As a Dane i have to say that pallitoy’s action man was a great toy, i got my last one in 1980. Actually number 11 since 1975. It was outstanding with all the types of uniforms, by the way extremely close to the original ones, the equipment etc. He he I’m more than 50 now and I still remember this wonderful feeling it brought to me playing, getting a new AM, and hopefully get new uniforms and equipment for them. I think it’s on its place for a big THX. to pallitoy for playing a big wonderful role in mine childhood and also a big THX. for these videos that bring the memories back. I joined the Army and became an officer, could that maybe have something to do with the wonderful world of Pallitoy🤔 I guess they played a role there to❤😂
No matter how many action men you get you can't replace the one you had as a kid. 60s 70s action man were built to last and they were the best. Pallitoy made action man. Modern ones they shouldn't be allowed to be called action man.
I loved this 3 part documentary! Beautiful! As a 70’s kid from America I really connected with this based on my G. I. Joe experiences. It was fascinating and personally very moving to see this great document of the British counterpart. I believe toys like this built better men of boys.

What a great set of films. Made me so nostalgic. I loved my little GI Joe plastic figures, but there was always so much more enjoyment with the big Action Man toys in their fabric clothing. We'd make trench systems & mudpits, & they'd get really dirty, the wet clothing, caked in mud, sticking to the figures, and as I fell asleep, it was to the warm smell of Action Man clothing drying on the radiator (or on the top of my metal bedside light!) All the Action Man toys I had were from school fairs or jumble sales or carboot sales, so they were a real hodgepodge of different eras, in different levels of condition (one was particularly floppy, so he was always a casualty that had to be evacuated from action). Uniforms were total mash-ups, and there were never enough guns, so more often than not, my team of Action Men were escaping from the jaws of defeat from an unseen enemy, just trying to get back to friendly lines... I was just about young enough to buy some of the new American made Action Man toys from 93, and was so excited that there were new sets, but, new Action Man didn't have any soul. He was too modelled, and slick, and didn't move or pose like the Action Man I'd grown to love. The new figures became the baddies, and the old figures remained the goodies... Until my new puppy was left alone one afternoon and ate all the heads off the "real hair" figures. I was upset, to say the least. In the early 2000s, I bought a lot of the WW2, and Iraq War figures made by Dragon, and they're great. But they're way too fragile to be used as toys - they'd not last in the trenches or mudpits... Palitoy really did have an incredible toy in the Action Man series, as, although there were small & complicated parts, there was still a rugged durability that they could sustain heavy play - so many hundreds of times my toys descended on zip-lines from a 3rd-floor window into the garden, spent the night in the rain, were buried in sand, swam the bathtub, bashed around & brutalised, and they sustained every assault (until a teething puppy found them). And the fact that they weren't tied to a franchise of movies or comics made them so versatile to any story or scenario we wanted. They could fight the Germans one day, the Iraqis the next, and then the next day, they could fight zombies or aliens or whatever. I have an older sister who played with Barbie dolls, with her big Barbie house & furniture, & if she wasn't around, my Action Men could commandeer the house like Colonel Frost in "A Bridge Too Far", or if she was there, I'd still commandeer the house but with the orders of "protect the civilians". The scale & fabrics of Action Man & Barbie seemed to work - we just wouldn't have played together like that if I'd just had Real Ghostbusters figures, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... (My little GI Joe men did have a lot of fun protecting Sylvanian Family villages when I visited my friend in Hammersmith, however...) But no toy has ever held the same magic to me as my Action Man toys. They were brilliant. And I still look online for 1/6th figures to see what's being made (there's some awesome figures out there, but they're not toys), and dreaming of long summers in the garden with my brother & friends, with Action Men in the trenches, in the mudpits, climbing the rockery, zip-lining into action, or inside mountaineering on the stairs, defending the Barbie House, or repelling attacks from cardboard fortresses... Thank you Palitoy, and thank you Analog for bringing back some memories (and making me wish I'd had some of the accessory packs that you've highlighted in these films.
Such a wonderful legacy! Thank you for producing this documentary, Tony, and to all those at Palitoy. I was given my first figure in about 1975 (although we knew them as G.I. Joe in sunny Tasmania) and it opened up a world of fun and imagination for me. I owned a few over the years, but not terribly many, and always wanted the deep sea diver suit - an unrealised dream. I never knew there were so many variants, or that Action Man made it into space! The heyday of Action Man were halcyon days, and I am happy to be reminded of him.
Outstanding documentry on Action Man. It's cool to see how Action Man started out as essentially G.I.Joe for the U.K. but evolved into a name all itself. I also enjoyed the brief history of Palitoy and how much the rise and fall of Action Man did the same with the company, showing just how essential the brand was for them. Keep up the good work!!!
Absolutely brilliant film. My brother and I had several Action Men, and played with them almost every day. Whether it was escaping the Nazis, operating behind enemy lines, or the SAS storming my sister's Sindy house, to rescue the hostages, he gave us hours of fun. There's rarely been a toy as much fun as Action Man, and I hope he's returned to active service soon. I really enjoyed this trip down memory lane - and the sheet amount of detail and love for Action Man is evident. Wonderful stuff.
@@CrusaderSports250 What usually happened, is that Ken was the leader of some terrorist cell, who'd taken control of some mansion. Probably belonging to an ambassador (Who Dares Wins was a big influence on me). Ken was usually Anthony Perkins from North Sea Hijack (another big influence), and aided by muscle in the firm of a cheap Action Man knock-off, and a 12" Mr T in his US Marine uniform. Often aided by Barbie (naturally) who often packed a pistol in her purse. It might even have been the gold one from the Cluedo box.
Action Man is undeniably one of the greatest toys of all time. I remember for Christmas getting an action Man who had scooba gear and you could press a button on his back to simulate his oxygen tank. I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw. Then my dad and i talked for over an hour about him receiving an original palitoy action man When he was a kid and it blew my mind knowing this toy had endured for so many years. I don't own an action man now (accept for a collection of smaller figures I'd collected from McDonald's and I adore those toys) but I often look out for them.

I'll put extra care to the 1968 original GI Joe soldier I got from my dad. It survived the awesome treatment of my child games, almost unsacathed, and now enjoys a honour place as a veteran.
I had three Action Men in my childhood, one no-pants Action Man who fell apart after too many underwater adventures, and two blue-pants models who were originally a blue rubber-suited Space Ranger and an SAS Talking Commander, although, of course, they ended up having many careers throughout their life. I might be late to the party, but thanks for the nostalgia trip.

Thank you for making this documentary film my son and I watched the whole, though not in one sitting, and really enjoyed it. My 10-year-old has had a 1990s Action Man for 3 years now and still plays with him alongside his transformers and bionicles. I've even had to make custom clothing for AM, at my son's request based on Vintage AM pics he found online. Massive Thank You again.
What a superb series thanks for that. It relived my adventures with my action man. I was lucky enough to have a lot of those golden era action men and vehicles but that training tower was amazing. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I'm 57 and have around 500+ Acrion Men I do the occasional Dioramas for public display ... and spend most of my spare cash on collecting ( yes its an obsession but a harmless one ) and I'm sure there are 1000's of me out there 😀 👍🏻
Just watched this episode for the 5th or 6th time, its simply the best toy documentary on TH-cam! I was actually in hospital recovering from a heart transplant when this was uploaded and i remember really looking forward to this episode after watching part 1 & 2 as it was my era of Action Man! As a child born in 78 i missed out on getting new Action Man products, i only ever had 1 brand new Action man and he unfortunately met his demise far sooner than you could ever predict, thats a story i'll eventually tell in a video! I originally fell in love with Action man after my uncle gave me 1 of my older cousins flock headed painted eye figures that layed in a sandpit in his garden, blonde with no hands just the pegs, but i thought he was awesome, unfortunately he also met his maker pretty soon after acquiring him, sitting in a sandpit, you can probably guess what happened to him!
I grew up with the Action Man of the 90s. I dont think there was a christmas/birthday (Theyre the same day lol) that didnt feature a couple of action men! Awesome documentary, its awesome to see where a part of my childhood came from!
Thank you for this. There was no other toy that marked my childhood like Action Man! If memory serves me right I had a German half-track and a scout car..... I had the tank officer and the set with the wooly hat in the background. I also had a tape with a story. I wish that I held onto these wonderful toys.
Can I ask, was the German African core half-track and scout car part of the Action Man line, or was it made by another company. I also had a German motorcycle and side car that was in a darker green/grey colour....
I'm 56 I just got my first vintage actionman! I have 2 from the 90s but I just got my first vintage actionman it's with my gi joe collection I also have a few Geyperman, I want to get some Falcón Estrella from Brasil and a few Aventureros de acción from Mexico, gi joe was big part of my childhood so we're the shogun warriors and yes I had star wars but I had more fun with gi joe since I can use my imagination and create my own adventures, now my grandson plays with all my joes and my shogun warriors, Nothing like Gi Joe , Actionman, Geyperman, Falcón or Aventureros de Accion!! Just got an actioman truck and customized it now to start working on the jeep.
Came up a few years ago and then just randomly thought about it recently, growing up in the 90s I loved my action man even though a lot say that one was not the true action man but I still loved it, unfortunately think he was chucked a long time ago and am gutted. love to try and collect them again. Great documentary interesting learning the history of a toy I loved and hope start my own collection soon off the old and my own era to share with my son
This is so enjoyable to watch. I just watched the entire thing for the second time. I'm a Canadian and grew up on the GI Joe Adventure Team. I first saw Action Man when I was 25/26 years old. I managed to get 3 figures but as yet have not managed to get any uniforms. The Parachute Regiment figure is my number 1 set I want to get for one of my figures. It's very interesting to see the variations of the Hasbro sets. AM Atomic Man is quite different than the Atomic Man I had as a youngster and is just awesome to see. Thanks for doing this Tony. I'm a bit envious that I never had the chance to play with Action Man as a youngster but watching this dicumentary is very satisfying. Cheers and Nerdmaste from Canada!

Amazing documentary, when i was 8 years old my family went for a vacation in a familiy friend 17th century farm house, those vacations where a big adventure for me but at night alone i was afraid to sleep, investigating the room i was in, i saw this plastic naked man it was mutilated but i had never seen a toy that could move so much like a human. i told my father i found it, my father was amazed and told me: thats an ACTION MAN a toy from the 70s. in that day the doll disapeard...for around 3 years i woundered super markets and toy shops looking for a similar toy, but they where all pittiful compared to that murilated guy i found lost in this wood box that disapeard on the next day. the day i saw the first action man in the supermarket it was 1995 it was a wich coming true the model was called in portugal basic elit corp, the first 3 or 4 where still militar toys, and 2 diferent space travelers although they had less articulations they were still amazing, only after, closer to the 2000s it became the strange animation base toy. to me it lost the charm. Now a days im doing a sci fi series with my daughter, with my childhood survivors and her barbies.

Greetings I’m 58 and grew up playing with G.I. Joe. I had the deep sea diver and the frog man. I don’t believe they ever left the pool and we’re held together with there suites. I still have one original joe left and he sits proudly on my desk waiting patiently for me to pick him up and go on an adventure.

I am very proud of my collection of American GI Joe's and have just begun reviewing some of my collection on You Tube. Thanks for this great and historical video. Brilliant overall. The one (obscure) point I picked up on was when the man mentioned that Strawberry Shortcake was made in the same factory as the SAS Action Man figures.... That may explain my Star Wars TIE Fighter pilot as I was always sure he had a sort of sweet smell around him!

Very well done. This taught me a lot about Action Man since I was a GI Joe lad, myself. I do have a number of the 40th and 50th Anniversary Action Man sets, especially the Ceremonial uniforms which are top notch sets. Too bad that Hasbro quit the GI Joe production and that Palitoy went out of business. A real shame, it is. I'd still be buying GI Joe and Action Man sets if they were in production today.
This was a great three part documentary. So much heart and soul put into developing this outstanding and versatile toy, only for it to come to an emotional end. Who knows what else could've evolved in the Action Man range, had the figure continued.
Amazing documentary. Thank you for this insight into Action Man. I did not know the history despite growing up at the time he was in stores (though I was in Canada and Action Man was overseas). Had I been able to get my hands on these toys as a kid I would have been a fanatic. You are so correct in what you said about toys today needing a tie-in to movies or comics. Action Man didn't need that. Kids got to create their own world and that is one thing that is so very lacking in kids anymore. The imagination comes from a video game screen and what another person programs for them to interact with. Action Man had limitless potential and I hope we haven't seen the last of him.

The Space Ranger was my last Action Man (I had 3, the others being and old talking one and an Eagle Eyes). Actually we did end up with one more many years later when I bought one for my own son in the early noughties when Hasbro brought out the new action hero style Action Man with a Kayak as part of the adventure line you talked about.. he loved it. We got him that and the enemy "Doctor X" and he had a lot of fun (but it was very much a different thing by then). Marvelous documentary.
Late sixties for me, had the astronaut and Gemini capsule, and Arctic exploration set complete with sledge and three huskies, and even the deep sea diver set the diving suit was a rubberized cloth which eventually broke up with age, my first sets were very heavily American military, I much preferred the later, (very late sixties early seventies), non military specific stuff, and probably will have some of the bits stored away somewhere "safe", loved the memory trip and the history of things post " my time".

It's hard to imagine a better, more scholarly, respectful, or sincerely affectionate tribute to the 12 inch tall hero who starred in the imaginative adventures of millions of children. The insights from the Palitoy team who helped bring him into the friendly local toy store for eighteen years are delightful and enlightening. It's also a treat to hear from the many devoted admirers and collectors. The dedication at the close to Bill Pugh is a touching and fitting last word. Thank you for the time and dedicated effort you put in to making the three part documentary all that it is. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and for a brief and shining moment being taken back to simpler, carefree days. Beautifully done.

Absolutely brilliant film. My brother and I had several Action Men, and played with them almost every day. Whether it was escaping the Nazis, operating behind enemy lines, or the SAS storming my sister's Sindy house, to rescue the hostages, he gave us hours of fun. There's rarely been a toy as much fun as Action Man, and I hope he's returned to active service soon.
I really enjoyed this trip down memory lane - and the sheet amount of detail and love for Action Man is evident. Wonderful stuff.

@@CrusaderSports250 What usually happened, is that Ken was the leader of some terrorist cell, who'd taken control of some mansion. Probably belonging to an ambassador (Who Dares Wins was a big influence on me). Ken was usually Anthony Perkins from North Sea Hijack (another big influence), and aided by muscle in the firm of a cheap Action Man knock-off, and a 12" Mr T in his US Marine uniform. Often aided by Barbie (naturally) who often packed a pistol in her purse. It might even have been the gold one from the Cluedo box.

Action Man is undeniably one of the greatest toys of all time. I remember for Christmas getting an action Man who had scooba gear and you could press a button on his back to simulate his oxygen tank. I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw. Then my dad and i talked for over an hour about him receiving an original palitoy action man
When he was a kid and it blew my mind knowing this toy had endured for so many years. I don't own an action man now (accept for a collection of smaller figures I'd collected from McDonald's and I adore those toys) but I often look out for them.

Thank You i have spent a splendid evening watching your three videos and traveling back down memory lane to 1975 when i received my Action Man for my 10th birthday, I had quite a bit of equipment Scorpion tank Deep see diver kit, special mission pod etc. I even made him a HQ from an old tv cabinet.

I had three Action Men in my childhood, one no-pants Action Man who fell apart after too many underwater adventures, and two blue-pants models who were originally a blue rubber-suited Space Ranger and an SAS Talking Commander, although, of course, they ended up having many careers throughout their life.

My 10-year-old has had a 1990s Action Man for 3 years now and still plays with him alongside his transformers and bionicles. I've even had to make custom clothing for AM, at my son's request based on Vintage AM pics he found online. Massive Thank You again.

What a superb series thanks for that. It relived my adventures with my action man. I was lucky enough to have a lot of those golden era action men and vehicles but that training tower was amazing. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I'm 57 and have around 500+ Acrion Men I do the occasional Dioramas for public display ... and spend most of my spare cash on collecting ( yes its an obsession but a harmless one ) and I'm sure there are 1000's of me out there 😀 👍🏻

Just watched this episode for the 5th or 6th time, its simply the best toy documentary on TH-cam! I was actually in hospital recovering from a heart transplant when this was uploaded and i remember really looking forward to this episode after watching part 1 & 2 as it was my era of Action Man! As a child born in 78 i missed out on getting new Action Man products, i only ever had 1 brand new Action man and he unfortunately met his demise far sooner than you could ever predict, thats a story i'll eventually tell in a video! I originally fell in love with Action man after my uncle gave me 1 of my older cousins flock headed painted eye figures that layed in a sandpit in his garden, blonde with no hands just the pegs, but i thought he was awesome, unfortunately he also met his maker pretty soon after acquiring him, sitting in a sandpit, you can probably guess what happened to him!

I grew up with the Action Man of the 90s. I dont think there was a christmas/birthday (Theyre the same day lol) that didnt feature a couple of action men! Awesome documentary, its awesome to see where a part of my childhood came from!

Thank you for this. There was no other toy that marked my childhood like Action Man! If memory serves me right I had a German half-track and a scout car..... I had the tank officer and the set with the wooly hat in the background. I also had a tape with a story. I wish that I held onto these wonderful toys.
Can I ask, was the German African core half-track and scout car part of the Action Man line, or was it made by another company. I also had a German motorcycle and side car that was in a darker green/grey colour....

I'm 56 I just got my first vintage actionman! I have 2 from the 90s but I just got my first vintage actionman it's with my gi joe collection I also have a few Geyperman, I want to get some Falcón Estrella from Brasil and a few Aventureros de acción from Mexico, gi joe was big part of my childhood so we're the shogun warriors and yes I had star wars but I had more fun with gi joe since I can use my imagination and create my own adventures, now my grandson plays with all my joes and my shogun warriors,
Nothing like Gi Joe , Actionman, Geyperman, Falcón or Aventureros de Accion!!
Just got an actioman truck and customized it now to start working on the jeep.
Came up a few years ago and then just randomly thought about it recently, growing up in the 90s I loved my action man even though a lot say that one was not the true action man but I still loved it, unfortunately think he was chucked a long time ago and am gutted. love to try and collect them again. Great documentary interesting learning the history of a toy I loved and hope start my own collection soon off the old and my own era to share with my son

This is so enjoyable to watch. I just watched the entire thing for the second time. I'm a Canadian and grew up on the GI Joe Adventure Team. I first saw Action Man when I was 25/26 years old. I managed to get 3 figures but as yet have not managed to get any uniforms. The Parachute Regiment figure is my number 1 set I want to get for one of my figures. It's very interesting to see the variations of the Hasbro sets. AM Atomic Man is quite different than the Atomic Man I had as a youngster and is just awesome to see. Thanks for doing this Tony. I'm a bit envious that I never had the chance to play with Action Man as a youngster but watching this dicumentary is very satisfying. Cheers and Nerdmaste from Canada!

Amazing documentary, when i was 8 years old my family went for a vacation in a familiy friend 17th century farm house, those vacations where a big adventure for me but at night alone i was afraid to sleep, investigating the room i was in, i saw this plastic naked man it was mutilated but i had never seen a toy that could move so much like a human. i told my father i found it, my father was amazed and told me: thats an ACTION MAN a toy from the 70s. in that day the doll disapeard...for around 3 years i woundered super markets and toy shops looking for a similar toy, but they where all pittiful compared to that murilated guy i found lost in this wood box that disapeard on the next day. the day i saw the first action man in the supermarket it was 1995 it was a wich coming true the model was called in portugal basic elit corp, the first 3 or 4 where still militar toys, and 2 diferent space travelers although they had less articulations they were still amazing, only after, closer to the 2000s it became the strange animation base toy. to me it lost the charm. Now a days im doing a sci fi series with my daughter, with my childhood survivors and her barbies.

Greetings I’m 58 and grew up playing with G.I. Joe. I had the deep sea diver and the frog man. I don’t believe they ever left the pool and we’re held together with there suites. I still have one original joe left and he sits proudly on my desk waiting patiently for me to pick him up and go on an adventure.

Absolutely brilliant documentary! I collect GI Joe , being from the states and had no idea how large the Action Man line was..and it lasted longer than the vintage GI Joe 12 inch line. I am very proud of my collection of American GI Joe's and have just begun reviewing some of my collection on You Tube. Thanks for this great and historical video. By far the greatest toys of all time. I'm still collecting..don't think I'll ever stop anytime soon. Have a great day!
Brilliant overall. The one (obscure) point I picked up on was when the man mentioned that Strawberry Shortcake was made in the same factory as the SAS Action Man figures.... That may explain my Star Wars TIE Fighter pilot as I was always sure he had a sort of sweet smell around him!

I had no idea of Action Man having so much history behind it. Thank you for the documentary. I cant even imagine how much work got into making of this documentary. Thank you again.
Very well done. This taught me a lot about Action Man since I was a GI Joe lad, myself. I do have a number of the 40th and 50th Anniversary Action Man sets, especially the Ceremonial uniforms which are top notch sets. Too bad that Hasbro quit the GI Joe production and that Palitoy went out of business. A real shame, it is. I'd still be buying GI Joe and Action Man sets if they were in production today.
Likewise, I still believe that kids of today would Action Man as well!
This was a great three part documentary. So much heart and soul put into developing this outstanding and versatile toy, only for it to come to an emotional end. Who knows what else could've evolved in the Action Man range, had the figure continued.
Amazing documentary. Thank you for this insight into Action Man. I did not know the history despite growing up at the time he was in stores (though I was in Canada and Action Man was overseas). Had I been able to get my hands on these toys as a kid I would have been a fanatic. You are so correct in what you said about toys today needing a tie-in to movies or comics. Action Man didn't need that. Kids got to create their own world and that is one thing that is so very lacking in kids anymore. The imagination comes from a video game screen and what another person programs for them to interact with. Action Man had limitless potential and I hope we haven't seen the last of him.

The Space Ranger was my last Action Man (I had 3, the others being and old talking one and an Eagle Eyes). Actually we did end up with one more many years later when I bought one for my own son in the early noughties when Hasbro brought out the new action hero style Action Man with a Kayak as part of the adventure line you talked about.. he loved it. We got him that and the enemy "Doctor X" and he had a lot of fun (but it was very much a different thing by then).

Incredible documentary!
Late sixties for me, had the astronaut and Gemini capsule, and Arctic exploration set complete with sledge and three huskies, and even the deep sea diver set the diving suit was a rubberized cloth which eventually broke up with age, my first sets were very heavily American military, I much preferred the later, (very late sixties early seventies), non military specific stuff, and probably will have some of the bits stored away somewhere "safe", loved the memory trip and the history of things post " my time".

It's hard to imagine a better, more scholarly, respectful, or sincerely affectionate tribute to the 12 inch tall hero who starred in the imaginative adventures of millions of children. The insights from the Palitoy team who helped bring him into the friendly local toy store for eighteen years are delightful and enlightening. It's also a treat to hear from the many devoted admirers and collectors. The dedication at the close to Bill Pugh is a touching and fitting last word. Thank you for the time and dedicated effort you put in to making the three part documentary all that it is. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and for a brief and shining moment being taken back to simpler, carefree days. Beautifully done.
