England only started playing football forty years ago!
They never knew how to play. 66 world cup was fixed and parked the bus after 2 minutes against Italy 🇮🇹 3 years ago and were in the easy half of the draw 3 years ago and this year.
Shearer's against Holland in 96 has to be in there for me. Classy team goal with a classy assist by Teddy.
@martinwheeler208 shearer sliced it though, he admits it himself! luckily he didn't slice it enough ! But I agree Teddy's assist was just class - looked technically perfect (well it was!)
Like someone else said Charlton against Mexico. It was still rising when it hit the net!
Oh and why didn't the goalie move for Beckham's free kick?
If you look carefully, he moved slightly the other way first, then the pace of the ball ruined him
Bobby Charlton versus Mexico in the World Cup 1966 is very very special. Interesting that modern commentators only go back about 30 years at best. Of those shown the John Barnes goal against Brazil is by far and away the best.

Platt's v Belgium - pure magic but Owen v Argentina was the one we all loved the best.
Bobby Charlton against Mexico trumps all of these goals.

Colin Hendry was a beast of a defender too. Phenomenal goal by a phenomenal player
It's worth remembering that immediately before that goal, Scotland has a penalty saved. Seaman parried the ball away and gathered safely from the resulting corner kick. He then threw ball to G Neville, and I think he passed it on to Gazza. The rest is history...

I am 56 and I have never witnessed an Englishman lifting a major trophy. I cant help thinking that videos of englands greatest goals is going to be the best achievements for the rest my life. Considering the great players we have had since england won in 66, is a sad fact, that England have always failed and always lacked that something special to be a great winning side, like those boys of 66.

Nat Lofthouse's goal v Austria in 1953, even though he knew he'd get injured in the process (He ended up breaking his leg in a clash with the goalkeeper), he still went for it.

England top goals surely have to be more than just a single shot from distance, as in a free kick. The build up is central and for that, Bobby Charlton v Mexico must be number one.

Beckham's free kick was decent but if it is mainly in there for its significance, then surely Geoff Hurst's third in 1966 has to top it.
It wasn't a free kick and people forget the Finnish goalkeeper helped England too because Germany drew 0-0 with Finland and Finland goalkeeper was anti Niemi and he was my favourite goalkeeper
David Platt’s goal, yes it was something special.
It’s hard to come with a top 5 list of course, and there is no Bobby Charlton goal on here, so many to pick from. Perhaps you are too young to have seen them.
Cole - yes. A sumptuous strike from a player we never saw the best of in an England shirt.
Beckham - no. He’d been lining those free kicks up all the second half without success - and why didn’t the goalie try to save it?
Owen - yes. Truly sensational goal at a World Cup and wasn’t he still only eighteen?
Barnes - no. Looks great but was in a friendly. Were Brazil bothered?
Gazza - yes. Without a doubt, a genuinely great goal. Technique, pace, guts, flamboyance, cool finish. A violent, beautiful goal.
David Platt's goal definitevely belongs someplace up there, probably at #1. I remember a commentary at the time that said the goal was so perfectly executed that Belgium's defense hadn't even made anything wrong.

I actually believe that you cannot rank great goals, so I am not saying that the Beckham goal against Greece us no. 1, but when you consider the pressure he was under, and the fact that he had please of time to think about it, it was unbelievable.

@@richardgriffiths6989 highly unlikely there were better goals before then … football only properly professionalised from the 50s onwards and in particular when they abolished the maximum wage rule … footballers in earlier eras simply weren’t in the same league

This list is a complete joke. Second best ever was Bobby Charlton v Mexico ..we needed a win after the opening game v Uruguay...and the goal was brilliant..and No 1 without any shadow of a doubt was Geoff Hurst's third goal v W Germany FFS it won us the World Cup .end of debate.
English footballers are a joke for taking off their silver medals against Italy and Spain. You have Olympians who are proud to win gold and silver and bronze but footballers cry and refuse to wear their medals ! Lol 😆 🤣 😂
