      Game developers were learning how to make gameplay fun and efficient during the 90s. Trying various things to see what works and what doesn't. Sure this game was super challenging and hard but I still really enjoyed it. It was fun for my little sister and I to find out how far we could get and what the next level would look like. I loved it on SNES. Unfortunately I didn't know it existed on PC, there's no way a kid was aware to compare it back then unless they had a friend who had it on multiple systems which was rare I think

    30:00 these levels look amazing... I mean even look at the purplish shadow on the mountains..
    Most games would just do a black or dark dark blue shadow, but these mother truckers actually thought about how shadows get their color from the surface AND the blue scattering of light in the sky. In such a simple game, with just 2d paint tools to make the art, the artist actually thought about that. Insane..

    I had similar issues with ATI 3D Rage drivers with Mechwarrior 2's ATI 3D accelerated version. The newest dated drivers seem to work with DirectX and OpenGL but completely lack the low level proprietary API that the game relied on. I had to use the drivers from the CD the card shipped with.
    Maybe something similar is happening here and it's defaulting to an inefficient code path if the ATI low level API is missing.

  • @zipzeolocke2
    @zipzeolocke2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I completely understand I'm in the minority when I say I owned the first Bubsy game on the SNES and my little sister and I absolutely loved it! What could possibly go wrong? It was silly and fun. Sure it was really easy to die, I think it would've really benefited from a 3 hearts life system instead of 1 hit KO's. But still the challenge of the game was fun because my little sister and I were always curious what the next level was going to look like and if we could make it there. We never did beat the game because it was really hard. But that did not stop us from trying! I don't think people should be so hard on the game for being challenging. it was the 90s and game developers were still learning how to make gameplay fun and efficient. it was a very experimental time for video games. We've come so far and video games have improved dramatically!

    I found it funny that before they made Busby they made someone right a short essay on what makes Mario/Sonic fun and on that essay they point out that they like how the games have no fall damage.... so naturally they add fall damage to their game =b

    • @mix3k818
      @mix3k818 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, truth be told, falling damage can work. It's just the camera that was too zoomed in and it didn't allow for much prediction of where Bubsy can land or not.
      But in the instances where you know Bubsy can land (i.e. not a Cliff), you not gliding is pretty much your fault, considering how easy that is.

    Why am I here? (Other than that I really like DF Retro plays) Why are you here? Why are we doing this to ourselves? What is the meaning of life and living? Are we living in a multiverse? How can the universe both seem to be expanding at a faster rate all the time, be conceptually endless and one, still theoretically able, to travel faster than the speed of light, therefor past its expanse? Or are the definitions of "endlessness" and borders a human figment, an indication of our inept capability to comprehend things beyond our comprehension?
    And why is Bubsy so smug? These are the questions we keep asking ourselves.
    I played through the first Bubsy on the SNES with a friend several times. Why did we do that? It will remain a mystery. Even to me. Forever unsolved.
    As a sidenote: playing this game made me physically nauseous. Like in: needing to throw up. A combination of its garish visuals, soulcrushing, strenuous plug and play sound effects, "jaunty" music, the floaty, unprecise controls and "less good" camera which kept sagging behind making me seasick. Not to mention the "innovative and brilliant" idea of having the camera turn upside down constantly while Bubsy river rafts on his ass, as he's also at the same time spinning around in circles. It had the same effect on me as riding a rollercoaster whilst being stomach sick. The puns though... they're so bad they become good. Or maybe it's the definition of Stockholm syndrome. I don't know anymore... Help! I need help!
    Good stuff! Good times!

      Besides, he always had that Max Casella vibe to me, as in the new game, he sounds like a mellower version of Daxter.
      Seriously.

    The DF crew loves some of the worst retro games. Most people who played these games have nostalgia for them all up until they try to play them again, and here we are watching a masterful playthrough of Busby.
