  • (6-13-19) I took a ride on the recently built Milwaukee Streetcar to get downtown. For a new streetcar system, this is very nice! It is still free to ride and makes it easy to travel around downtown.

Glad to see it's well utilized! It's neat to see the use of battery backup power versus always running under the overhead catenary.

    It sounds epic!
It looks like an interesting route downtown to be honest!

The streetcars are very unique in that they can operate off wire with battery power for an extended period and the batteries get recharged when going back under the wires.

Back in the early 80s I lived in the apartment building at mm 5:28 Still looks the same. Haha! Had to walk all the way to 3rd & Wisconsin for work every day. Wish this was around back then, it would have been sweet! Nice video, thanks for posting.

Nice video! Didn't know that Milwaukee has streetcars that offer free rides. Also, I liked how you interrupted the voice of the announcement before it completed that sentence at 8:23. 😂

B.K. Ridge freeways are a boondoggle. This starter tram system has been doing very well. Don’t be a brainwashed sheep.

Cheaper and more cost effective to buy everyone in Milwaukee a Lexus.

You guys need to expand the streetcar. In order to get a mode of transportation to be profitable you need to get it to places where people go. The line you guys have now is a starter line. You need to agree with the people and accept risks. It doesn't work because it doesn't go to it's intended destination. Sure it won't be a immediate success but that's where promoting it comes in.

The idea is it's the beginning of the line. They are talking about expanding it into the neighborhoods further. Already working on expanding it to Summer Fest and the art Museum. Get an extension to Fiserv Forum and American Family Field. It can work.
Lite rail works in San Diego. The Trolley system has about 60 miles of tracks on 3 lines. Expanding to about 75 by later this year. You can get around a lot of the south, east and central city with it. You just have to see a system that makes sense. They charge $2.50 1 way pass. $5.00 both ways. $6.00 all day pass as many rides as you want.
      1) They need to expand to some high traffic areas where it would make sense. 2) The lines need to be expanded. 3.1 miles is not going to do. 3) You need to charge for the rides. Everybody talks about it's losing money. LOL. They are literally giving it away for free. Charge a user fee like other cities do and develop some useful routes that people will use it. 4) Build some downtown office concentration areas too. So people could use some park and ride lots and ride in and out. If you extend the lines to areas that are useful.

Agreed. Any municipality which chooses to waste taxpayer money for an LRT which only serves the more affluent neighborhoods and is vulnerable to traffic; especially Uber and Lyft drivers, taxicab and emergency vehicles because it is neither elevated, uses it's own right-of-way, nor is in a subway, is a city which is clearly giving the middle finger to the impoverished or anyone else who isn't privileged and wealthy and who can afford to like let alone ride their "tourist attraction."
In this country, the Twin Cities LRT is still the best in my mind, and BOTH Detroit and Milwaukee's LRTs are no better than riding a bus and show just how greedy their politicians truly are.

    • @mattlberry

@@briancolombo7597 if you charge for rides nobody will ride it. The only reason people ride it now is because it's free. Going around circles in downtown is nothing but a carnival ride. The reason why they got rid of the streetcars in the forties and fifties is because it didn't work people rather ride the bus you can change a buses route at any time but once you lay hard track you cannot change the route and the expansion they're talkin about cost $10,000 a foot to run new electrical lines and rail. I'm sure in some cities it does work but Milwaukee is not one of them
