Apologies for the late reply... Helen passed away many years ago so a personal response is not possible. I'm sure she would have deeply appreciated your kind post. I hope you're enjoying the other lessons... more to come.
Very good lesson. I mostly learned from the fantastic commentary she uses during the lesson. Her explanations are clear and insightful, providing me deeper understanding of the techniques. I think it's a difficult thing to lecture and paint at the same time, but wow, Helen always does it with ease. Her ability to seamlessly blend instruction with demonstration is truly impressive. She makes complex concepts accessible and inspires confidence. Overall, an exceptional teacher who elevates the learning experience.
Its great to hear you appreciate Helen's teaching style, especially her remarks while painting. Thank you for sharing, and your continued support is appreciated.
@Toqueville2023 - Well, in this particular lesson, she doesn't say. She's told that story before during other lessons, and if there's a definitive answer, this post will be updated.
Yes, she does...Painting a truly lifelike apple isn't just about accuracy-it's a deep dive into the nuances of technique and observation. It teaches valuable lessons that go beyond mere replication
I can’t get over how thick her paint is when she’s applying it. But the finished painting looks so smooth. I am so use to painting with acrylics and never tried oil.
Thanks for your comment. If you decide to try oil painting, you might enjoy the different experience it offers compared to acrylics, although there are concerns such as odor, slow drying time, toxicity, cleaning ...etc.
Sad to say, but Helen passed away in 1994, so a direct response from her isn’t possible. While she featured flowers in many of her lessons, there’s only one that specifically focuses on roses. I’ll make sure that lesson gets remastered and posted soon. Thanks for posting and supporting the channel.
@craft-o-matic399 Helen's work truly does captures her energy. While getting an original painting might be tough, you can still enjoy her art through her video lessons, they'll bring a part of Helen into your home.
I had to do a little research about the 5 bumps on a red delicious apple being due to the flower. Results (from ChatGpt): The presence of the five bumps on a red delicious apple is indeed connected to the original five-petaled structure of the apple flower, reflecting the inherent symmetry and segmentation that starts in the flower and continues through to the mature fruit.
Just amazing. I never learned how to paint realistically and a lot of us painters dont even know how to do this and we went to art school. Paintings that sell today usually are not realistic and you look at Francis Bacon or Gerard Richter or Marlene Dumas and you are left thinking. Will I learn realism or will I do my own thing. Even if we learned this realism we have to consider who would buy them As the Chinese are flooding the market even in France with master copies. Yes what to do in art????
It's a difficult road to navigate, indeed. Wrestling with the complexities of artistic identity, market demands, and practical challenges is something many likely face. I'll pin your comment to the top for a while to encourage others to provide some insightful perspectives and points of view. Stay positive.
But isn't that the beauty of watching Helen's lessons...to learn the process and improve our technique. I'm 100% certain that with persistence, practice, and a willingness to make mistakes, you'll get to that 5-stroke apple. Thanks for posting. It is appreciated.
It never crossed my mind that you were being rude. The time you and others take to watch Helen's lessons and post comments is always appreciated and welcomed.
Sadly, Helen died in 1994. She was a fantastic artist/teacher. The video quality is not up to current standards but her teachings remain as current as ever. Thanks for the support and please enjoy these remastered archived lessons from Helen. She really enjoyed teaching oil painting to her students.
Brillant! You're the apple of my eye, Helen. Wonderful, structured lesson...

curious though, Was Helen able to pick the apples out of the bag after painting them?

Helen’s handling of the brush- is like no other-
It is her signature brushstrokes and ability to see and mix colors that makes her works stand out-
It is amazing to watch as she moves that brush in such an effortless manner and witness the spot-on results.
Excellent instruction ‼️🍎 I have her books.📚
Agree. Helen lessons are very educational and her books are a great complement to her lessons.

Helen creates an apple in 5 strokes. It takes me one hour to paint a good apple. 😅
