We traveled on this single line track in the early seventies to Wellington from Gisborne. We had a Māori choir on the train with us such beautiful music. Happy days. Like so many things gone but not forgotten. Many thanks for your patience making this video.
They seriously need this line reopen for Kiwirail trains as transporting freight by rail to and from Gisborne is way more economical than transporting it by road. The roads is a tough challenge and if this problem continues then the challenges will get a whole lot more harder and tougher. About $5 million (may have been extended over the years) has been put on the table to get this line fixed. I've read that this line is most likely gonna reopen for trains to transport logs, fruit, vegetables and meat from Gisborne down to Napier. Also if it does reopen, Gisborne city vintage railway may run their trains out to Beach loop and back. But that would be for weekends only. If they do succeed in getting this line reopen for Kiwirail trains then it would make it a whole lot more easier for the East Cape logging industry and the residential farmers that grow the fruits and vegetables in transporting their products/logs down to the Port of Napier. So yeah hopefully in the future this line is back in use.
It would nice to have trains going to Gisborne for freight, passenger as it can be an isolated place for people who live in gisborne if we have floods like we had this year 2022. If the roads are closed due to flooding the only other way to gisborne is to fly
I understand the political and road safety imperative which drives the pressure to reopen this line to Wairoa and the dream of once more taking trains thru to Gisborne, probably at near NZ 15 million dollar cost just to open. Its an immensely expensive line and has historicially been frequently washed out in many places recently in 2012 and 1985 stopping services for years. My own view is beyond reopening short sections required for port access with good prospects like Whanganui - the real priority for reopening on NZR is the Stratford- Taurmaranui line to complete the NI network and because the NIMT through the Raimauri spiral is a limited vulnerable roure which even when electrified could not cope with the demands of any real tonnage moving my rail even the Wisconsin / Fay Richwhite railway had to operate both the NIMT route through Waiouru and the Stratford line to even attempt to maintain full competitive NI Auclandl Wellington freight volume . The Gisborne line in contrast will cost fifty times the traffic volume available for rail. NB these short trains and the slow poor condition track route
Awesome marty, certainly history taken in your own style. Just out of curiosity, how long ago did you capture those shots? didnt get to see the massive trains they were running at the end?

Well done - at least you got a good coverage just in time. That Mohaka viaduct is a mighty thing.

Fantasastic photography of a beautiful place. Would probably be very expensive for a tourist line to operate.
Awesome Marty
Well shot, great job..

Gisborne to the Ahuriri Branch has been closed and the line has been mothballed as of October 2012
Great video. Even more reason that the line should never be reopened unless all of us are prepared to use it.
Great video mate!!
Is anyone watching this after KiwiRail reopened the Napier - Wairoa section?
Me
@@kiwirailtrains8651 Lol they haven't run any trains up there since before Covid19
With all that high rise steel work to maintain, I would suggest a washout was a present from the gods. Great presentation as always.
A couple of those shots I've seen on NZ Railscene
I enjoy that,Well done.
EXCELLENT !!!!!!
What did the guy say at 14:15? And amazing how you chased the train :)
Isnt the line from Wairoa to gissy broken in places? - how did this train get here from Napier?
10:08 He blocks his ears just in time
I think he was told by the driver that he was about to toot the horn.
Is this down unda?
Hey mate. Yes is on the East Coast of the North Island in New Zealand.
