    I like how you see the amp sim part of the chain as just a pedal, in your case the jackhammer. Thats a great way to think of the chain when setting up these type of units. great vid dude

    Great review Dave, I'll be getting one of these in a few days, and your comments about the sound quality are relieving, despite the plastic issue :D
    Anyway, I think it will be a great advance compared to my current Zoom G1xON (also plastic but pretty tough) Thanks!

    Actually. I believe I could watch your tutorials all day long if I was allowed to Sir David. I sometimes actually Thank the Lord for the interwebs since I can joyfullly watch your lovely tutorials over and over again. "Back in the Day" before YT you couldn't even hardly find anyone as knowledgeable to even Pay them to explain things like this so well. Merry Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, in advance and Thanks for all of your very much appreciated efforts.

    • @aharkness5657
      @aharkness5657 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Step on metal, get a dent or scratch. Step on plastic, get a bit of flex. To get a metal surface to take any wear, you actually coat it in plastic (paint). It can be done well or badly of course and the structure is more important than the material for durablity. Most power tools are plastic and take a lot of beating.

    +1 on the built-in tuners. I have a Zoom B3, G3X and G3n and the tuner in each unit is just fab.
    They all sound great if you know how to set the patches up. The G3n sounds the best and can be had for little money secondhand and Zoom are still providing updates for it.

    • @mihnea358
      @mihnea358 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes it sounds great, but it lacks versatility because of the limitations when it comes to simultaneous effects and I have never could really achieve more complex sounds, but otherwise it is great

    Had mine for about 5 weeks and I am still tweaking out some custom patches but my primary sounds are completed and honestly it gives me 98% of the same tones my tube amp and over sized pedal board does. Takes some time to get it tweaked out but it is surprising how good it sounds.

    You look much happier with the longer vids Dave.👍 Always liked the zoom gear, sound is everything and zoom is good at it. I think it will last but there is something tank like about a metal enclosure that gives you confidence. A simple USB upgrade path is something zoom should look at to keep their customers loyal to the brand to fix any usability quirks. Basically build a great metal pedal that can have the interface upgraded rather than a pedal redesign all the time. Thanks Dave, keep inspiring!😀

    The only Zoom product i have ever owned and i still have it, is a i think was a small unit the 505. Cost me about 80 quid. I quite like it, it's simple there are a couple of usable tones on their but as far as build quality it can't be faulted. 9v battery or 9v DC mains. Their made in Japan and their pretty cool with their tech so it's suprising to hear how flimbsy they (G6) seem. I thought dashboard out of a new Nissan Micra when i first saw it but it's not shy on the features.As i just mentioned i thought that 505 effects unit was expensive back in the day and according to the inflation calcul;ator today would have been more like 210 GBP now. So Dave i'm glad you got this gratis because their bloody expensive lol.

    I have a G6 which i use plugged into the effects loop of my Marshall DSL 40 cr and the effects sound great.
    I also plug the mono into my interface for recording, it really does have some great tones.
    I love the looper and have the SD card installed and you can record a 2 hour loop if you really wanted.
    I’m not sure if its supposed to record the drum rhythms or not but when i play back they are missing.
    I hated the menu system to start with but have got used to it now.
    Not sure about the strength of it but i’ve tripped onto it a few times now and its not damaged it yet. 😀

    • @MarsHalekGuitar
      @MarsHalekGuitar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's something that drives me crazy about my G5 - I think the drums should become part of the loop, at least as an option. I thought they fixed it with the G5n based on a demo I watched when that came out. Maybe not, or maybe they've regressed on that score?

  • @maturefox1
    @maturefox1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi Dave, thank you for the review of this pedal - I got a G5n and a helix and a GT8 of Boss and I am completely satisfied. Just to put that clear: To produce something made of plastic is more then a leap back - it's rediculously mad in times of not knowing how to get rid of that stuff, in case you don't need it anymore (for what reason ever)! This is a climate catastrophe. In cause of that I wouldn't even think of trying it out. So I am very happy about the fact that you did that for me now - again thank for that!
    Greetings from Germany from the silver fox, David 😉🦊

      The sea isn't floating with Zoom G6s choking turtles. It's mainly fishing line and plastic bags and crisp packets. It's unlikely these things will be thrown in the trash for many years, and even then it will be buried in the ground, just as if it had been made from aluminium. It's dense, solid plastic.

    Great video, GREAT playing. -I'm a zoom fan also - and an experienced player with average+ skills. Altho so many people play well that I'm not really sure what average skills are:) I still have and use a Zoom G1on and G1xon...and like them. So the G6 was a great, and much needed upgrade. For non professional players with a solid understanding of building sound the G6 works really nicely with my equipment. I carry the G6 with me 4 or 5 times a month and I've had it about a year now. I love what it does. The plastic casing is a little unnerving and the firmware update is what it is I suppose. But I think the functionality, the quality of the presets and effects themselves make it a winner. I took an all inclusive extended warranty to ease that plastic shell thing. I like the touch screen on it, like the extended looper, and can find the menu screens a pain at times. For me it works well and provides a ton of quality tone options at a not obscene price. And after watching a bunch of amateur-ish G6 reviews I was happy to find your's. It reinforced what I thought and it was great listening to you play thru it...Dave's Land, Ambient, and Blues tone were great. Screen shot of those would be cool.

I sure wish I could play, but then, there’s probably 100s of thousands who wish they could to, oh & yes I agree with your comments regarding the G6, I hate plastic, but I think I could forgive Zoom because of the amazing sounds coming out of that thing, & your playing is testament to that, I’m sure looking forward to listening to you more & be inspired at the same time, thanks so much David, keeping on going Sir.🎸😊

    I confess .. the first pedal i got when i went electric was a G3. All metal. For years that was all I had, and a Fender Jam! It still surprises me with lovely sounds and great for night time headphone practice. It's got a looper, uni vibe kinda, some nice delays, drums etc. Like my klon clone od though for od. This G6 looks big fun, though totally agree about the plastic. Daft! Cheers Dave. 🙏👍❤️

    I think for normal use it will easily be strong enough….sure you can break anything if you try hard enough…..or with little effort if you have a Helix LT(expression). Sounds very impressive, the looks are a bit bling for my taste and the display looks quirky in some instances…but, I think I’m gonna give one a try🤓. Thanks for another hour of enjoyment Dave….best wishes

    I bought a new G6 for £300 , arrived yesterday. Spent last night testing through FRFR and USB direct > Logic. First impressions using FRFR, presets IGNORE them, roll your own :). Also switch 'mic on' on any non IR can sims. I found that I had to dial back the Treble and Presence and everything sounded much better. I know Dave turned down the top on Master for direct to GUITAR AMP. For a few minutes I thought I had bought a turkey but once EQ'd it sounded very good. Where's the catch? You have to be canny about the effects you use so as not to get memory overload warnings. I will probably continue to use my pedal based board for gigs and G6 for use with Logic and as a back-up/rehearsal. I have to add, Zoom released a system software update, so its now easier to edit patches. In the real world, if I was a major touring act I would buy a Helix/Fractal etc.... the fact is I'm not... for £300 it's a keeper and great for instant jamming with Logic. A lot of fun to be had with the G6. Thanks for the introduction Dave.

    This is the greatest demo of this pedal on TH-cam. I own this pedal and many other multi effects units from other brands many of them been made of plastic a good example is a very old DOD 4tec with the expression pedal plastic too and that pedal more than 25 years old and it been Tru hell and back and still working like new. No some brand like line 6 mede the pedals with metal on the top and plastic on the bottom like tho Pod X3 live which I also own and is a great pedal but the switches on it are the worst because they are plastic inside and they break. So I rather have a all plastic pedal that I will be careful with then a half metal plastic bad plastic and way more expensive pedal. So for me the sound of the pedal is the most important thing and this pedal sounds amazing.

    I've been a Zoom fan since the early days of the 505 unit. Upgraded to the 505 II, then G9.2tt, G5n, and a GM-200 for good measure. I needed a wireless unit and was planning to purchase one when I discovered the Line 6 Pod Go Wireless. It took care of the effects upgrade and the wireless. If the G6 had wireless instead of Bluetooth I probably would have chosen it. I'm still a big fan of Zoom effects though. They seem to be like the perpetual underdog who always punches above his weigh class.

    I've got a Yamaha DG stomp from the '90s made of steel and it's built like a tank! But it's also much heavier than my Zoom G6 (and pretty much obsolete).
    The foot pedal on my G6 feels solid and so does the rest of the unit. It would be too heavy with a metal foot pedal. It's plastic but it's strong plastic. It fits perfectly in a briefcase which protects it fine during transport. And I think you get a lot for the price. I only wish there was more memory because the IRs take up a lot (so I usually don't use them).
    I use it plugged into a PA system, plugged into an amp or in the amp's EFX loop.

    Dave, First of all I love your psychedelic bluesy sound and great demo. For years I have been playing soul/blues/jazz gigs, DI with either SansAmp, FlyRig, TriAc, Trademark 60 etc.. although current set up is : Nobels ODR Mini (or Fulltone Fulldrive 2) > T-Rex Tremster > Nux Atlantic Rev/Echo (or TC Nova Delay) > Tech 21 Blonde into FOH PA. All have worked well for live and studio. I have to be portable and have gone through in 45 years: Mesa, Vox, Marshall, Fender, Lab Series, Polytone.... you name it. I've owned Pod gear and don't want to go there.... Software problems. How did the IRs feel on DI? I'm sure I could tweak a Fender Twin and would sound good with Fulldrive insert. I'm not expecting a Kemper but this looks like a good grab and go/back up? I did like some of the effects on the MS50G.... GREAT TOOL! Anyhow... keep on groovin!

    a steel board will be more rigid than plastic.
    That is important as most fx pedals have switches directly soldered to the pcb (printed circuit board). Any flexibility will eventually lead to faults.

    I feel bad for all the people who’ll buy G6 and surely will get frustrated by how hard the expression pedal is to activate. Your tip about removing the rubber piece is great but I found you can remove just half of it which is the perfect spot IMO because you can engage/disengage the pedal with just a slight press but without the rubber completely it would be too easy to accidentally do it.
    I’ve been playing G6 for a week now and I am very, VERY pleased. It sounds amazing on headphones, I actually don’t have any issue with the plastic build as it feels very sturdy overall. Hope it doesn’t break at some point. The update 2.0 fixes some of the UI annoyances as well thankfully

    I found Zoom and Boss ME 80 to be great for the price.Zoom is a bit fizzy and the Boss is nasal but for people who like lots of effects they are fine. Yet, a Vox Tonelab EX was awesome for pure sound.Vox need to reintroduce something like that.
    I bought a Helix two years ago and haven't wasted any money since.It is awesome.
    Just save money and get the one thing that you will love.It's 300 quid here, 200 there etc and it mounts up.Just save up and get quality.

    Cool intro jam Dave! I'm with you on the cheap plastic build. The g2.1u I got on your recommendation is made of metal and is a great pedal!! Sturdy, well made and will last. These company's using cheap junk on everything anymore is crap. They could stamp out the metal and make a great product, yet they go with a plastic molded form to save money for themselves. They never consider what would last and be durable because they are always looking ahead at selling you the next version. I'm sure they work fine but the end result will be one good drop or something falling on it will destroy it. They count on the consumer to upgrade to their newer products yet provide them with older ones that won't last over time.??? Plastic cases and pedals do not last.

    Great review. I rarely make it through an entire video like this.... but your method of 'showcasing' this pedal was pretty awesome, as well as your 'blues section' playing was pretty amazing (great feeling). Was wondering though - can this pedal be used for just effects through an amplifier's effects loop section and what would that sound like? Just curious, as I use the MS70 pedal by Zoom currently and love the effects sounds, but the cycling through patches is cumbersome.

    As I do not gig outside of my home and other people's homes, the plastic issue may not be an issue with me. At this price point and of this outstanding sonic quality, this would be a major consideration for me to get.

    That's some piece of kit for around £350 !
    Heck, I've paid more than that just for one boutique pedal.

    Interesting point on the plastic, however for some of us it may be an advantage. I have the G5n and yes it's built like a tank, but due to a really bad back I tend to have it saton the couch next to me, and I can find it a bit cumbersome. I have been thinking about a Boss Gt1 for ease of use but I couldn't live without that gorgeous particle reverb - that keeps me in another world for hours! LOL. Maybe the G6 is the answer for me.

    Plastic is plastic, it's CHEAPO-CHEAPO-CHEAPO!! Sad, I thought Zoom had smarter engineers than that! It's NOT gig worthy! It's a home only tone machine!

    It all depends on the quality of the plastic. Cheap plastic literaly crumbles in your hand after a time so I understand your worry. I can't think Zoom have used cheap plastic. Got a G3N myself and love it but now want this 6 lol

    I use the G1 Four, and it is brilliant for the money, small, light, solid as fuck, works from batteries or powerbanks, the sounds in it are amazing, and I use mine as a cab and delay stuff with my Revv G4 distortion, and it's pure heavy rock, with the cab sim on the zoom and the Revv together, it's like real amps through my busking amp, a totally portable marshall stack or mesa boogie.

    Plastic is a good thing because it's light ! I really don't understand your fear ! Put it in a flycase and don't jump on it when you play and il will be ok ! :)

    Modern plastics are great, but if you want the unit to still be robust ten years later, good luck. Will the plastic get brittle?

    One of the negatives for me, is the price. It seems that we're in a golden age, for affordable guitars and amps, but effects pedals are ridiculously expensive.

      If you think about it though it costs a lot less than buying a real amp, cab, and each effect

      This is why I am not looking to buy one. For my needs a G3n is more than enough. I considered getting a G5n for the extra foot switches but on reflection the processing power being the same as the G3n put me off. But if I was in the market for a first multi-effects pedal those G5n can be had for £120 and they're still supported. I love the new amp and effects they released last year for the G3n and G5n.

      I’ve got several of the N series boxes. I am really out off by the plastic case. I’m a session player and I beat the crap out of my gear moving from place to place.

    You right, this is stupid that it's made of plastic, especially for the price range. But i'm a bedroom guy so it's not a big deal for me 🤷

    Sounds great, but then I've been a bit of a Zoom fan since the early days (I still miss my 9002). It's annoying that multi-fx UIs are still poor - they're gradually getting better, but I still won't buy anything I can't plug into a computer and make my patches from a big screen with a mouse and kb. I actually like that the limit on how many effects is a function of processing power, but there really should be some indication of how much each effect takes so I have an idea where the limits and limiting factors are.

    Zoom is both great and annoying.
    The G1Four is still great beside the IR. I wish they still had a battery compartment and add self charge and wireless to guitar.
    It seem Zoom has great engineers and a terrible marketing/managing department that doesn't understand guitar players.

    Firmware can be updated by connecting it to the guitar lab software via usb without using sd card. Sd card gives you much more looper time and ir storage. Also I recommend the Bluetooth adapter if you have a iPhone for the app. Newest firmware made it where you can touch the patch name to go straight to edit all. Would be nice to to be able to hide some icons on the menu maybe they will add some type of folder support later. Great vid I love mine.

    Aren't there people using arion and line 6 echofarm plastic pedals for years? Who are you baboons jumping up and down on pedals cracking the cases? You step on the damn thing with your toe.."stomp box" is and expression not how you actually use the thing. The touch screen....
    that i don't trust but everyone is using them now. I use zoom becasue i think their mod and time based effects are the best bang for your buck. I have an amp i like and 2 od pedals i love so the modeling doesn't matter to me.

    Dave, fantastic review as ever, this looks great, can you just use it as effects, and not have an amp/cab in the chain? At the moment, this looks better value then a Helix Stomp/XL?

    I need a multi fx modeler but having a hard time finding one that isnt overly hard to use for a live band. This looks like the best one so far from what i have seen. I had a Helix LT but found it too difficult.

    As far as what it is made of, a glock is partially made of polymer/ plastic and its tough as nails. I think it's more of the design than the material.
