loooove Pee Wee Herman. Who among us hasn’t had a regret or “embarrassed” ourselves … As a child of the 80’s I feel like the last generation that TRULY understand the value of the childhood experience we all shared - no caller id… couldn’t walk further than a couple feet away from the family for any phone privacy (unless your folks were brave enough to get the gratuitously long cord 😆). We watched hours of television and ….you may wanna sit down…. PLAYED OUTSIDE, riding our bikes… exploring..just hanging out- and everyone knew what the hell the phrase, “Tell ‘em LARGE MARGE sent ya” was all about. Wow. No computer of any brain damaging caliber until we were in high school and they were so slow and novel (to the general public) that we had no idea how they would …sooo very soon … change life in ways we wouldn’t or perhaps couldn’t imagine or comprehend. We used to be kind and respectful to one another for the most part…. You can’t get punched in the teeth though a computer monitor - folks will say the wildest and cruelest things without a second thought now. Doesn’t bother me- but kids lives… oh wow. We were the last of the innocent ones I think. There’s no escaping the grasp of all the evil reaching out for these poor kids on every front.
That was a downer. Not very pee wee of me. I am just trying to remind the others of my generation how fortunate we were, are.
Hug someone who needs it yall.
    Peace.

      I think you're totally wrong.
He developed the Pee Wee Herman character himself when he was in a comedy troupe with other comedians & stars like Phil Hartman & Elvira.
They all had to develop a character persona & that's what he came up with & ran with.
So EVERYTHING he did was very purposeful & thought about & deliberate.
The character took off & Paul was able to do EVERYTHING that he had planned with the persona.
I think he ABSOLUTELY realized what his character meant & was to people. The whole movie thing destroyed his life though & he never really fully recovered.

@@dcolb121 what's the real Pee Wee like?

    • @MarkingTime34
      @MarkingTime34 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@dcolb121 I'm betting it was like being in a sitcom writer's room, ...brainstorm, tease your friend, share stories from when you were 5, or 10, or 22 and your romantic partner turned out to be a jerk once the "honeymoon" was over. Silly is universal, and also one of the best ways to overcome occasionally painful or awkward events in life. Paul was very sensitive, and a unique mix of confident and anxious by many reports. When he got rolling, performance art and improv sketch comedy were also peaking, and he was in perfect position to apply high emotional and intellectual intelligence to update entertainment, from pre-cinematic clowning [note the puppets, the costuming, the bright colors], through vaudeville, manic Marx Bros. movies, early tv, and straight through to countercultural movements, Pop Art, and 21st century mash-ups in music, stage and screens. A leader and teacher, just by courageously being his odd but ultimately "left of normal" self. He learned from the greats, invented something fresh, collaborated with new greats, and thus influenced millions of growing minds, whether they wanted to be a comedian, an engineer, a lawyer or a videogame coder. His brilliance was in staying universal, vulnerable and human.

My sister and I had a tv in our room. We weren’t supposed to watch it so late, especially bc we were in junior high, so we threw our comforter over the tv and had the volume on super low.
And once his movie came out we were in high school and saw it opening night with all the other kids that loved Pee Wee’s creative ADHD style comedy!!!
