The sound is compliments of General Electric (J-79) engines. I was an engine mechanic on the F-4 back in the Vietnam war days. It is one of the neatest sounding engines you ever heard...........especially on approach to landing. It had this strange howl that was so neat to hear. Part of this was they tapped a lot of air off the engine and ducted it over the wings for what they called BLC (boundary layer control) It just fooled the airplane into thinking it was flying faster than it was.
I didn't work on the F-105 "THUD" except on rare occasions. I did help a crew change an engine one time because I was idle and I wanted to see how it was done. While I was in the Air Force, I carried a "J" prefix before my AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code) that prevented me from moving to another airplane type as long as I was in. Once you got the prefix, you were stuck on F-4's for a long, long time. Which wasn't bad at all considering it was the best thing we had in the inventory at that time.
No Smoke J-79's? I once watched video where an Air Force Officer lambasted the Phantom. Horrible Aerodynamics, he bemoaned. Dihedral/ Anhedral etc. Well now, this pig did Mach 2.62 in 1961. It would have gone faster, but it hit the thermal warning.
