    Try Heart of a Tiger by Herschel Cobb. Just think what his batting average would be with the tighter baseball we have today

    My father used to say Cobb was so hated by fellow ballplayers that at his funeral only two men showed up. The truth is when I die if my wife is still alive there will only be one person there; if she has passed before me someone I designated and hired to make sure I was cremated and buried will be the only person, a stranger, at my funeral. So it goes to show.

    Al Stump ruined this mans legacy

    • @BravesOnDeck
      @BravesOnDeck  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a shame really. Take out the fact that it's a cruel thing to do, it also muddied the waters of baseball history. Even Ken Burns has come out and said he was inaccurate in his depiction of Cobb in his Baseball documentary. Stump missed an opportunity to document Cobb in the right way, and be remembered for it today.

    • @HappyRoach1
      @HappyRoach1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to believe a lot of the stuff from the 1994 Cobb movie, based on Al Stump's book. However, I always so impressed with Cobb's record and some of the crazy stories of Cobb, that I had to do my own research. The research showed a lot of stories were either lies or exaggerations or taken out of context. Now, I believe Al Stump's legacy as a sportswriter is going to be ruined. BTW, I'm black, its nice to know that Cobb supported the integration of baseball and did have respect for some of the Negro League players.

      @@BravesOnDeck I’m so glad you mentioned this. I am new to the non-myth accuracy about Ty Cobb and who he really was, and have been looking into it more. I was recently watching the Ken Burns documentary, and I was stunned by how malevolent they described Cobb - using words like “evil” and phrases like the “darkest” blight of baseball history. Burns is such a well-respected documentarian, I was stunned that he didn’t dig deeper on Cobb, and I was going to look into whether he had reconciled this, since he filmed it almost 20 years ago. Long story short, I’m happy to know that he addressed this, thank you! And thank you for the video!!

      @@3rdandzen97 thank you for watching. I believe even Ken Burns has backtracked a bit when it comes to Cobb. I choose to believe he was misunderstood, but overall a decent person…but a heck of a player.

      Pete Rose is up there too! I completely agree, arguably the greatest one to lace a pair of cleats. It is a shame that his name has been slandered. We really don't know what he was like, which may be the true tragedy of the situation. History is blurred, but I tend to think he leans more toward the human side of things than the myth.

      By all the 'metrics', meaning things that help score runs, Ruth beats Cobb. His OPS, OPS+, RBI per PA, even when he was still pitching, generally beat Cobb.
